He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. of Blair. Funeral services will be held at the Baptist church on Friday at 2 p.m. with Rev. A.W. NEWELL officiating assisted by Rev. T.J. REESE and interment will be made in the Blair cemetery. His death following so closely after the death of his son-in-law Frank L. Obituary. Blair Pilot-Tribune, 8 Sep 1938. Mrs. WULF Dies Here At Age 83. Prominent German Woman Raised Family Alone After Mate Died. Mrs. Wiebke WULF, 83, well-known German resident of the community since 1876, who raised her four daughters and two sons from childhood after her husband's death half a century ago, and at the same time developed extensive farmland holdings, died Sunday at her home, 408 west Lincoln street. Death was attributed to infirmities of old age. Mentally alert and physically active almost to the end, Mrs. WULF only two weeks ago had observed her birthday anniversary. As Wiebke PETERS she was born at Rendsburg, Bentenburg, Germany, August 23, 1855. She came to Washington Co March 28, 1876 with Detlef WULF, who had come here previously to establish a homestead in Lincoln township and then returned for his bride. Their marriage was performed here on April 3, 1876 by the Rev. H.C. Jul FRESE, sr., German Lutheran pastor, who was the father of the present pastor of Trinity church here. A number of years later, with farm debts still outstanding, Mr. WULF died. Her children ranging in age from three to 12 years, Mrs. WULF undertook the task of raising them and at the same time paying off the farm debt. That she was successful was shown by the fact that when she retired and moved into Blair 30 years ago, she had not only cleared the debts on the home place but also had acquired considerably more valuable land. Mrs. WULF is survived by two daughters Mrs. Henry KUHR and Mrs. Charles REEH, and by two sons, Detlef and Fred WULF. A daughter, Mrs. Andrew JENSEN died four years ago. Also listed among the survivors are 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, all living in this vicinity. Mrs. WULF, confirmed as a member of the German Lutheran church while a girl in Germany, had been a member of Trinity Lutheran church here during her 30 years of residence in Blair, and had been active in affairs of the Ladies Aid. Because of the large number of persons desiring to attend the funeral, the services were held at First Methodist church yesterday at 2 p.m. The Rev. H.C. Jul FRESE officiated and burial was in Blair cemetery. Pallbearers were six grandsons, Albert KUHR, Clarence KUHR, Bernard WULF, James WULF, Freddie WULF and Harland JENSEN.
Obituary. Blair Enterprise, 8 Sep 1938. Aged Settler, 83, Buried Wednesday. Came to Co in 1876. Dies at the Age of 83 Years. Mrs. Wiebke WULF, another of the early settlers of this Co, passed away Sunday, September 4, at the age of 83 years. She was born in Germany August 23, 1855 and when only twenty years of age came to this Co, landing here on March 28, 1876. Shortly after her arrival she was married to Detluf WULF, who had homesteaded in Lincoln township. Mr. WULF had made the trip back to Germany for the purpose of bringing her to the new country and thus on April 3, 1876 they were married by Rev. H. FRESE, father of Rev. H.C. Jul FRESE, present minister of the Blair German Lutheran church. The young couple immediately went farming and were happy in their efforts to build up a home on the prairie. About fifty years ago the husband died but the wife and their six children remained on the farm. She not only reared them all to maturity but managed in the meantime to buy and pay for another farm of 160 acres. Thirty years ago she retired from the farm and moved to Blair where her declining years were spent in peace and comfort. She was a good mother and a good neighbor and her friends were limited only by her circle of acquaintances for to know her was to respect her. She leaves in her immediate family three daughters, Mrs. Henry KUHR, Mrs. C.C. REEH, Mrs. William F. KUHR and two sons, Detluf and Fred all of Blair. One daughter, Mrs. Andrew G. JENSEN died four years ago. Also surviving her are sixteen grandchildren and thirty great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Methodist church with Rev. FRESE in charge and interment was made in the Blair cemetery.
