Death Notice. Blair Pilot, June 1900. The funeral of Mrs. Bertha [sic - Emma] JENSEN, daughter of B.P. MILLER of Kennard took place at Orum last Tuesday. Many friends sympathize with the sorrowing family whose circle is broken by this death, as well as the heart-broken husband who is left with the care of a young babe.
Obituary. Blair Courier. 21 June 1900. We are pained to record the death of Mrs. J.P. JENSEN which occured [sic] at her home about three miles southeast of Orum last Saturday evening. She gave birth to a child about a week before her death that is still living and will be reared by Mrs. JENSEN's parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.P. MILLER. A three-year-old boy will be taken by Soren JENSEN. Rev. A. LARSEN conducted the funeral services from the house on Monday, burial taking place at the Danish burying ground near Orum. The funeral was said to be the largest ever held in that part of the country, showing the high esteem in which Mrs. JENSEN was held. The sympathies of all are extended to the bereaved husband and parents.
Obituary. Blair Tribune, 16 Jul 1913. (Ora Odessa JENSEN's father) Dian CARTER Dead. Oliver Sir Dian CARTER was born in Kentucky March 1, 1854, and died July 13, 1913, aged 59 years, 4 months and 13 days. His early life was spent in Kentucky and Ohio and at the age of 12 years, his parents, Alexander CARTER, Sr., and Martha McCLOUD CARTER, followed his half-brothers, Jacob, Alex and T.M. CARTER to the new home on the prairie of Washington county, and all of his life since then has been spent there. He was married at De Soto, Neb., to Mary A. LEACH thirty-four years ago in May, and to this union eight children were born all of whom are living and are as follows: Mrs. R.T. KING of Vallentine, Nebr., Mrs. J.P. JENSEN, Blair, Claude and Dine, jr., Blair, Mrs. Bert MORRIS, Herman, and John 2nd, Catherine and Zoe CARTER at home. He also leaves to mourn his death one brother in the Soldiers' Home at Leavensworth, Kas., two half brothers, T.M. CARTER and John COMPTON, sr., and two sisters, Mesdames J.P. STRICKLETT and Thos. SCOTT; ten grand children and numerous other relatives. For many years he has been a faithful member of the Re-organized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the services at the home were in charge of Elder H.S. LYTLE of Blair, assisted by an Omaha minister. For the last six months, Mr. CARTER has been sick and suffered greatly but his wife, children and relatives attended him constantly and everything possible was done for him that could be thought of, and his death relieved his terrible sufferings and in spite of grief, the remaining relatives know he is at rest at last.
Obituary. Blair Democrat, 17 Jul 1913. (Ora Odessa JENSEN's father) Death of Dian CARTER. After a lingering illness of many months Dian CARTER passed away at his home north of Blair last Sunday. His illness was of such kind that he suffered constantly during the last six months of his life. Oliver Sir Dian CARTER was born in Kentucky in 1854 and most of his early life was spent there. At twelve years of age he came to Washington county. He was married to Miss Mary LEACH, of DeSoto, thirty-four years ago and to this union eight children were born. They are Mrs. R.T. KING, Valentine, Neb., Mrs. P. JENSEN, Blair, Mrs. Bert NORRIS, Herman, Claude Dian jr., John, Joe and Catherine all of Blair. For many years Mr. CARTER has been a member of The Reorganized of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints and the funeral services were under the direction of Elder H.S. LYTLE and an Omaha minister. Interment took place Tuesday in the Blair cemetery.
Obituary. Blair Pilot-Tribune, 16 May 1929. (Emma MILLER's mother) Mrs. B.P. MILLER Answers Call. Had Been Confined to Bed for Past Eight Months. Mrs. B.P. MILLER, wife of one of Washington county's prominent farmers living west of Blair, answered the last summons at the family home Monday after a year's illness, eight months of which she had been bedridden and given the gentle care of her daughter, Alma, in whose arms she passed away. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the St. Paul's Lutheran church at Orum and interment made in the family lot of the church cemetery. Rev. W.H. UNDERWOOD of this city delivered the funeral discourse. Lena OBERBRINKMAN was born in Westphalia, Germany, on August 25, 1855, and had reached the age of 73 years, 9 months and 18 days. She came to Washington county in April, 1869, when 1 years of age with her sister, Mrs. Z. DUNKLAU, and on August 25, 1875, was married to B.P. MILLER, residing continuously on the farm where she passed away since 1876. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. MILLER, three boys and five girls, of which six survive: Henry, Albert H., Alice, Lora, Alma and Evelyn. Emma, the oldest daughter, passed away in 1900 at the age of 24, and Berthel in 1890 at the age of 2 years. There are also ten grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. MILLER celebrated their golden wedding August 25, 1925, and were considered at that time to have had a longer continuous residence on one farm than any other couple in Washington county. Albert H., former state senator, and Alma are unmarried and reside at home, companions of their parents. During Mrs. MILLER's prolonged illness her care devolved largely on these children and every attention that loving hands and hearts could perform was lavished on "mother" at all times. Mrs. MILLER was a "mother" in all that the term implies, and will be greatly missed not only by her husband and children, but by neighbors and friends who had associated with her during her long residence on the old home place.
