Synopsis:
Obituary. Kennard Enterprise, 25 Dec 1908. Little Pearl E. ANDERSEN, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anton ANDERSEN, was taken ill last week. Medical attendance was had at once and for a time responded favorably to treatment with good prospects of a speedy recovery, but a change for the worse took place indicating scarlet fever which later terminated in mern coup. Dr. Pruner performed the delicate operation, tracheotormy [sic], which greatly relieved the little sufferer, but all in vain, as fever had made too great advance to be overcome by medical skill and humane endurance. Convulsion was the immediate cause that took the dear one from this life to the better life beyond. Pearl E. ANDERSEN was born March 8, 1908 and died December 16, 1908, and was laid to rest in the Kennard cemetery December 17. The services were held at the home, A F. SCHAFER officiating. The funeral cortege was large considering nature of the disease. The floral offerings were many and beautiful.

Synopsis:
Anton ANDERSEN and Andrew H. HOIER were born in Denmark.
Andrew H. HOIER was b. 16 Nov 1879 d. 13 Nov 1951 and his wife, Kristine NIELSEN was b. 5 Oct 1877 d. 22 Sep 1949. They are buried in the Blair Cemetery, Blair, Washington Co, NE (84/2/11-12).
Memories by Ethel ANDERSEN HOIER. Grandma and Grandpa were hard working, busy people. I remember grandpa in the field with his horses and grandma doing the milking. It was fun to visit there and to help feed the Rhode Island Red chickens with Penny, their dog following us around. After the milking was done and the horses fed, Pearl and Goldie had supper ready in the old summer kitchen. I remember Alvin and Andrew in their baseball suits. Those Sunday games were exciting. The old house where my mother grew up was still there. We all liked to play in that. We often drove our horse and buggy to grandma's when a new baby was expected at our house, or after a rain to exchange flowers to transplant. It was grandma who showed me how to do that. I remember her diamond shaped flower beds. Grandpa seemed like a quiet man but he liked to talk politics. I'm not sure which party he belonged to, but he had strong opinions. He faithfully read the Christian Science Monitor. After they moved to Blair, I remember seeing him scything weeds along the R.R. tracks smoking his pipe and probably thinking who should be the next president. Other little pleasant memories: Grandma playing her organ and singing to us, her big coffee cakes with cardamon spice; jello with whipped cream spread on top of the bowl; her willingness to help others with spring buthering and being there when a new baby was born. I remember grandpa sitting near the stove, cleaning his pipe and keeping the fire burning. "Thanks for the memories!"