Funeral Note: Blair Pilot-Tribune, 19 May 1949. Among those present from out of town for the funeral of Detlef WULF last Wednesday at First Lutheran Church were Adolf KRONBERG of Bloomfield, Mr. and Mrs. Chris PETERSEN, Fred JENSEN, Martin and Peter JENSEN, all of Winside, and Anton JENSEN of Bellevue.

Obituary. Blair Enterprise, 21 Aug 1941. (Lois's father) C.X. HANSEN Died Suddenly Last Friday. Teacher In Dana College For Forty-Four Years. Highly Honored. Three Times President. Professor C.X. HANSEN, highly respected citizen and beloved by all who knew him and a member of the faculty of Dana College since 1897, died suddenly at his home last Friday of a heart attack. Chris X. HANSEN was born on a farm near Lyons, Nebraska, November 8, 1869, the son of Niels and Marie HANSEN. Having shown early indications of aptitude for intellectual pursuits he became a member of the first student body at Trinity Seminary, Blair, Nebraska, during the school year 1887-1887. Later he entered Midland College, Atchison, Kansas, for a full Liberal Arts Course. Upon his graduation in 1897, he returned to Blair to enter upon his life work as instructor and administrator in Dana College, his own church school. In 1898 he was united in marriage with Miss Ida HULTBERG of Oakland, Nebraska. No less than three times was HANSEN called upon to assume administrative duties as executive head of Dana College and Trinity Seminary, these periods covering the years 1908-14, 1919-25, and 1936-38. His services to the cause of Christian education were recognized in 1921 by the conferring upon him of the degree of L.H.D. by his Alma Mater, Midland College, now located at Fremont, Nebraska. After recovery from a serious illness a few years ago, Dr. HANSEN was able to continue his work as head of the Department of Education at Dana College without interruption to the last. Death came to him suddenly on the afternoon of August 15 as the result of a heart attack. His age was 71 years, 9 months, and 7 days. Left to mourn their loss are the widow; two daughters, Mrs. E.E. GUSTIN and Mrs. Bernard WULF of Blair; five sons, Harold and Ernest of Omaha, Eliott of Camp Roberts, California. Winston of San Antonio, Texas; and Paul, present registrar of Dana College; also two brothers, Tom of Rosalie and Andrew of Lyons, Nebraska; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie HULTBERG of Blair, Mrs. Will PETERSEN of Bayard, Nebraska, and Mrs. Willard MOWRER of Pasadena, California as well as a host of devoted friends and former pupils within and without the United Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church throughout the land. The funeral services were held Monday at 2:30 p.m. from the home at which time Rev. Erhardt NIELSEN of Jacksonville, Iowa, assisted and at three o'clock at the First Lutheran Church in presence of between 400 and 500 people the services were continued with Rev. Harold C. JORGENSEN officiating. Brief talks were made by Rev. L. SIERSBECK, representing the college; Dr. J.P. NIELSEN, representing Trinity Seminary, and Dr. N. C. CARLSEN, representing the United Danish Lutheran Church. Others making talks were Dr. L.W. BOE, president of St. Olaf College; Dr. W.F. RANGIER, Midland College and Western Theological Seminary; Rev. Paul M. LINDBERG, president of Luther College of Wahoo, Nebraska; and Rev. H.W. BONDO of Albert Lea, Minnesota. Music was furnished by John W. LINK at the organ and Mrs. Paul NYHOLM of Blair and Robert HOGZETT of Emerson, Iowa, rendered several vocal solos. The choir of the First Lutheran Church of Blair and a quartet of ladies sang at the home and at the grave. The pall bearers were Dr. C.B. LARSEN and Rev. Paul NYHOLM of Trinity Seminary; Prof. H.F. SWANSEN and Prof. S.M. THOMSEN of the College; N.T. LUND of the board of trustees and Ed GILBERTSON, a neighbor for many years. During the funeral rites the business houses were closed in honor of the man whom all had learned to hold in the highest respect for his sincerity of purpose, his high plane of living and the example that he had set in the line of Christian duty. Burial was made in the Blair cemetery.