Obituary. Blair Pilot-Tribune, 24 Nov 1932. (Emma MILLER's father) Aged Pioneer Dies Monday. Early County Resident Dies at Age of Eighty After Brief Illness. Came to Lincoln Township in 1870. Served as Precinct Assessor Many Years; Also as a Member of the County Board of Supervisors. The community was saddened Monday to learn of the death of B.P. MILLER, prominent Washington county pioneer, who died at his home near Orum at the age of eighty after a short illness. Mr. MILLER was born in Schleswig, Denmark, [sic - see correct location in Enterprise obituary following] February 23, 1852, and came to Omaha in 1870 at the age of eighteen years. After a short residence in Omaha, he came to Lincoln township and started work on a farm in the Orum neighborhood. He soon saved enough money to start farming operations for himself and gradually increased his land holdings until at the time of his death, his home place consisted of 250 acres, which was farmed under the direction of his son, Albert H. MILLER. On August 25, 1875, Mr. MILLER married Lena OBERBRINKMANN at Orum, and to this union eight children were born, Henry, of Kennard, Albert H., of Orum, Mrs. Alice LARSEN of Omaha, Mrs. Evelyn LUNDT, of Omaha, Mrs. Lars LARSEN, of Orum, and Miss Alma, who lived at home with her father. A daughter, Emma, died in 1900 and a son, Berthal, died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. MILLER celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on August 25, 1925. Mrs. MILLER passed away in May 1929. Mr. MILLER was one of two survivors of the original Danish colonists in the Orum vicinity, the other being Mrs. Elsie JORGENSEN, 93 years of age, who now makes her home in Blair. At the time of his death, Mr. MILLER had lived continuously in the same precinct for 62 years and on the same farm for more than 54 years. He was a great love of home life and had never been away from home overnight until a recent trip to Excelsior Springs when his health began to fail. Mr. MILLER joined the Odd Fellows Lodge in Blair more than fifty years ago and on July 7, 1932, he was presented with a jeweled pin in recognition of his fifty year of membership in that organization. The pin was presented by Judge I.C. ELLER, himself a veteran Odd Fellow, at a ceremony held in Blair, and was one of Mr. MILLER's most prized possessions. One of those sturdy pioneers who had come to Washington county at the time that Lincoln precinct was virgin prairie, Mr. MILLER had participated in and been an important factor in the development of that vicinity into one of the most productive regions in the world. He had outlived depressions and crises; throughout he maintained his firm belief in the value of Washington county real estate. Mr. MILLER upon coming to this county worked first for E.S. GAYLORD and bought his first farm consisting of 80 acres for $400. Untoward events were numerous when he first went farming yet in a virtual dugout Mr. MILLER matched himself against the unbroken soil. Of such circumstances he often spoke, one of his most impressive recollections being the grasshopper plague. "Talk about the grasshoppers," he often said. "I can remember when you couldn't see the sun because of them. They took everything in front of them." Public spirited always, he served nearly 25 years as precinct assessor and also for a time on the board of county supervisors, when such a system was in effect here. An ardent republican, he followed the political situation closely and until a few days before his death he had watched with interest the affairs of his chosen party. Mr. MILLER was one who cast an absent voters ballot at the recent election, declaring at the time that it was his wish to "vote for another republican before he died." Besides his children, Mr. MILLER is survived by one sister, Mrs. Peter LARSEN of Omaha and by great grandchildren. Funeral services, in charge of the I.O.O.F., were held at the MILLER home near Orum Wednesday afternoon, with Rev. Walter H. JACKSON officiating. His body was laid to rest beside that of his wife and two deceased children in the cemetery at Orum.
Obituary. Blair Enterprise, 24 Nov 1932. (Emma MILLER's father) B.P. MILLER Is Called To Rest. Berthel P. MILLER, highly respected citizen of Washington county, passed away at his farm home west of Blair on Monday, Nov. 21, 1932 at the ripe old age of 80 years, months and 28 days Deceased was born in Schleswig, Holstein, Germany and came to this country and to Washington county when a lad of ten years. For sixty-two years he has made Lincoln township his home and for the past fifty-four years has resided on the farm where he died. He was married to Lena OBERBRINKMAN, Aug. 25, 1875 and to this union eight children were born, three boys and five girls, six of whom still live and mourn deeply their loss. They are Henry of Kennard, Albert H., Mrs. Lora LARSEN and Alma of Blair and Mrs. Evelyn LUNDT and Mrs. Alice LARSEN of Omaha. When a young man of twenty-one years Mr. MILLER became a citizen of the United States and took great pride in the fact that he had never missed an opportunity to vote. He was a real citizen, always interested in the civic affairs of his country and community and at different times served as precinct assessor and as county supervisor. He was confirmed and baptized in the Lutheran church in his native country and kept his confiding faith in God through the years. He joined the Odd Fellows Lodge in Blair more than fifty years ago and just recently was presented with a fifty year veterans jewel of which he was very proud. His wife passed on three years ago but with the help of his son, A.H., and his daughter, Alma, he was made happy and content by seeing the old home kept together the work go on. The writer has known the deceased intimately for years and his pleasant visits to this office when matters of community interests were discussed will remain a bright spot in our memory. We will always retain the thoughts of his fairness and broad mindedness on subjects of public nature and in his passing we realize that Washington county has lost a substantial citizen. The funeral services were held from the home on Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock with Rev. Walter H. JACKSON officiating and interment was made in the Orum cemetery under the direction of the Blair Odd Fellows Lodge.
Obituary (incomplete). Blair Enterprise, 15 Jul 1937. (Ora Odessa JENSEN's mother). Pioneer Answers Last Roll Call At The Age Of 75. Born at De Soto in 1862. Spent Entire Life in This County. Mary A. CARTER, mother of Mrs. J.P. JENSEN, passed away Saturday, July 10, at five o'clock a.m. at the age of 75 years. Deceased was a pioneer of Washington county having been born at De Soto in 1862 to Mr. and Mrs. Don J. LEACH. Her parents were among the members of the Latter Day Saints church who left Nauvoo, Illinois, at the time of the death of the leader of the church, and they came to De Soto to the winter quarters of the church and decided with a band of the Saints to stop at De Soto where the branch of the Reorganized church was formed in that new town. Here, in the present old brick house known as the WILDA farm, Mrs. CARTER, then Mary LEACH was born. She was married May 10th, 1877, at Blair, Nebraska to Oliver Sir Dion CARTER, youngest son of Alexander CARTER, sr., and Martha Jane MacLOUD CARTER, by Rev. SIN CLAIR, a pioneer minister of DeSoto, Nebraska. To that union eight children were born all living as follows: Mrs. Lee PRATT, Valentine, Nebraska; Claude E. CARTER, [section missin] ....passing with many other relatives and a host of friends. Her own immediate family, brothers and sisters of the Don LEACH family have all passed on. Funeral services were held last Monday at 2 p.m. at the Baptist church in Blair with Elder Carl T. SELF, of the Latter Day Saints church officiating and Rev. T.J. REESE of the local Baptist church assisting under the auspices of the Woodman Circle and interment was made in the Blair cemetery. Thus one by one the pioneers are leaving us. The privations and hardships of those earlier days are things of the past and like they themselves belong to a time soon to be but a memory.
