Mr. JONES was a graduate of the University of Nebraska and earned a master's degree from the University of Wyoming. He served as a navigator in the Army Air Force during World War II, and was a prisoner-of-war in Germany for more than a year. After his retirement from a career in the Air Force, he served as the Co water engineer for Napa, Calif., for more than 20 years. He is survived by a daughter, Jeanne J. KINNEY of Shelton, Wash,; a son, Keith M. JONES of Redmond, Wash.; four grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Jean NELSON of Fort Collins, Colo., and Paula J. WEHRMAN of Mill Creek, Wash. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy (RENARD) JONES, in 2002.
Obituary. Letter from Family, found at Find-A-Grave. Nov 2006. Robert K. "Keith" JONES was born in Reserve, Kansas, Sept 25, 1922, and died Nov 4, 2006 in Olympia, Washington. He was the oldest of three children born to Paul and Leona JONES. When he was a small child, the family moved to a farm near Washington, Nebraska, about 25 miles Northwest of Omaha, where he spent his childhood, attending the rural Mattes school with 10 grades attending together in two rooms. From there he attended South High School in Omaha, graduating in 1940. When WWII broke out, he was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving as a navigator. He was shot down over Austria and was a POW for 10 months at Stalag Luft 1, Barth, Germany. After the war ended, he returned to the University of Nebraska, and began seriously dating a girl from the same rural farming community, who was also attending the University of Nebraska, Margaret "Peggy" RENARD. Keith and Peggy had had only a couple of dates before he came home from Europe in July 1945, but like many returning GI's, he didn't waste time. They were engaged by Christmas and married in August 1946. In 1948, Keith graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering and accepted an engineering job in Argentina. They stayed only a few months, but for two farm kids from Nebraska, it opened up a whole new world and they talked of it all their lives. Returning to Nebraska, they lived in Omaha until the Korean War when Keith was recalled to active duty, so from 1950 to 1968 they were a part of the U.S. Air Force. Travel in the military took Keith on flights to many parts of the world and on assignments throughout the United States. Major events during this time included the birth of Jeanne in Spokane, WA in 1955 and Keith in Tampa, FL, in 1959. When he discontinued active flight status, he continued with his civil engineering career, earning a Masters degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Wyoming in 1963. He served one year in Thailand building bases during the Vietnam War. This made three wars he had served in: WWII, Korea and Vietnam, and a total military service of 26 years, so he decided it was time to try civilian life. After retirement from the USAF, he worked for Napa County, CA, as a flood control engineer. He enjoyed checking out drainages throughout the county and talking with residents about their flooding problems. He often would load the family into the car on a Sunday for a ride to explore a pretty part of the county or interesting site that he had discovered in his work. When he first came to work for Napa County in 1969 there were about a dozen wineries, and many fruit and nut orchards. He and Peggy traveled to many places, but always enjoyed coming back home to Napa, where they lived for 40 years. Peggy passed away in April, 2003, and Keith continued on, but a major focus in his life was gone. In November, 2005, his children persuaded him to move to Washington State to be closer to them, his grandchildren and his sister Paula, of Mill Creek, WA. He was active in the Napa Engineers Society and the Retired Officers Association. After retirement from Napa County, he was active in the Sons In Retirement, holding several offices. A lifelong golfer, he also enjoyed bowling, bocce ball, and numerous card games, including a regular poker game for many years. Up until about eight years before his death, he was a cigar smoker, and even those of us who can't abide smoking concede that the ever present cigar was definitely a part of Keith's persona. He is survived by his daughter, Jeanne, her husband Andrew and grandchildren Aaron and Laura, and son Keith, his wife Nancy and grandchildren Ben and Rachel. He is also survived by both younger sisters, Paula WEHRMAN, her husband Bud, of Mill Creek, WA, and Mary Jean NELSON of Ft. Collins, CO., numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Keith will be buried with full military honors at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent WA Friday, November 17, 2006 at 2:45 P.M. Memorials in his name can be made to: The University of Nebraska. Obituary. Monarch Society. Nov 