Funeral services were held Wednesday for Soren JENSEN, well known Washington Co farmer and Co Supervisor who died last Sunday in a hospital at Excelsior Springs, Missouri. He was 69 years of age. He was born May 27, 1889 on a farm near Kennard to the late J.B. JENSEN and his wife Anna. He grew to manhood in that vicinity. He was also a member of the Herman Masonic and Order of the Eastern Star lodges. Two weeks ago Mr. JENSEN accompanied his daughter and son-in-law, Howard KUBIE, to Kansas City, stopping off in Excelsior Springs to enjoy the mineral baths. Article, Blair Enterprise, 17 Feb
1966. Blair's "Mr. Centennial." Saturday, February 12,
was a big day for Mr. L.P. SKOV, of the Good Shepherd Home in
Blair. That was Mr. SKOV's 99th birthday. Mr. SKOV
isin
very good health. He can walk about his room, ride his wheel chair
down to the dining room each day for meals and take care of himself quite
well. With a big smile Mr. SKOV commented about his advancing
years by saying, "God treats me nicely. I know Him and He knows
me." He likes to watch television and still reads the newspapers,
magazines and books. Each morning he does all of the exercises he can
right along with "That TV fellow." His hand is steady enough
to write letters to his many friends in this country and his native
Denmark. He shook his head and admitted, "I have to look up some
of their names and addresses now. I just can't seem to remember all of
them." As the Enterprise photographer was ready to leave Mr. SKOV
said, "I'd like to have you come back next year to take my picture when
I'm 100." Our comment is that we will be more than happy to take
another picture next year. It is already marked down in the calendar
book. As far as this newspaper knows Mr. SKOV will be the only
person in Washington Co who will be 100 years old the same year as the
State of Nebraska. Mr. SKOV should be the honored citizen of
Washington Co during the Centennial year of 1967. Pictured above
Mr. SKOV looks over one of the many birthday cards he received on his
99th birthday. Mr. SKOV has three children still living in this
area. They are Mrs. Soren C. JENSEN of Blair, A.J. SKOV
of Blair and Iford SKOV of Alta, Iowa.

Obituary. Washington Co Pilot-Tribune & Enterprise, 21 Jul 2008. Howard F. KUBIE, 96. Washington Co native Howard F. KUBIE, 96, died Friday, July 18, 2008. Private family services were held July 21, 2008, at the Liewer Funeral Home in Imperial. Graveside services at the Cemetery will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 23. Howard F. KUBIE was born Feb. 26, 1912, on the family farm near Herman to Fred and Marie (BEHRENDT) KUBIE. He attended rural school through the 10th grade and attended Herman High School, graduating in 1929. During his high school years, a favorite pastime was baseball. After graduating, he played baseball in the Eastern Nebraska Baseball League, on the Herman team. He was an avid baseball fan throughout his life. In the 1930's in addition to working on the family farm, he worked for the government, measuring fields and selling government crop insurance when it first became available. In 1939, he married Leola JENSEN. They lived in Herman, where he was employed by the Tyson Company, a John Deere dealership. When World War II made it difficult for formers to get machinery, he moved his family west of Herman and took up farming again. In 1950, the family moved to Blair. He purchased a half-interest in the Tyson Company which, in addition to John Deere equipment, was a Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth dealership. During this time, he was the Co chairman for the ASC office, a position he held for nearly 20 years. In the 1960s, the dealership was sold, and Mr. KUBIE became the manager of the Tyson Grain Elevator. He retired in 1977, and he and his wife enjoyed many fishing trips and playing cards with friends. He took pleasure in political discussions, following the latest developments in farming, and keeping up with current events. Following his wife's death in 1995, he moved to Imperial to be near his daughter and her family. He enjoyed life at Imperial Heights, meeting new friends through afternoon pitch games in the dining room. He got great pleasure in keeping in touch with his friends and family in Blair by devotedly reading the Blair newspapers. He was a 50-year member of the United Methodist Church. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Lloyd HAZARD of Imperial; two granddaughters and their spouses; six great-grandchildren; sister, Esther HANSEN, and sister-in-law, Janet NELSON, both of Blair. Synopsis:
Injury Report. Blair Enterprise, 16 Jun 1938. Donald JENSEN Injures Hand. Donald JENSEN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris E. JENSEN so severely injured his had last Friday that twelve stitches were necessary. Donald, age 13, had been helping his father feed corn into a sheller from a truck. When the cord was shelled Donald was to lift the spout leading from the truck to the sheller and hold it up as his father drove the truck into the barn. Unfortunately Donald slipped as the truck began to move, catching his hand between the sheller and the truck. He hand was badly lacerated and the tendon of one of his fingers was cut, though not severed. The hand was dressed immediately at the Blair hospital and, if no further complications set in, Donald will soon be fully recovered. Donald seems to be having a run of bad luck lately. Late in April he was working in the field when a storm came up and he ran for a shed closing his eyes against the wind and the rain. For that reason he did not see that a piece of tin roofing had blown loose and was hanging across the doorway and he ran into it, badly cutting his face.

