[NOTE: For consistency, this compiler spells the name WALTEMYER. The name is variously spelled: Waltemeyer, Waltemire, Waltmeyer, Waltmyer, Waltmire, Watermeyer, Watermyer, Watermire, Wattermeyer, Wattermire, Wattermyer, WALTEMYER, WALTEMYER, Waldmeyer, Waldmyer, Waldemeyer, Waldemyer, Waldemire, Haltemeyer, Haltermeyer, Haltemyer, Haltermyer and at least 30 other variations on those themes. Readers aMnd researchers should not be put off by these variations or think that a particular variation means that a family is not related because of that variation. It just makes it difficult to use indexes because you have to look at so many different spellings. The same holds for Johann/Johan/John, George/Georg, Frederick/Friedrich, Ludwig/Ludwick/Lewis, Orwig/Orwick, Dennis/Denius and on and on. Happy researching!!!]

Frank G. WALTERMIRE of 1811 Bradmore Drive, Houston, TX 77077 wrote a letter to a Mr. WALTERMIRE with a list of questions. He states that the reason for his great interest is "a silk and linen table cloth bearing a coat of arms which has been passed down to me through eight generations. It has been inherited by either the oldest or youngest WALTERMIRE son, who had a son. The cloth is dated "1746" in each of its four corners. In its center appears a royal coat of arms which belonged to Augustus III of Saxony, Germany. The capital of Saxony is now Dresden. The cloth was brought to the United States by Ludewigh WALTERMIRE (the name is spelled ten or more different ways). Ludewigh and his two sons, George and David, emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1752. They embarked from Rotterdam and sailed aboard the Phoenix. I have variously heard that the family came from Baden, Dresden or from Bischweiler, Alsace (now part of France). My branch of the family originally settled near York, Pennsylvania. Another branch of the family settled near Albany."
Letter dated July 27, 1992 from Frank G. WALTERMIRE: Dr. Joachim Menzhausen or Mrs. Herta Reichel. The Green Vault, Albertinium Museum, Dresden, Federal Republic of Germany. Dear Dr. Menzhausen or Mrs. Reichel: Some years ago I read an article entitled "Treasures of Dresden" by John L. Eliot in the November, 1978 edition of National Geographic magazine. I have been preparing a genealogy of my family and am curious about a linen or silk cloth that has passed down to me through seven generations. A photograph of this cloth is enclosed. Although you cannot see it in the photo the cloth is dated "1746." This cloth was brought to the United States on November 2, 1752 by my 5th great-grandfather, Johannes Ludewigh WALTEMYER. He arrived on the ship Phoenix at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from Rotterdam. Ludewigh arrived with his two sons, Johannes George WALTEMYER and Davit WALTEMYER. Ludewigh's wife died on board the ship. The cloth has survived the Revolution against England, fire, floods, the American Civil War and Indians. it is in very good condition considering its age and many owners. I believe the history of the cloth would make an extremely interesting story, one which I would like to write. Sometime around 1925 a photograph of the cloth was examined in New York. I understand from older relatives that the coat-of-arms is actually the union of two coats-of-arms. on one side is the arms of the Kingdom of Poland (white eagle) quartering those of the Duchy of Lithuania (horseman) and on the other the arms of the Elector of Saxony impaling those of the Archmarshalship of the Empire. I believe the sacrificial lamb is the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, an order of knighthood in Austria and Spain, which was founded in January 10, 1430 at Burges by Philip the Good, Duke of Bergundy and sovereign of the Netherlands. I have no information concerning the eagle in the star. I know from Mr. Eliot's article that Augustus II was Elector fo Saxony and King of Poland. he died, however, in 1733, thirteen years before the date of the cloth. Is it possible that this cloth was made for Augustus III? I believe the key to the cloth, it's weaving and intended ownership lies in Germany. Any information you could provide me concerning the owner of the coat-of-arms would be deeply appreciated. If it appears that this cloth has its origin in the Duchy of Saxony, I would also be very pleased if you would provide the name and address of a person I might retain to research the genealogy of the WALTEMYER family in Germany. Please pardon the fact that this leter is not in German. My family quit speaking that language in 1805 and I do not have ready access to a translator. Sincerely, /s/ Frank G. WALTERMIRE. December 1983, The WALTEMYER Family, compiled by Betty Haines BROWN for my Daughter-in-Law, Roxanne FISHER HAINES: Ludwig WALTEMYER. Ludwig WALTEMYER arrived November 2, 1752 at Philadelphia on the ship "Phoenix," John Spurrier, Commander. The ship sailed from Rotterdam, last from Portsmouth, England. See enclosed copy of the passenger list. Most German emigrants traveled down the Rhine River to Rotterdam, Holland to board a ship for America. The ship usually stopped at a port in England before sailing for America. The names of Johan George and David WALTEMYER are also listed on