Obituary. Blair Enterprise, 21 May 1959. Services For Ed A. JENSEN Saturday. Lifetime Farmer and Stockman Ill But a Short Time. Ed A. JENSEN, well-known Washington County farmer and stockman, died Wednesday evening at Memorial Community Hospital. The 78-year-old man, who had been a lifetime resident of this county, had been ill but a short time. He was stricken suddenly Tuesday afternoon and rushed to Memorial Community Hospital, where he was administered oxygen. His condition was pronounced serious. Edward Arthur JENSEN was born December 18, 1880 at Blair, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Soren JENSEN, who were pioneer farmers and landowners in this area. He was one of a family of 13 children and he grew to manhood surrounded by the farming activities which his father and his family followed. On April 20, 1904, he was married to Amy ANDERSON and for a time the couple lived on the farm in the Rose Hill district now occupied by his son, Earl A. JENSEN. Later, Mr. and Mrs. JENSEN moved to the family farm north of Blair. Four children were born to the JENSENs. They are Earl A. JENSEN who farms near Rose Hill, Mrs. J. Hilton RHOADES (Lucille) of Blair, Mrs. William ELWELL (Alice) of Garden Grove, Calif., and Stanley M. JENSEN, who operates the home place in the Cuming City district. There are five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. JENSEN is survived by his wife, Amy, and the four children. Also surviving are three brothers, Nels M. JENSEN and Henry C. JENSEN of Blair and Albert A. JENSEN of Millard, Nebraska. Two sisters, Mrs. Henry VOSS (Myrtle) and Mrs. Ed GILBERTSON (Esther), both of Blair, also survive. Active Livestock Raiser. Mr. JENSEN, in his younger days, was an active stockman as well as a farmer and he was to have been recognized Wednesday evening at a dinner held at the Livestock Exchange Building in Omaha as a fifty-year shipper to the South Omaha market. Although his stock feeding activities have been curtailed as he had become older, Mr. JENSEN still held an active interest in the cattle and hogs raised on the farm, giving them the close attention which had so frequently brought him top market prices as a more active feeder many years ago. Wednesday evening his sons, Earl and Stanley, attended the dinner in Omaha on his behalf to receive the plaque and pin which were to be tendered him as a pioneer livestock raiser and shipper. Death came suddenly before the men could return from the dinner to show their father the recognition which he had been accorded. Funeral services are to be held Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Rex BEAR in charge. Burial, under the direction of the Bendorf Funeral Home will be made in the Blair Cemetery. Mrs. ELWELL of California, will be unable to attend the funeral services, having been released from a west coast hospital only a few hours prior to her father's death. Obituary. Blair Newspaper, 1932. (John Hilton RHOADES's mother). Blair Editor's Wife Dies at Her Home. Special Dispatch to the World-Herald. Blair, Neb., Sept. 16. - Mrs. John A. RHOADES, wife of the publisher of the Enterprise here, died this morning. Rites will be held at 2:30 Sunday at Blair Congregational church. Mrs. RHOADES' father, L.F. HILTON, established the first printing business here in 1869. In 1894 he sold the shop and assumed management of the Hoof and Horn at Omaha, which became the present Journal Stockman. He later moved back here to run the Enterprise. Surviving are Mr. RHOADES, two daughters, Mrs. Phillip O'HANLON and Priscilla M. RHOADES, and a son, J. Hilton RHOADES, all of Blair.
Obituary. Blair Enterprise,
26 Apr 1956. (J. Hilton RHOADES's father). John A.
RHOADES, 82, Retired Enterprise Publisher, Is Dead. Was One of Few
Remaining Early Day Business Men. John A. RHOADES, for many
years Publisher of The Enterprise, passed away at the Blair hospital early
Tuesday morning, April 24th, a victim of cancer. He had been in
failing health for many months and had been hospitalized and under the
doctor's care most of the time since last November. He was 82 years of
age. Mr. RHOADES was one of the few remaining early-day
businessmen in Blair, having come here with his parents in 1879. He
had shared in the operation of his father's brick-making plant, had taught
school, served five terms as County Superintendent, operated and coal and
feed business and published The Enterprise. His life was varied and he
saw Blair grow from a town of less than 1000 to the city that it is today.
He was born November 20th, 1873 on a farm in Harrison County, Iowa. He
was the youngest in a family of six children, all of his brothers and
sisters having preceded him in death. The family moved to Blair when
he was five years of age, his father engaging in the brick manufacturing
business. Blair was a growing town then and this was one of the
thriving businesses of the community. He attended the Blair schools,
graduating with the Blair High School class of 1892 with a class of only two
- Mr. RHOADES and Miss Adele FRENCH, who is still remembered
by many of the older generation. As he grew to manhood he shared in
the operation of the brick yard. Later he taught school in many of the
rural districts finally serving as Superintendent at Kennard. After
that he was elected County Superintendent for five two-year terms. In
1915 he purchased the Tribune from L.A. WILLIAMS. The Tribune
at that time was located in a frame building on east Washington street.
It was one of four newspapers in the town at that time. While
operating the Tribune he installed the first linotype to be used in Blair.
Those were stormy days in the newspaper business, for besides the four Blair
newspapers, there was one at Herman, Arlington and Ft. Calhoun.
Competition was keen and he worked many long hours at the business.
Within a short time his health failed and he was advised by his physician to
leave the indoor work and try farming for a time. He then sold the
Tribune to the late Thomas T. OSTERMAN who, at that time was
operating the "Democrat" in a small building on the site of the present
implement store of Kenneth PENCE. It was at that time that the
name Democrat was dropped from local newspaper circles and Mr. OSTERMAN
retained the name of the Tribune. After a short time of farming and
improved health, Mr. RHOADES returned to Blair to operate a coal and
feed business. Offices were in the building now housing the KORSHOJ
Construction Co. and the coal and hay sheds covered the now-vacant lots east
of the KORSHOJ building. In 1919, the late L.F. HILTON,
who had operated The Enterprise in the basement of the MATTHIESEN
building in the quarters now housing the Frank JOHNSON Paint store,
passed away. Mr. HILTON was the father of Mrs. RHOADES
and it fell the lot of Mr. and Mrs. RHOADES to keep the newspaper
going. For a time they ran both businesses but later devoted their
entire time to The Enterprise, the operation of which he directed until his
retirement in October, 1951. On January 20th, 1905 Mr. RHOADES
married Miss Blanche HILTON of Blair and to this union three children
were born, all of whom survive his passing. They are Mrs. Philip
O'HANLON (Lozein) of Blair; J. Hilton RHOADES, the present
Publisher of The Enterprise; and Mrs. Fred LIND (Priscilla) of Omaha.
Mrs. RHOADES passed away September 16, 1932 and for ten years Mr.
RHOADES continued to make his home alone, at the family residence at
Third and South streets. On October 31, 1942 he was married to Mrs.
Bessie FRENCH, a marriage which provided much companionship and
comfort to him in his declining years. After his retirement and relief
from business obligations, they did a limited amount of traveling with they
enjoyed keenly. Mrs. RHOADES spent many hours at his bedside
caring for him during his last illness. During his business life he
took an active part in many civic affairs. He served as President of
the Blair Chamber of Commerce and for many years was an officer in the
Congregational church. He was Deacon Emeritus at the time of his
death. Surviving besides his wife and immediate family are five
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be
held at 3:30 P.M. this (Thursday) afternoon at the Congregational church
with the Rev. Donald SCHEUER conducting the service. Burial
under the direction of the Bendorf Funeral Home is to be made in the Blair
cemetery. Masonic services will be conducted at the grave. The