Obituary.
Blair Pilot-Tribune, 20 Jan 1938. Postmaster J.P. JENSEN,
64, Dies Suddenly. Heart Attack on Street Is Fatal to J.P. JENSEN.
Long Prominent in Local Affairs, His Death Comes as Shock. Was
Postmaster for Almost Four Years. Huge Throng Present Monday at
Funeral Services; Former Leading Auctioneer, Mr. JENSEN was
Well-Known Over the County. Postmaster J.P. JENSEN, 64, long
active in Blair democratic and civic societies, and well-known throughout
Washington and surrounding counties for his former activities as a farmer
and auctioneer, died at Immanuel hospital in Omaha early Friday morning,
only a few hours after suffering a heart attack while walking to the
business section from his home. In good health all his life, Mr.
JENSEN became ill and died so suddenly that his many friends in Blair
and vicinity had difficulty in realizing that he had succumbed. He had
worked at his office all day Thursday, and
only Wednesday night had presided
at the annual meeting of the Jensen Realty company. His wife and
children were at his bedside when death came, as were all of his 12 brothers
and sisters but four, Henry, James and Andrew JENSEN, and Mrs. Adolph
VOSS, who were on the west coast at the time. For nearly four
years postmaster, succeeding the late John F. WHITE, Mr. JENSEN
already had a long and varied record of service to his credit when he
assumed that position. For four years he served as county assessor;
during the World war he was chief clerk of the draft board here; for years
he had cooperated in the work of the Nebraska state fair. He resigned
his position as a fourth ward city councilman when he became postmaster.
During the 37 years he resided in Blair he had served on many civic
committees and assisted in innumerable community enterprises. Largely
through his more than 30 years as an auctioneer, crying farm sales, he
became acquainted with practically everyone in the county. He first
worked with the late H.H. REED, pioneer Blair auctioneer.
Later, he and G.F. BROSS joined to form the well-known firm of Jensen
& Bross, which partnership continued until Mr. JENSEN was appointed
postmaster. Native of County. He was the first death among the
13 children of the late Mr. and Mrs. Soren JENSEN, prominent
Washington county pioneers. Native of this county he was born March
21, 1873, on the original JENSEN homestead farm in Lincoln township.
He attended the old March school. At the age of 21, in 1894, he was
married to Emma MILLER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Berthel P. MILLER,
pioneers of the same neighborhood. The young wife died, leaving an
infant son, Howard. On May 10, 1902, Mr. JENSEN was united in
marriage to Ora Odessa CARTER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Sir
Dion CARTER of DeSoto township. The young couple and little
son, Howard, moved to what was then known at the STEWART farm, north
of Blair, where they resided eight years. Then they moved to an
acreage adjoining Dana college at the edge of Blair and lived there six
years before moving to their present home, 501 west Park street. Six
children were born to Mr. and Mrs. JENSEN, one of whom, James Peter,
jr., died in 1905 at the age of one year. The other children are Soren,
now of Broken Bow, Nebraska; John Phillip, Kearney; Mrs. Eldred LARSON
(Edythe), Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Dorothy and Alfred of Blair.
These, with Mrs. JENSEN and the eldest son, Howard, of Arlington, and
seven grandchildren, survive. The grandchildren are Emma, Dorothy,
Lora Ann, Howard jr., Jacky Paul and Edythe Mary, children of Mr. and Mrs.
Howard JENSEN; Soren Jensen III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Soren JENSEN;
and Charles Robert LARSON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eldred LARSON.
Also surviving are six brothers, James H. JENSEN of Long Beach,
California; Nels, Omaha; Andrew, Hillsboro, Oregon; Ed, Henry and Albert A.
JENSEN, all of the Blair vicinity; and six sisters, Mrs. Jens B.
JENSEN (Anna) and Mrs. Peter SVENDGAARD (Emma) of Blair; Mrs.
Adolph VOSS (Mary) of Long Beach; Mrs. Ed GILBERTSON (Esther),
Mrs. George KUHR (Rena) and Mrs. Henry VOSS (Myrtle), all of
Blair. There are many more distant relatives, the family being one of
the largest in Nebraska. Funeral services, attended by a huge throng
of relatives and friends estimated at from 500 to 600 persons, were held at
2 p.m. Monday at First Methodist church. In charge of the rites was
Elder Frank MacDONALD of the Omaha and Council Bluffs churches of the
Latter Day Saints, assisted by Elder Carl T. SELF of Omaha.
Elder MacDONALD in the sermon, eulogized Mr. JENSEN's life of
public service. Eight nephews of Mr. JENSEN were active
pallbearers; Merton JENSEN, Nels SVENDGAARD, Harold JENSEN,
Merton KUHR, Earl JENSEN, Leslie JENSEN, Elmer
JENSEN and Lyle GILBERTSON. Honorary pallbearers were
Supreme Court Judge L.B. DAY of Omaha, G.F. BROSS, Peter M.
TYSON, Alfred O. SICK, Bruce McMILLAN, Clark O'HANLON,
A.H. MILLER, Karl CHRISTENSEN, Harry L. MORRIS and Lou
LATTA, all of Blair. Interment was in Blair cemetery with
graveside services in charge of the local I.O.O.F. lodge. Mr.