Synopsis:
Obituary. Blair Enterprise, 28 Mar 1919. Report the death of Mrs. Soren SVENDGAARD, which occurred at the farm home four miles southeast of Arlington on last Tuesday morning, from a brief illness with influenza, was sorrowfully received by hosts of friends of that estimable woman and her interesting family in the community where she was known and loved for her many womanly virtues. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas MADSEN, highly esteemed residents of the Orum and Kennard neighborhood for many years. The husband, who is reported critically ill with the influenza plague, four young children, two sons and two daughters, aged respectively eight, six, four and two years, are bereft of her love, affection and mother's care. Three brothers, Andrew MADSEN of Lyons, Burt Co, Harold MADSEN, the merchant at Dale Siding and Lawrence, living with his parents, are surviving near relatives. The hand of fate has dealt harshly with this estimable family. After a life of wedded bliss, covering a period of eight or nine years by intelligent effort and painstaking industry, they purchased a 160 acre farm, one of the most valuable in the Co, with a fine, large, modern residence and splendid improvements throughout and were enjoying life, prospering contented and happy. They drove to Arlington to do some shopping one day last spring leaving the children and a young girl at home. When they returned they found their home and all its contents a smoking heap of ruins, nothing saved, not even a change of clothing, nothing but what they were wearing. But they didn't despair; they immediately set to work and erected a new home, better and more costly than the one destroyed. And they were so happy in the occupancy of it and hopeful for the future. It's hard to reconcile oneself to the belief that His way [sic] are always merciful and just.
Obituary. Blair Enterprise, 23 May 1929. Mrs. Tom MADSEN (Anna's Mother). Maren Christina LARSEN was born August 14, 1864 at Smerup, Denmark. She came with her father to America in June, 1882 going to St. Paul, Nebr. She came to Omaha in the same year and was married to Thomas MADSEN Sept. 16, 1887. To this union were born four children, Andrew M. of Lyons, Harold J. of Blair, Lawrence P. of Lincoln; one daughter, Anna, Mrs. Soren SVENDGAARD, who died in March, 1919. Mrs. MADSEN came to Blair in 1890 and has lived in this community until her death May 18, 1929. She was baptized and confirmed in the Danish Lutheran church in Denmark. She was always a kind and loving wife, and a devoted mother. Her thoughts were always of others first and she will not only be greatly missed by her immediate family, but by her many friends as she was always ready to lend a helping hand when her health permitted. She leaves to mourn her loss besides her husband and children, one brother, Rasmus LARSEN of Florence, eleven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and her many numerous friends. She had been a member of the Danish Sisterhood lodge for several years. Services were held from the Danish church Tuesday, May 21, Rev. NELSEN and Rev. UNDERWOOD having charge and interment was made in the Blair cemetery.
Obituary. Blair Pilot-Tribune, Jul 1929. (Anna's Father) Thomas MADSEN. Thomas MADSEN was born April 27, 1863, in Truhland, Denmark. He came to America at the age of seventeen years and resided in Omaha, Neb. for about ten years. While living in Omaha he was married to Christina LARSEN and to this union were born four children: Andrew M. of Lyons, Harold J. of Blair and Lawrence P. of Lincoln, and one daughter, Anna, Mrs. Soren SVENDGAARD, who died in March, 1919. He moved to Blair with his family in 1890 and has lived here until his death July 19, 1929. He had been in failing health for the past year and since the death of his wife and companion last May he had gradually become weaker until death claimed him to relieve him of his suffering. He was a loving and kind husband and father and always of a very happy disposition. The hospitality of this home will be greatly missed by their many friends. Besides the children who are left ot mourn are one brother in Watonga, Oklahoma, three brothers in Denmark and several grandchildren. He had been an active member of the Danish Brotherhood Lodge and also the Modern Woodman of America. Services were held July 22, 1929 at the home at 1:30 o'clock and from the Danish Lutheran church at two. Rev. NIELSEN and Rev. UNDERWOOD had charge of the services. The Danish Brotherhood had charge of the services at the cemetery.

Synopsis:
Memories of a Grateful Grandson! by Alfred ANDERSEN. In my earliest years we lived only a hop skip and a jump from Grandpa and Grandma ANDERSEN's place. I could lead my horse over to a porch and jump on to make my frequent visits. I had to go through uncle Nels JENSEN's place. I was always glad when I was able to get through without uncle Nels seeing me. He always asked a lot of questions and delayed my visit. Grandpa and Grandma were always gracious. There was always a piece of pie in the warming oven of her stove. Uncle Alvin had the 1st radio I had ever seen. You had to wear ear phones to hear. He would often disassemble them, so that he could hear with one ear piece and I could hear with the other. I distinctly recall hearing the call letters of the Pittsburgh Pa station KDKA. My oh my what a revolutionary thing, I thought. What will they think of next! Clifford recalls very clearly how on one of my excapades, my horse must have lost patience with me and rather intentionally brushed up against a tree, brushed me off and kerplop, I fell to the ground. He still loves to tell that one! After the 10th grade at March School I went away to Blair high for the 11th and 12th grades. During this time my grandparents had moved to Desterville. I lived with them for 4 years. I was really a lucky kid. I had two sets of grandparents, both of whom I knew real well. Please don't tell anyone but Pete and Emma were my special favorites. Gee I wish I could live it over again.

More Memories of Our Grandparents by Clifford Alvin ANDERSEN. I must have spent a lot of time on their farm for I sure have a lot of fond memories of that big house with the summer house just outside the door. I remember grinding coffee beans in that hand operated coffee grinder and helping to gather eggs in that long white chicken house, and playing in the grove of trees just north of the chicken house. And sleeping in her feather bed and helping grandpa go after the cows and checking the windmill that was down the hill from the barn. And I remember that Andy and Alvin had mounted a 50 gallon drum up on a platform that was high enough that you could stand under it and they would fill it with water and by evening the water was warm enough to take a shower right out where God and everybody could see. This is fun. remember when Andy and Alvin bought a Crosley Radio with a great big speaker and three big dials that you have to fiddle with to cut out the static. I remember listening to the a on the street on WOW from Omaha. I remember when Alvin and Helen were married and we were in the parlor when all of a sudden there was a terrible racket outside caused by chivaleers (not in my dictionary) dumping all kinds of junk farm equipment out on the front lawn, and then they were all invited in for refreshments. We really do have a wonderful heritage and I'm glad to have lived during these times and been a part of so wonderful a family.