Debra THOMPSETT officiating. He was a former resident of Blair, and a sales rep for Rockmont Envelope Company. A World War II Navy veteran, he is survived by his wife Lois of Kimberling City, Missouri; two sons, Chris E. II of Wichita, Kansas, and Steven D. of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, one daughter, Ann M. JENSEN of Boulder, Colorado; one sister, Enid KEMPCKE of Blair, one grandchild. Memorial contributions may be made to the Congregational Church at Blair. Greenlawn Funeral Home of Springfield, Missouri, handled the arrangements.

Betty JENSEN remembers "Mick" Jensen as a member of Chris E.JENSEN's shelling crew. She remembers that he was the "cut-up" of the crew - always playing practical jokes and doing funny things while skillfully getting them blamed on everyone else in the crew. She never knew his real name was William Jennings Bryan!

Obituary. Baltimore Sun, 22
Jan 2001 by Heather DeWAR. Russell CHRISTENSEN, 73, Navy
veteran, teacher, law clerk, real estate manager. Russell E.
CHRISTENSEN, who began his working life as a teacher in a one-room
schoolhouse in South Dakota and ended it as a law clerk to one of Maryland's
most distinguished judges, died of lung cancer Wednesday at his Towson home.
He was 73. The native of Wynot, Neb., had a varied career. He
also had been a World War II Navy seaman, a real estate manager for Phillips
Petroleum Co. and an assistant to historic preservationists in Annapolis.
His wife, the former Nona KASTL said the couple's 51-year-marriage
began with an introduction worthy of a Spencer TRACY-Katherine
HEPBURN screwball comedy: In a freshman Engllish class at a small
Lutheran college in 1946, she hauled off and slugged him in the jaw.
"I had very long hair and it always fell over the back of my seat," Mrs.
CHRISTENSEN explained, "and the boys in the class were always trying to
tie an eraser or a pencil in my hair." One day, she felt a sharp tug
and looked down to discover that someone had cut off a large piece of her
hair. "I was so upset, I turned around and swung at the first person I
saw. It happened to be him," she said. As she hollered
accusations, the quiet Navy veteran said nothing -- the only one in the room
who kept his peace. "It got so rambunctious that the professor said,
'Class dismissed,'" she said. The next day, Mr. CHRISTENSEN's
younger brother confessed that he was the malefactor. "I felt it was
my duty to apologize to this guy, so I did," Mrs. CHRISTENSEN
recalled. "He said, 'I forgive you, but you have to buy me coffee
every morning for the rest of the semester.'" She did, and they were
married in 1949. That year, Mr. CHRISTENSEN transferred to the
University of South Dakota, graduating with a degree in education and modern
languages in 1950. His first teaching assignment was at a rural
one-room schoolhouse. He later became an English teacher and principal
at Centerville (S.D.) High School. In the late 1950's, Mr.
CHRISTENSEN went to work as a real estate manager for Phillips Petroleum
Co., negotiating the purchase of gas station sites for the growing company.
In 1961, he was transferred to Baltimore, where he scouted for station sites
throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. At the same time, Mr.