JENSEN had served as Noble Grand of the lodge, and recently received the
25-year membership jewel of the order.
Obituary. Blair Enterprise,
20 Jan 1938. Rites for Blair Postmaster Held Here Monday. Was
Blair Postmaster At Time of Death. Well Known In The Co. J.P.
JENSEN, well known Washington county citizen and member of one of the
largest families in this county, died early Friday morning at the Immanuel
hospital in Omaha, a victim of a paralytic stroke, which he had suffered
late Thursday evening. Mr. JENSEN, who was postmaster of Blair,
at the time of his death, knew, perhaps, more individuals in this vicinity
than any other person in Washington county. For a number of years he
was a partner in the well known Jensen and Bross auctioneering team and his
other activities in the Blair City Council, the Nebraska State Fair and Odd
Fellows lodge had brought him in contact with
many people. His sudden
death was a severe shock to the entire community and funeral services, held
at the Methodist Episcopal church Monday afternoon, taxed the capacity of
the church severely. James Peter JENSEN was born March 21,
1873, and died January 14th, 1938, at the age of 64 years, 9 months and 23
days. He was born on the original homestead farm, in Lincoln township,
of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Soren JENSEN, Danish pioneers of
Washington county. He attended the old March school. He was
married at the age of 21 to Emma MILLER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Berthel P. MILLER, also Washington county pioneers of the same
neighborhood. The young wife died, leaving an infant son, Howard.
On May 10, 1902, Mr. JENSEN was united in marriage with Ora Odessa
CARTER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Sir Dion CARTER, of De
Soto township. The young couple and the little son, Howard, moved to
what was then known as the STEWART farm, north of Blair, where they
lived eight years. The family then moved to an acreage with a home
adjoining Dana college, and lived there six years, after which they moved to
the family's present home in Dexterville, where they have since lived.
Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. JENSEN: James Peter
JENSEN jr., born June 6, 1904, who died at the age of 1 year; Soren, of
Broken Bow, Nebraska; John Phillip, of Kearney; Edyth, Mrs. Eldred LARSON,
of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Dorothy and Alfred of Blair. These, with
the widow and eldest son, Howard, and seven grandchildren are left to mourn
him. the grandchildren are Emma, Dorothy, Lora Ann, Howard, Junior,
Jacky Paul, Edyth Mary; children of Mr. and Mrs. Howard JENSEN; Soren
JENSEN III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Soren JENSEN; and Charles Robert
LARSON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eldred LARSON. He is also
survived by six sisters and six brothers: Anna, Mrs. Jens B. JENSEN;
Emma, Mrs. Peter SVENDGAARD; James H., of Long Beach, California;
Nels, of Omaha; Mary, Mrs. Adolph VOSS, of Long Beach, California;
Andrew, of Hillsbora, Oregon; Ed.; Henry; Esther, Mrs. Ed GILBERTSON;
Albert A.; Rena, Mrs. George KUHR; and Myrtle, Mrs. Henry VOSS.
Nearly all of his sisters and brothers were at his deathbed. The
families of these relatives, among them the 8 nephews who were his
pallbearers, and many cousins, are a large host of relatives who sorrow at
his death. Mr. JENSEN was stricken suddenly on Thursday
evening, and died Friday morning at 3 o'clock at the Immanuel hospital in
Omaha, where every care was taken for him during his last hous [sic].
He led a full and successful life. Among his many interests and
activities were the Odd Fellows lodge, in which he had served as Noble
Grand, and recently received the 25 year jewel of the order, whose members
performed the grave service, with the Elders of the Reorganized Latter Day
Saints church; 4 years as county assessor; he served his country during the
World war as chief clerk of the draft board; his many years of
auctioneering; work with the Nebraska State Fair; years as an officer of the
Jensen Realty Company; service to the city on the council and many civic
committees; and in the past four years his service as the postmaster at
Blair. He was a kind and loving and indulgent father, a Christian,
upright and God-fearing, and his family is greatly bereaved at their loss.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the M.E. church in Blair
with Eldor [sic] Frank McDONALD, of the Burt Street Latter Day
Saints church in Omaha, officiating. He was assisted by Eldor [sic]
Carl T. SELF, also of Omaha. Interment, made in the Blair
cemetery, was under the direction of the Odd Fellows lodge, of Blair with
Past Grand Masters Reed O'HANLON and Clark O'HANLON, in charge
of activities.