2013. Mary Jean JONES NELSON. (November 8, 1923 - November 8, 2013) Mary Jean JONES NELSON of Ft. Collins and Estes Park, Colorado, died 8 November 2013, on her 90th birthday, after two months of various health issues. She died peacefully, in no pain, under hospice care. Mary Jean, as she was known, was born 8 November 1923 on a farm near Reserve, Kansas, the second of three children born to Paul and Leona JONES. Shortly thereafter the family moved to a farm near Blair, Nebraska. Education was very important to Leona, and all three of her children completed college. The first 10 grades of Mary Jean's education took place in a two-room schoolhouse, Mattes School District #41, near the farm. She finished her last two years at Omaha South High School. She attended the University of Nebraska from 1940-1944 and graduated in Home Economics. While in college, she had a variety of jobs including keeping records of dairy production, editing a monthly newsletter, and modeling clothing. After she graduated, Mary Jean moved to Seattle, Washington, for an internship in the King County Hospital Dietetic Program, looking forward to new experiences. She tried out skiing for the first time, and the driver of the car, who drove because he was the only person who even had a car, was Laurence S. NELSON Jr., a medical intern who eventually became her husband. Larry, as he was known, called her "Tiger", and anyone who knew Mary Jean knows exactly why. In June of 1945, Mary Jean moved to Baltimore, Maryland to work as a therapeutic dietitian in the Women's Clinic of Johns Hopkins Hospital. It was interesting for many reasons, including the German prisoners of war who worked in the kitchen there. She and Larry married in February of 1946. Larry was called to active duty aboard the U.S.S. Iowa, and after an eventful honeymoon trip, he reported to the ship and from there the couple moved around to wherever the Iowa was stationed. After the war, they relocated to Salina, Kansas, where Larry went into medical practice with his father. The couple had three children, Lise Ann, James Laurence (deceased) and Laurence Strong III. Mary Jean was active in the community, including the League of Women Voters. She played golf and bridge, which activities she continued for the rest of her life. Larry died in July of 1964 of heart problems. Mary Jean started art classes at a local college, Marymount, and ultimately pursued a Masters and a Doctorate in Art History at the University of Kansas. In 1968, after completing her Masters, she moved to Ft. Collins to teach Art History at Colorado State University. She taught at CSU until her retirement in 1984, after which she moved to San Diego, California, where she taught a few classes and volunteered at art institutions. She moved back to Colorado in 2002. She considered the signal event of her life to be her introduction to foreign travel through a summer program at CSU. She traveled frequently after that, to many different parts of the world, and only gave it up a few years before her death. She wrote of her travels in letters to friends and family, which she collected when she returned to the States. She compiled them and letters from other trips into a collection she called "Worlds of Fun." She worked for over 20 years on the genealogy of Larry's and her families, and chronicled it in a volume she called, "From There to Here: A Personal History of a Family." She also wrote her autobiography, "On Second Thought: Reconsideration of a Life." Mary Jean is survived by two children and her sister, Paul WEHRMAN, of Mill Creek, Washington. She wrote her own epitaph: "Let there be no tears. Simply draw a ring of stars around my name and then forget me. The stars are for my parents, for my husband, for my children, and for the galaxy of friends I have been privileged to know and enjoy." In lieu of flowers, Mary Jean requested that donations be sent to the Spenceer Museum of Art, PO Box 928, Lawrence KS 66044. There will be no memorial service, but a social gathering is scheduled for Sunday, Dec 8, 2013 from 2-5 pm at the University Club in Lory Student Center, CSU. Directions can be found at www.sc.colostate.edu/university-club.aspx.

Synopsis:
Joseph GUTSCHOW, Walter's father, was born in Mecklenburg, Germany in Jul 1838 and emigrated in 1865. He went to St. Louis where he worked as a wagonmaker. By the early 1880's, Joe was in Blair where he may have worked at his trade for a time, but by August 1888, the local Blair newspaper reported that "landlord GUTSCHOW of City Hotel bought two lots between his hotel and Blair House in order to build a stable. In 1895, Joe returned to Germany where he married Sophia M. WAGNER, born in Mecklenburg in 1862, and returned with her to America. Walter was their only child. As a young man, he spent several years in Germany with his grandmother.