CHRISTENSEN studied at Mount Vernon School of Law, which later became
part of the University of Baltimore. After earning his law degree in the
late 1960's, he worked on land acquisition for the state of Maryland.
In 1973, he became assistant chief clerk for Judge Robert C. Sweeney, the
late chief judge of the District Court system and an architect of the
modernization of Maryland's court system. Mr. CHRISTENSEN
continued to use his real estate expertise on historic preservation
projects, his wife said. One of the transactions he worked on was the
transfer of Annapolis' Brice House, described as "the most beautiful house
in Colonial America," from a bankruptcy court proceeding to Historic
Annapolis, Inc. Mr. CHRISTENSEN was a skilled amateur
woodworker, who built scaled-down roll-top desks for his children and
exquisitely detailed doll furniture for his grandchildren. A funeral
service was held Saturday. In addition to his wife, he is survived by
a daughter, Lisa KELLY, and a son, Eric CHRISTENSEN, both of
Towson; two brothers, Cecil CHRISTENSEN of Davidson, Mich., and Gary
CHRISTENSEN of Sarasota, Fla; two sisters, Lorraine LINGERT of
Sarasota and Wanda DAVIS of Milton, Iowa; and five grandchildren.
Obituary. Blair Pilot-Tribune, 23 Apr 2002. Wilma KASTL, 100. Funeral services for Wilma KASTL, 100, of Herman, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at the Herman Community Church. Interment will be in the Herman Cemetery. Mrs. KASTL died Saturday, April 20, at the Tekamah Nursing Center. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home in Blair, with the family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wilma E. KASTL was born May 11, 1901, in rural Herman to William and Mary Alice (PACKWOOD) LOWE. She began her teaching career at age 17, and taught at Golden springs, Jefferson, Crawford, and Rose Hill schools for nine years, in and around the Herman and Decatur area. Following her marriage to Ray KASTL on Feb. 12, 1927, in Logan, Iowa, she stayed at home as a wife and mother to her children. During a teacher shortage in 1944, Mrs. KASTL went back to the classroom and continued teaching in Vacoma, Broderson, Herman public and New England Schools until 1960. She stayed in her home until 1999, when she moved into the Tekamah Nursing and Rehab Center. Mrs. KASTL's daughter noted that, "in the last 100 years, Wilma has seen the advent of electric lights, telephone, radio, automobiles, air transportation, washing machines, electric irons and stove, indoor plumbing, hot water in general use, space exploration, computers, TVs, VCRs, two World Wars, and three other military involvements." She is survived by her daughter, Nona CHRISTENSEN of Baltimore, Md., two grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, Son, Ray "Bas" Jr.; four brothers; and one sister. Memorials are suggested to the Herman Legion Auxiliary, Herman Community Church, or St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church scholarship fund. Campbell-Aman Funeral Home in Blair is in charge of arrangements.
In the Herman Cemetery, there is a sheltered bulletin-board/notice center that posts, among other things, a map of the cemetery. The redwood shelter has a plaque with the following inscription: Erected May 1980 in Memory of Raymond Mantel KASTL By His Loving Wife, Children, Son-in-Law and Grandchildren: Wilma, Raymond, Nona, Russell, Lisa, Eric.
Court Case. In 2001-2006. Nona K. CHRISTENSEN. Baltimore, MD. In the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. Nona K. CHRISTENSEN v. Phillip Morris, Inc., et. al. Civil No. CCB-01-3117. This compiler has been unable to identify a final outcome in the case. The case was, at one point, decided in favor of Giant Foods, a distributor of the cigarettes causing Russell CHRISTENSEN's cancer. Subsequently, that decision was vacated and the case was remanded to the Circuit Court. And there it seems to have ended. I can find no subsequent decisions in the case.

We visited the cemetery in June 2015 and located the grave site in Section I,
Grave 5. Graves in
the memorial parks in California are flat and set into the turf.
Left unattended, continued mowing eventually buries the stone and the grass
covers it. That is what has happened to Mabel's stone, which
is no longer visible. Frankly, this "gravehunter" hates these memorial
parks. Perpetual care does not exist - if family doesn't "dog the park"
stones just simply disappear. We left the cemetery exhausted, frustrated
and more than a little angry.