Obituary. Posted 8 Aug 2005 by Mortuary. Helen K JENSEN. Helen Caroline KENDALL JENSEN died July 29, 2005 at Ashland [OR] Community Hospital. She was 92, and had lived in Ashland since 1985. Helen, daughter of Herbert Wilson KENDALL and Ruth DRYDEN KENDALL, was born in Fremont, Nebraska on [date missing]. She lived in Springfield, Missouri, Boston, Massachusetts, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Grand Island, Nebraska before the family finally settled in Kearney, Nebraska when she was nine years old. By this time she had two brothers, John and Bruce. At age sixteen, having graduated from high school, she worked as a reporter on the local daily newspaper for a year before going to Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she graduated in 1934 with a B.A. in English. After college, Helen worked for the Farm Security Administration, took graduate work in sociology at the University of Kentucky, and was a disaster case worker for the American Red Cross at the time of the 1937 Ohio River flood. In 1938, she married John P. JENSEN, her uncle's law partner in Kearney, Nebraska. They had three daughters and a son, all who survive: Jo Ann ENTWISTLE of Lockport, Illinois; Kay MASER of Ashland, Oregon; Ruth JENSEN of Lincoln, Nebraska; and John JENSEN Jr. of Tacoma, Washington. (In addition, Helen is survived by her brother, John KENDALL, of Ann Arbor, Michigan and one grandchild, Lee Anne MASER of Thessaloniki, Greece. The JENSEN family lived in Kearney, Nebraska and also in Evergreen, Colorado, where they had a summer home. Helen's husband, John, died in 1965. Helen had taught school for two years and was completing her Masters Degree in English from the University of Nebraska/Kearney, the year her husband passed away. She then moved to Vincennes, Indiana and taught English, sociology and speech at Vincennes University for four years. Her summers were spent traveling overseas, including one trip by Volkswagen across Scandinavia, Finland, Russia, the Balkans and Eastern Germany. After four years in Vincennes, she stored her furniture and went to Mexico for the summer, taking classes at the Instituto in San Miguel Allende. After her summer classes in Mexico, she drove to California and sailed for Hong Kong. From there she traveled to Australia and through the Orient and took a bus from Tehran to London, arriving there just before Christmas. Returning to California in late January, she enrolled at the University of California for doctoral work, secured a job in the Counseling Center at California State University/Long Beach and bought a house in Long Beach, where she lived until she moved to Ashland, Oregon in the fall of 1985. Her travel while she lived in Long Beach included research in Samoa and New Guinea, extensive travel in Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand, a friendship tour to China in 1978, an Audubon study in the Galapagos Islands, and Elderhostel in Great Britain and a journey to Jordan, Israel and Greece. She was active in the Methodist Church in Long Beach and in the League of Women Voters, and served as president of her P.E.O. chapter and head of the Long Beach P.E.O. Reciprocity, which was made up of thirty-one chapters. She was a docent at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, where she also edited the docent newsletter for a year. After moving to Ashland, Oregon in 1985, Helen was a volunteer with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, a docent at the Schneider Museum of Art at Southern Oregon University, a member of the Ashland Study Club, Chapter EE of P.E.O., and AAUW. She volunteered for many organizations including Meals on Wheels, Dunn House and ICCA. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ashland, where she was lay leader for two years, as well as President of United Methodist Women. All who knew Helen appreciated her great sense of humor and wit, optimistic outlook on life, wonderful intelligence and her loving spirit which she shared so freely with her family and friends from all over the world, as well as in her community. A Memorial Service, reception following, will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Ashland, 175 North Main Street, at 100:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 20. Her ashes will be interred in the Methodist churchyard. Instead of flowers, Helen requested that she be remembered by donations to the First United Methodist Church of Ashland or donations to the American Friends Service Committee, 1501 Cherry St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19102.
Obituary. Kearney Hub, 2 Mar 2013. Tacoma, Wash. - John Philip JENSEN Jr., 65, of Tacoma died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, in Tacoma. Memorial services were Feb. 2 in Tacoma. Burial will be in Blair, Neb. He was born Aug. 7, 1948, in Kearney, Neb., to John P. and Helen (KENDALL) JENSEN. Survivors include his sisters, Jo Ann ENTWISLE of Lockport, Ill., Kay MASER of Ashland, Ore., and Ruth JENSEN of Lincoln, Neb. John was the youngest child of John P. JENSEN, a Kearney attorney, and Helen KENDALL JENSEN, both longtime residents of Kearney. His maternal grandparents, also of Kearney, were Herbert W. KENDALL and Ruth DRYDEN KENDALL. Dryden Park was given to the city of Kearney by John N. DRYDEN, John's great-grandfather, who practiced law in Kearney from 1885 until 1932. John graduated from Kearney High School in 1966 and attended Kearney State College from 1966 to 1970 and the University of Washington in Seattle. He earned his law degree from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma in 1985. In Tacoma, he spent nearly three decades litigating civil and criminal cases. As a zealous advocate, he would take on any challenge to protect the injured, the poor and the innocent. Standing 6 feet 6 inches tall with a loud bass voice and intense arguments, it was impossible for anyone in the courtroom to ignore his presence. One of his major legal accomplishments was championing the "Knock and Talk" rule that requires that police knock and announce themselves properly before entering a residence without a warrant, in the Washington State Supreme Court case of State v. Ferrier. He was passionate about everything he did and lived his life with gusto. He spent much time renovating his turn-of-the-century Victorian home in Tacoma. The home was reminiscent of his childhood home in Kearney at 522 W. 22nd St. He sailed the Atlantic Coastline down to the Caribbean and the Virgin Islands and traveled to Costa Rica, Ireland and across that country, making his unforgettable mark along the way. He loved to cook delicious meals for friends and cheer for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Washington Huskies, the Seahawks and Mariners. To the end, he was an old-fashioned gentleman who refused to use computers, insisted on opening doors for women and savored a good shot of fine whiskey. Burial will be at the JENSEN family ancestral site in Blair.

At one of the most attractive home weddings of the season in Blair, Miss Edythe JENSEN became the bride of Eldred LARSON, of Sioux Falls, S.D., at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. JENSEN, this (Thursday) morning at half past nine, the Rev. Arthur F. NEWELL officiating. The attendants were Miss Dorothy JENSEN, sister of the bride and Boyce BETZER of Omaha, a fraternity brother of the groom. Preceding the ceremony Miss Margaret SMITH of Kearney sang "Oh, Perfect Love", accompanied by Miss Arlene LARSON, sister of the groom. Blair Newspaper (1963): ORIGINAL ‘MISS BLAIR’ TO RIDE IN BRIDGE PARADE MAY 11. One of the many unusual things about the Free Bridge days and parade here Saturday, 11 May, will be the appearance of the original “Miss Blair” in the parade. The Miss Blair who served at the original christening of the bridge back on 26 Jul 1929 was the former Miss Edythe JENSEN, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.P. JENSEN. She rode in the ceremonial parade 24 years ago and figured prominently in the ribbon cutting ceremonies at Bridge center on that day. She was one of the attendants of Miss Nebraska, who was here for the ceremony too. Miss Nebraska of 1929 was Miss Dorothy Jane WEAVER, daughter of Gov. A.J. WEAVER of Nebraska. Miss JENSEN is now married to E.C. LARSON and lives in Omaha and teaches school. She will ride in the parade in the same car with the 1963 selection of “Miss Blair Bridge,” chosen especially for the occasion by the wives of the Junior Chamber members.