Article. Blair Democrat, 5 Oct 1905. That Fish Creek Ditch. Joseph GUTSCHOW Will Present a Petition to the County Board Objecting to Mode of Constructing the Ditch Across his Farm. Joseph GUTSCHOW is circulating a petition which will be presented to the county board, objecting to the way in which the Fish creek ditch is being constructed through his land and says if the ditch is left as now intended it will leave pools of stagnant water that will be a breeding place for all kinds of disease germs, especially cholera and typhoid fever. Mr. GUTSCHOW says he only wants done what is right and says money is no good for his rights. The petition which is being freely signed, is as follows: To the Honorable Board of Supervisors of Washington County, Nebraska. Gentlemen: - I beg to call your attention to the unlawful and negligent manner in which the Fish creek ditch is being constructed across my land. There are two things in particular in which the ditch is being improperly and negligently constructed. By the construction of the new ditch the old bed of Fish creek is abandoned in several places and the outlet for such abandoned portions is closed up, thereby leaving large pools of water which cannot escape and which will become stagnant and cause injury to life and health of residents of the community, and more particularly to the lives and health of persons residing upon my land. Second. - There is a large creek which runs across my land and which had a sufficient outlet into Fish creek and from Fish creek into the Missouri river. As the ditch is now being constructed, this creek is now required to discharge the waters into a dead end of Fish creek and has no sufficient outlet and results in flooding my land with backwater, refuse and debris of all kinds and renders my land, by reason of such illegal conduct, of no value.
As an adult, Walter helped his parents
manage their properties (they were in the hotel business until 1909 when he
traded the hotel for a 320-acre farm in Crofton, NE and he already owned the
farm north of Blair that is still owned by the family) and was a cashier in
the bank in Blair when he married Verna.
Obituary. Blair Tribune, Sep 1922. (Bernie LUNDT's father) Another Pioneer Citizen Passes Peacefully Away. Last Tuesday morning at 4:00 o'clock the spirit of G.[Gustav] G.[Gottlieb] LUNDT left is tenement of clay and returned to the maker of all things. Mr. LUNDT had been confined to his bed since early in April from trouble superinduced by diabetes, and had been given the tenderest care by his devoted wife and family, but owing to his age and physical infirmities he had not strength to combat the disease. Gustav Gottlieb LUNDT was born in Hamburg, Germany, September 11, 1844, and came to America in 1867. He remained in New York for a year and then came to Nebraska, locating at Ft. Calhoun. Later he worked in the Rioridan hardware store in old DeSoto and came to Blair in 1869, when the town was in its infancy. He was one of the first to buy a lot in the village and engaged in the hardware business for himself, on a limited scale. In 1886 he took into partnership with him his brother-in-law, F.W. ARNDT, and remained actively in business until failing eyesight and failing health in 1903 made it imperative for him to retire. The blindness grew with passing years and for a number of years previous to his death he was entirely sightless, but was able to find his way about town, and until a couple of years ago when he was knocked down by an automobile, he was a familiar object on the streets, always enjoying a conversation with his friends, and was a man well posted on current events of county, state and nation. In the year 1878 he was married to Miss Jennie C. ARNDT, a sister of F.W. ARNDT, still of this city. One child, a daughter, Dora, was born to them. She became the wife of J.W. SAS. Mrs. LUNDT died in 1885. In 1887 Mr. LUNDT went to Germany, where at Keil, he was married to Miss Marie LEHMAN and brought his bride to Blair. Four children were the fruits of this marriage, Wilma, now Mrs. George H. KELLOGG, of North Platte; Gustav, Bernhard and Theodore, all of whom were present when the father passed away. Synopsis:
Article. Blair Enterprise, 16 Aug 1951. Gabby HAYS Top Attraction at Blair Restaurant Monday Morning. Gabby HAYES, Idol of the youngsters for his work in film and television shows, was in Blair early Monday. As if by magic, the word spread that he was here and he was immediately swamped with young admirers who wanted a scrap of paper bearing his autograph. Mr. HAYES, his wife and a driver, stopped for breakfast at the Home Cafe. Before his bacon and eggs were scarcely in the skillet some sharp-eyed youngster spotted him and the mob scene began. The 66-year-old screen star was enroute to New York City where he will take part in another television show. His current sponsor is the Quaker Oats company. HAYES, whose real name is George HAYES, told The Enterprise taht he had been in show business for 50 years. He got into the movies in 1928 while the flickers were still the silent type. In the 23 years since his first Hollywood contract he has made 174 movies. Gabby expressed much interest in television and stated that he enjoyed his work very much but he maintained that movies will be improved to the place where they will never be supplanted by television. In the above picture, restaurant operator John YOUNG and Gabby are shown having a heart-to-heart talk.