Visited the cemetery in Jun 2015. The cemetery
had been neglected for years and was about one year into reconstruction.
Being a memorial park, all
the tombstones were flat to the ground and had been
overgrown with grass. The new owners were systematically trying to uncover
the stones, but had
not yet made it to the section where Harold, and
potentially Esther Marie, are buried. Thus, no tombstones could be found.
Location of Harold's grave
came from office records. Esther Marie was not
listed but that proves nothing either way, given the state of their records.

BROKAW SCHENCK was born Jan. 12, 1836 near Somerville, Somerset Co, N.J., and departed this life at her home near Craig, Nebr., Nov. 28, 1912, aged 76 years, 10 months and 16 days. She was united in holy matrimony July 23, 1854, to Robert H. SCHENCK and to this union was born eleven children, five boys and six girls. After six years sojourn in N.J., they moved to Iowa, where they lived for twelve years, after which they moved to Washington Co, Nebr., where she has lived until Death called her to the better home above. She united with the Presbyterian church very early in life and has remained a faithful member of said church until her departure, and as one said to the writer, "It was only a step across for this dear old mother." She spent many hours in the meditation of God's word, and in all her meditations her heart always rested much upon the 15th chapter of St. John's Gospel. She is survived by three brothers and three sisters, these with five sons, four daughters and a host of friends are left to mourn the loss of a dear mother, sister, And friend. The children are: Mrs. S.J. GATES, Craig, Nebr; Mrs. O.A. McMULLEN, Paoma, Colo; Mr. Garrett SCHENCK, Calif; Mrs. S.R. BROWN, Beaver City, Nebr; Mr. W.H. SCHENCK, Trenton, Wash; Mr. A.D. SCHENCK, Ponca, Nebr; Elmer of Newcastle, Nebr; Mrs. F.A. GOSSARD of Saskathewan, Canada, and J.R. SCHENCK of Herman, Nebr. The funeral was held from the First Presbyterian church of Craig, Nebr., with Rev. J.W. HENDERSON of the M.E. church, officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery of Craig, Neb. "A precious one from us has gone. A voice we loved is stilled; A place is vacant in our home, Which never can be filled. God in His wisdom has recalled The boon His love had given; And though the body moulders here, The soul is safe in Heaven."
Robert J. SCHENCK was a widower when he married Esther Marie JENSEN. He was a butcher, by trade.
Robert was residing at Osceola, Polk Co, NE at the time of his marriage.
Obituary. Blair Newspaper, Feb 1944. Robert J. SCHENCK Rites Held Monday. Robert J. SCHENCK, a resident of Blair since 1935, passed away in an Omaha hospital, on January 28, 1944, following a lingering illness. At his death he was 57 years, 5 months and 6 days old. He was born August 22, 1876, at Admah, in the northwest portion of the Co. He was first married to Miss Gertie GROSVENER, something like thirty three years ago, and four children were born to them. Deceased operated a garage in Herman for fifteen years. During this period his wife preceded him in death, and on March 4, 1926 he married Miss Esther JENSEN, of Herman. Later the family moved to Osceola, Nebraska where Mr. SCHENCK operated a meat market for a time. He sold the market and purchased another at Stanton, Iowa, where he moved his family and where he continued in business for nine years, when his health failed him and he purchased a home in Blair where he resided until his death. Two sons, Kenneth and Donald managed the business until two years ago, when Donald entered the U.S. Marine Air Corps, leaving his brother to carry on the business. Besides the wife he leaves his sons, already mentioned, and two daughters and a number of grandchildren. He also leaves two brothers, one of Alberta, Canada, and one of Balaton, Minnesota, and a sister of Van Nuys, California. The funeral rites were held in the Baptist Church, in Blair on Monday, and a large number of out-of-town relatives and friends gathered to do him honor. Herman friends were especially prominent in the audience. Interment was made at Craig, Nebraska.