Obituary. Los Angeles Times, 30 Jul 2014. Retired Adm. Charles R. LARSON, the onetime commander in chief of military forces in the Pacific who became superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy to restore discipline and morale after his alma mater had been rocked by the largest cheating scandal in its history, has died. He was 77. LARSON's death Saturday at his home in Annapolis, Md., was confirmed by his son-in-law, Cmdr. Wesley HUEY, a faculty member at the academy HUEY said the four-star admiral had been diagnosed with leukemia two years ago. Born Nov. 20, 1936, in Sioux Falls, S.D., LARSON arrived at Annapolis in the 1950's, the first step in a naval career that would eventually span 40 years and take him across most of the globe. After his graduation in 1958 from the academy, where he was a classmate of John McCAIN, now a U.S. senator from Arizona, LARSON became both an aviator and a nuclear submariner, twin achievements considered rare for a Navy man. He served as a junior officer on two ballistic missile submarines and three attack submarines. According to a 2002 article in the Baltimore Sun, two of his seven Distinguished Service Medals were for his command of the USS Halibut, a submarine that retrieved sensitive equipment from Soviet vessels and tapped into Russian communication cables on the floor of the Pacific Ocean. LARSON was the first naval officer selected as a White House Fellow, and he served as naval aide to President NIXON. In 1979, at age 43, he became the second-youngest admiral in U.S. history. LARSON first served as superintendent of the Naval Academy in the mid-1980's. A decade later, after having had one of the largest responsibilities in the military as commander in chief of the U.S. Pacific Command, LARSON returned to Annapolis for an unusual second stint as superintendent. At the time, the academy was reeling from scandal. Twenty-four midshipmen had been expelled and 88 had been disciplined for sharing and lying about a stolen copy of an electrical engineering exam. "My goals are very, very simple," LARSON told a gathering of academy officials, alumni and midshipmen in 1994. "No. 1: to develop character. No. 2: to prove the worth of the service academies to the people of the United States." By many accounts, LARSON accomplished that mission. He was widely credited with shaping the academy into a more disciplined institution and with establishing a curriculum that focused on character development. "The most important thing he did for the Naval Academy was to bring it back from a deep malaise," McCAIN, LARSON's Annapolis classmate and flight school roommate, told the Baltimore Sun in 2002. After retiring from the Navy, LARSON worked in the private sector, serving on boards of companies in the defense, aerospace, energy and construction industries. He also served as vice chairman of the University System of Maryland Board of Regents and chaired a blue-ribbon task force on reforms to university governance and funding. In 2002, LARSON, who had no political experience, ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor, switching his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat to be the running mate of Kathleen KENNEDY TOWNSEND, daughter of Robert F. KENNEDY. LARSON is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sally, three daughters and seven grandchildren.
Obituary. The Washington Post,
July 28, 2014. Retired Navy Adm. Charles R. LARSON, whose
impeccable credentials led to a high-profile stint in the 1990s leading the
U.S. Naval Academy in the aftermath of the worst cheating scandal in the
military college's history, died July 26 at his home in Annapolis. He
was 77. The cause was pneumonia, said a son-in-law, Navy Cmdr. Wesley
HUEY, adding that the four-star admiral was diagnosed with leukemia two
years ago. A strong contender to succeed Colin POWELL as
chairman of the joint chiefs of staff in 1993, Adm. LARSON was
instead passed over, and he seemed on the verge of retirement when he was
asked to lead the Naval Academy. He seemed an ideal choice, with his
ramrod bearing and a career spent climbing the military ladder with
distinction. A White House Fellow under Lyndon B. JOHNSON, he
later served as a naval aide to President Richard M. NIXON and
commanded a nuclear attack submarine on an espionage mission against the
Soviets. In 1991, he was named commander in chief of the U.S. Pacific
Command in Hawaii, overseeing 350,000 military personnel spanning more than
40 countries. Adm. LARSON was a Naval Academy superintendent
from 1983 to 1986. When he again took over the Naval Academy in 1994,
he was the first four-star admiral to serve as superintendent - the
highest-ranking officer ever to oversee the 4,100-student academy. He
was also a graduate, a member of the Class of 1958 that included future
Vietnam War hero, U.S. senator and Republican presidential nominee John
McCAIN. The campus in Annapolis was still reeling from a December
1992 scandal that ensnared more than 130 midshipmen for cheating on an
electrical engineering exam. Twenty-four midshipmen were ordered
expelled, and more than 60 were reportedly found guilty of honor violations
that resulted in lesser punishments. A Navy investigation exonerated
nearly 40 midshipmen. About 10 did not return to Annapolis for
unrelated reasons. With a mandate to clean up the institution, Adm.
LARSON started a new ethics and character-development curriculum and
made efforts to restore discipline. He tightened rules about when
midshipmen could leave campus and wear civilian clothing and
made
other changes intended to given enforcement of the honor code more teeth.
Outbreaks of criminal behavior continued to roil the campus. It became
national news when midshipmen were arrested for drug use, involvement in a
car-theft ring and sexual assault. Adm. LARSON told the New
York Times in 1996 that the incidents were isolated and did not reflect
chronic problems with the academy's integrity. "We had the same number
of incidents when I was here before, just never three in one week," he said,
referring to his earlier tenure as superintendent. "They were just as
serious incidents then, but they happened one at a time." The fallout
continued in 1996 after a civilian professor at the academy, James F.