the passenger list. Johan George and David were sons of Ludwig. The WALTEMYER Family file at the Historical Society of York CoLibrary contains a copy of part of a letter written by a great grandson of Ludwig's, Samuel WALTEMYER of Muskingum County, Ohio, it relates the following about his ancestors: April 15, 1891. I (Samuel) was born May 10, 1803, at or near what was then known as Little York (now York) in York County, Pennsylvania, and I am a son of Michael and Margaret MUSSER WALTEMYER of Muskingum County, Ohio. George WALTEMYER, my grandfather and his father came to America from Germany when George was about 16 years of age. His mother died at sea while they were coming across the ocean, and his father married in America but I do not know to whom. My grandfather lived for a time about three miles from Little York from whence he moved on land near Zanesville, in Muskingum County, Ohio and died there before the war of 1812. The letter continues giving descendants of Samuel. On June 12, 1753 Ludwig married Sophia Dorothea NAGLIN at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The marriage is recorded as follows, Ludwig WALDENMAJER, widower and Sophia Dorothea NAGLIN, single married June 12, 1753 by Pastor GEROCK. The record lists the residence of Ludwig in Germany as Sulzbach on the Kocher (Kocher River) which is located in Baden where many of the early immigrants originally came from. Ludwig's will was probated January 14, 1783 and is recorded at the York CoCourt House (see enclosed copy) in will book F, page 77, his wife Anna Margaret is mentioned. It appears that Ludwig married three times, it is my theory that Sophia Dorothea died sometime after 1774. A record of her death could not be found. It is possible Ludwig did not remain in Lancaster Covery long, he probably crossed the Susquehanna soon after his marriage to Sophia Dorothea and settled in York County. A marriage for a Catharine WALTENMAJER is recorded at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster. It is recorded as follows, Martin SCHITTENHELM and Catharine WALTENMAJER, single, married April 20, 1762. Martin's residence is given as Bezweyler, Germany. I suspect that Catharine may have been a daughter of Ludwig and his first wife. Passenger lists sometimes list the names of men, women, and children, the Phoenix listed only the men. In my search I found the WALTEMYER spelled various ways, this is not unusual. Many early immigrants could not read or write, the English were in charge of the new country and often wrote the German name the way it sounded. Note Ludwig, Johan George and David WALTEMYER's name is spelled HALTEMEYER on the passenger list, they made their mark, they could not write, probably the English agent wrote their name or another passenger on the ship wrote the name. Those who could not read or write often depended on the local pastor and school teacher to read and write for them, thus one finds various spellings of names.

The Andrew RALSTON Annals: Boulder Number. Volume 1, 30 Jul 1934. The Big Day this year is Saturday, August 18, at Beech Spring Presbyterian Church, two miles South of Hopedale, Ohio. We held the first reunion there in 1930; the second one at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church two miles South of Bloomingdale, Ohio, and five miles East of Beech Spring, in 1931; the third one at the old homestead on the Harry Ralston CRABB farm at Bloomingdale (called Bloomfield in pioneer days) in 9132; and the fourth one at Shell Rock, Iowa, last year on George ADAIR's farm, close to the town which George Washington ADAIR and William ADAIR laid out in 1853. This year we return to Beech Spring for the special purpose of dedicating a boulder-marker at the line of the six graves in that historic churchyard. Your historian is receiving so many letters, and some of you have been rather forgetful of your fine opportunity to participate in this highly patriotic occasion that it has seemed best to publish this additional issue of the Annals so that a burdensome letter-writing might be avoided just at this busy time. In the doing of the things that are here recorded your historian has had the hearty approval and co-operation of the members of the Executive Committee. We, therefore, call it "Boulder Number", and ask you to follow the story through. WHERE WE GOT THE BOULDER. Our forbear, Sophia WALTEMYER RALSTON, heroic and pioneering wife of Andrew RALSTON, was the daughter of David WALTEMYER. Ludwig (Lewis) WALTEMYER, the pioneer, resided in the town of York, Pennsylvania, and had the distinction of guarding Hessian soldiers in Camp Security in 1777, at the age of 77. His one son, Phillip WALTEMYER, was a carpenter, and remained in York. Another son, George WALTEMYER, went into the Southern part of York Coand engaged in farming and is the forbear of the two groups, one in York Coand the other in central Ohio. Our forbear, a third son, David WALTEMYER, went into the South Mountain section of York Coto the North, just West of York Springs, and settled in the edge of Cumberland County. This particular section became a part of Adams Coin 1800. We do not know, but we assume, that Andrew RALSTON, and Sophia WALTEMYER were married possibly on the