BARRY, published in The Washington Post an opinion piece saying the
school "is plagued by a serious morale problem caused by a culture of
hypocrisy, one that tolerates sexual harassment, favoritism and the covering
up of problems." Naval Academy authorities removed BARRY from
teaching duties - seemingly a punishment for speaking out. Amid
protests by the American Association of University Professors, he returned
to classroom work but soon left the academy. A review panel in 1997,
co-chaired by retired Navy admiral and former CIA director Stansfield
TURNER, concluded that academy leaders were too defensive in their
response to crises but the incidents were "not indicative of a systemic
flaw." "The most important thing he did for the Naval Academy,"
McCAIN once said of Adm. LARSON, "was to bring it back from a
deep malaise." In 1997, Adm. LARSON invited McCAIN to
lecture the entire Naval Academy on the importance of virtue in AMerican
life. Someone in the audience asked McCAIN - who earned the
nickname "McNASTY" as a young man because of his rebellious, often
reckless personal behavior - if he could reveal any "dirt" about Adm.
LARSON as a midshipman. According to an account in the Baltimore
Sun, McCAIN recalled the time when he threw a party for 300 friends
at his parents' home in Washington. The place was "completely
destroyed," he said. A prized family piano was among the casualties,
Adm. LARSON having left a cigarette on the instrument.
McCAIN said his mother viewed the future admiral as an otherwise
stabling influence on her son. "If it was me, my mom would have killed
me," the senator added. "But with Charles, my mother said, 'Oh, it was
Chuck? That's okay.'" After his naval retirement in 1998, Adm.
LARSON chaired a Maryland task force on higher education and served as
vice chairman of the University System of Maryland's Board of Regents.
In 2002, Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen KENNEDY TOWNSEND (D), a daughter
of Sen. Robert F. KENNEDY and a niece of President John F. KENNEDY,
surprised the state's political establishment by tapping Adm. LARSON
as her gubernatorial running mate. Washingtonian magazine reported
that her first choice, Freeman A. HRABOWSKI III, an African American
and president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, turned her
down, forcing the campaign to shift from and "education track" to the
"post-9/11 track." "This could prove to an act of genius if al Qaeda
gunboats show up on the Patapsco River before Election Day," the magazine
quipped. The admiral, who was as surprised as anyone by TOWNSEND's
decision to offer him the spot on her ticket, changed his political
affiliation to Democrat and explained to reporters that he was dismayed by
the hard-right tilt of the Republican Party on social issues. He was,
by all accounts, a nimble campaigner. But the team lost to then-U.S.
Rep. Robert L. EHRLICH Jr. (R) and Michael S. STEELE, an
African American lawyer who had been chairman of the state's Republican
Party. In a state that had not had a Republican governor since Spiro
AGNEW in the late 1960's, the Democratic defeat was largely blamed on
TOWNSEND. Despite the KENNEDY political name, she had
little of the KENNEDY polish on the hustings. She had a
tendency to mangle words, once calling her running mate "Ambassador
LAWSON." Charles Robert LARSON was born Nov. 20, 1936, in
Sioux Falls, S.D., and raised in Omaha, where his father was a telephone
company employee and his mother was a teacher. He initially trained as
a naval aviator, flying off aircraft carriers, but soon switched to the
nuclear submarine service, sensing accurately that they would play an
ever-grater tactical and strategic role for the Navy during the Cold War.
From 1973 to 1976, he was skipper of the nuclear attack submarine Halibut,
which conducted underwater espionage missions against the Soviet Union,
including tapping into a Russian undersea communications cable in the
western Pacific. His military decorations included the Defense
Distinguished Service Medal, seven awards of the Navy Distinguished Service
Medal, three awards of the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star Medal.
In retirement, he was board chairman of the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation,
which helps raise private money for the institution. Survivors include
his wife of 52 years, Sarah "Sally" CRAIG LARSON of Annapolis; three
daughters, Sigrid LARSON of Philadelphia, Erica LARSON of
Annapolis and Kirsten DATKO of Arnold, Md.; a sister; and seven
grandchildren.
Obituary. Baltimore Sun,
date unknown. Adm. Charles R. LARSON, the onetime
commander-in-chief of military forces in the Pacific who became
superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy to restore discipline and morale
after his alma mater had been rocked by the largest cheating scandal in its
history, died early Saturday at his home in Annapolis. He was 77.
Admiral LARSON's death was confirmed by his son-in-law, Cmdr. Wesley
HUEY, a faculty member at the academy. Commander HUEY said
the four-star admiral had been diagnosed
with leukemia two years ago. "Admiral LARSON's death is a great
loss for the Navy family and the U.S. Naval Academy," said Vice Admiral
Walter E. "Ted" CARTER Jr., who took over as the academy's
superintendent Wednesday. "He was a great man who served his nation
with distinction, honor and dignity." A native of South Dakota,
Admiral LARSON went to Annapolis in the 1950's, the first step in a
naval career that would eventually span 40 years and most of the globe.
After his graduation from the academy, where he was a classmate of John
McCAIN, now a U.S. senator from Arizona, Admiral LARSON became
both an aircraft-based aviator and a nuclear submariner, twin achievements
considered rare for a Navy man. He served as a junior officer on two
ballistic missile submarines and three attack submarines. According to
a 2002 article in The Baltimore Sun, two of his seven distinguished service
medals were for his command of the USS Halibut, a submarine that retrieved
sensitive equipment from Soviet vessels and tapped into Russian
communications cables on the floor of the Pacific Ocean. Admiral
LARSON was the first naval officer selected as a White House Fellow, and
he served as naval aide to President Richard M. NIXON. In 1979,
at age 43, he became the second-youngest admiral in U.S. history.
Admiral LARSON first served as superintendent of the Naval Academy in
the mid-1980's. A decade later, after having had one of the largest
responsibilities in the military as commander-in-chief of the U.S. Pacific
Command, Admiral LARSON returned to Annapolis for an unusual second
stint as superintendent. At the time, the academy was reeling from
scandal. Twenty-four midshipment had been expelled and 88 had been
disciplined for sharing and lying about a stolen copy of an electrical
engineering exam. "My goals are very, very simple," LARSON told a gathering of academy
officials, alumni and midshipmen in 1994. "No. 1: to develop
character. No. 2: to prove the worth of the service academies to the
people of the United States." By many accounts, LARSON
accomplished that mission. He was widely credited with shaping the
academy into a more disciplined institution and with establishing a
curriculum that focused on character development. "The most important
thing he did for the Naval Academy was to bring it back from a deep
malaise," McCAIN, LARSON's Annapolis classmate and flight
school roommate, told the Baltimore Sun in 2002. After retiring from
the Navy, LARSON worked in the private sector, serving on boards of
companies in the defense, aerospace, energy and construction industries.
He also served as vice chairman of the University System of Maryland Board
of Regents and chaired a blue-ribbon task force on reforms to university
governance and funding. In 2002, LARSON, who had no political
experience, ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor, switching his party
affiliation from Republican to Democrat to be Kathleen Kennedy TOWNSEND's
running mate. Ms. TOWNSEND's selection of the retired admiral
was a secret until just hours before the announcement, and it surprised the
Democratic establishment. Ms. TOWNSEND said Saturday that she
chose Admiral LARSON because of his reputation for integrity, his
experience in the military and because, just a year after the September 2001
terrorist attacks, public concern about homeland security ran high.
"He was a real leader," Ms. TOWNSEND, who served two terms as
lieutenant governor, said of Admiral LARSON. "He had the
qualities of brilliance and honesty - precisely the qualities you yearn for
in a leader. He was just what the Naval Academy needed." A
memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Naval Academy
Chapel. Admiral LARSON is survived by his wife of 52 years,
Sally; and three daughters, Sigrid LARSON of Philadelphia, Erica
LARSON of Annapolis and Kirsten DATKO of Arnold.
Obituary. New York Times
3 Aug 2014. Adm. Charles R. LARSON, 77, Dies; Twice Led Naval
Academy. Adm. Charles R. LARSON, a former military commander in
the Pacific who twice led the United States Naval Academy, the second time
to help it recover from the worst cheating scandal in its history, died on
July 26 at his home in Annapolis, Md. He was 77. The academy
said the cause was pneumonia; he was found to have leukemia two years ago.
Admiral LARSON had been superintendent of the academy from 1983 to
1986 when he was appointed for the second time, in 1994; he was the first
four-star admiral to take the post. The Navy sought his help in
changing the ethical atmosphere of the academy after 134 midshipmen were
accused of cheating on
an
electrical engineering exam in 1992; 24 were expelled and more than 80
disciplined. "My goals are very, very simple," LARSON told a
gathering of academy officials, alumni and midshipmen in 1994. "No. 1:
to develop character. No. 2: to prove the worth of the service
academies to the people of the United States." Admiral LARSON
tightened discipline, revoking some student privileges, and instituted a
curriculum emphasizing character development. But the ethical climate
changed slowly. In 1995, two midshipmen were arrested on charges of
trying to buy LSD from undercover police officers, and 24 others were linked
to drug selling or buying; 15 cadets were expelled. In response,
Admiral LARSON ordered all 4,000 of the academy's cadets to be tested
for drugs. In 1996, a senior and several former students were indicted
on charges of running a car-theft ring, and sex-abuse charges were filed
against another student. Admiral LARSON suspended weekday
liberty and cut back on weekend leave. He also declared a weeklong
"stand-down," a campuswide period of reflection about personal ethics.
Some thought he was not doing enough. James BARRY, a civilian
academy teacher writing in The Washington Post, described "a serious moral
problem caused by a culture of hypocrisy, one that tolerates sexual
harassment, favoritism and the covering up of problems." He suggested
that athletes in particular were permitted to abridge the honor code.
Admiral LARSON disputed his allegations. "There is a society
out there right now that is more worried about what is legal than what is
right," he told the military historian H. Michael GELFAND in an
interview for Mr. GELFAND's 2006 boo, "Sea Change at
Annapolis: The United States Naval Academy, 1949-2000." He added, "We
don't stand up and say, 'I'm going to do what is right.' I wanted to fix
that." Charles Robert LARSON was born in Sioux Falls, S.D., on
Nov. 20, 1936, the son of a telephone company technician and a
schoolteacher. He was a class president at the Naval Academy and
graduated in 1958. A classmate and friend there was John McCAIN,
the future Navy pilot, prisoner of war in North Vietnam and United States
senator from Arizona. Admiral LARSON was later a close national
security adviser to Senator McCAIN. Admiral LARSON was
awarded seven Distinguished Service Medals, two of them for his command of
the nuclear attack submarine Halibut, which tapped into Soviet undersea
communication cables on an espionage mission. He served as a military
aide to President Richard M. NIXON from 1969 to 1971 and later
commanded the Navy's submarine fleet in the Mediterranean. He was on
the staff of the chief of naval operations from 1978 to 1982, directing
long-range planning before his first appointment to lead the Naval Academy.
He was promoted to admiral in 1979 at 43 the second youngest in American
history. Admiral LARSON was commander of the Second Fleet in
the Atlantic and later the Pacific Fleet before being named to lead all
United States military forces in the Pacific, overseeing 350,000 service
members. In 1993 he was among a dozen military commanders under
consideration to succeed Gen. Colin POWELL as chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff. (President Bill CLINTON picked Gen. John M.
SHALIKASHVILI, the NATO Commander.) He stepped down as academy
superintendent in 1998, retiring from the Navy. he then served on
corporate boards in the military and aerospace industries and was a founder
and chairman of an international security consulting firm, ViaGlobal, based
in Annapolis. He was also chairman of the Naval Academy Foundation,
which helps raise money for the institution. A former Republican,
Admiral LARSON entered politics for the first time in 2002, when
Kathleen KENNEDY TOWNSEND, a Democrat and the eldest daughter of
Robert F. KENNEDY, chose him as her running mate in an unsuccessful
campaign for governor in Maryland. He also served as a national
security adviser to Gov. Howard DEAN of Vermont in his unsuccessful
bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004. Admiral
LARSON is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sally; three daughters,
Sigrid and Erica LARSON and Kirsten DATKO; and seven
grandchildren.