tract of land just at the edge of Cumberland County, for which David WALTEMYER took out a patent. There seem to have been but three children in David WALTEMYER's family, as he died in 1790, to wit: Sophia, Mary, who married Carson MOORE, and Lewis. Eve WALTEMYER, David's widow, lived on the property until her death at 95 years in 1825. Lewis WALTEMYER married Agness MOORE but had no issue. Lewis WALTEMYER, II, died in 1838, and the records show that his widow, Agness lived on the property until as late as 1848, and it was then assessed to Ludwig WALTEMYER heirs, and then transferred to Carson C. MOORE. By later transfers and a mortgage foreclosure during these depression days the title is now in the First National Bank at Gettysburg. A deed at Carlisle shows Lewis WALTEMYER and his wife, Agness, joining in a deed for two tracts of 584 acres and 220 acres, which was adjoining the David WALTMYER property. An old stone house and stone barn are still standing in fair state of preservation on the property. A fine new Pinchot state road of amiesite bisects the property and was opened for use on July 1, 1934. Your historian had three legal trips to Harrisburg this winter and on each occasion detoured to this old WALTMEYR property. The stone buildings contain alternately three types of stone; a greenish, granite; a white quartz; and a mottled mixture of these two. The first was selected as the type of stone to be more enduring, as the second would cleave and possibly crumble in time. The little highway bridges and orchard fences are built of these mixtures of stone, and the boulder which was transported was secured just at the edge of a 91 acre apple orchard in the apple section of Adams County. In the verification of these facts we have been greatly aided by Mr. Uriah T. GARDNER, of Uriah, penn'a., a post office called for him who is now in his 84th year. He tells how his mother was raised by the WALTEMYERs, and he will in the near future point out the old WALTEMYER graves in Ground Oak Lutheran Cemetery near Idaville, Pa. TRANSPORTING THE BOULDER. The boulder party was made up of Gene and Leonard AGOSTINO, owners of the truck, Paul R. WALKINSHAW and this writer. Going down the Lincoln Highway, over the high Pennsylvania mountains, on the afternoons of July 2, we arrived at Caledonia Furnace, West of Gettysburg, for the night. Arising at 5 A.M., we drove to Gettysburg and toured the battlefield, secured our breakfast at 6:45 in a Gettysburg restaurant, talked to Dr. William C. WALTEMYER, Gettysburg College Professor, who is a descendant of Ludwig and George WALTEMYER, and proceeded North to York Springs. There we picked up C. Donald LaRUE, a fine historical scout, who located the tract and the boulder for us originally. Proceeding three miles West to the WALTEMYER plantation. It took five of us, with bars, rollers and planks to get it to the last two heaves onto the truck. The truck was directly across the road, backed up to a bank. A new Ford V8 came along, and we promised to remove the obstruction to the highway, if they would help us heave. The seven of us then landed the boulder on the truck without difficulty, the road was cleared, and we started home at 11:30 A.M. through historic Carlisle, where President George WASHINGTON was in charge of over 9000 soldiers at the time of the Whisky Insurrection. A detour near Newport sent us through Duncannon, which took the boulder along the banks of the Susquehanna and up the blue Juniata from its mouth to the foot of the Allegheny Mountains, along Route 22. After an all-night rest we were on our way again on July 4th, stopping at the Block House in Pittsburgh, a part of old Ft. Pitt and thence on to Steubenville and Hopedale. Just at the West Virginia line, we invited William Scott RALSTON, of the Joseph RALSTON collateral family, to accompany us and he enjoyed greatly the remainder of the trip through Steubenville to Beech Spring. he promises a good attendance of the Joseph RALSTONs at the reunion. Once at Beech Spring that good friend and adopted RALSTON, J. Elmer EAGLESON, supervised the unloading. The boulder was transported in one-tenth or one-fifteenth of the time it took Andrew RALSTON and his family to make the trip to their new home by earlier means of transportation. This historically representative stone was put on end in a base of concrete on July 19th, and the bronze marker will be placed upon it soon, but in time for the reunion. It is being manufactured by Newman Brothers, Inc., of Cincinnati, Ohio, who are specialists along this line. The work of chiseling, excavating and concreting was done by Mr. R.L. JENKINS, and Mr. E.E. CHIVERS of Cadiz, Ohio, under the supervision of Mr. EAGLESON. YOUR PART. Up to the time of the transportation of the boulder, the aggregate of the Marker Fund was $63.91, which was contributed by 109 RALSTONS, ranging in age from octogenarians to the very youngest of the clan. The actual cost of transportation thus far has been $66.00, and the manufacturers have contracted for the furnishing of the plate for $40.00, F.O.B. Cincinnati. At this writing the cost of erection and materials at Beech Spring cannot be estimated, but it will be reasonable. So you see there is not a sufficient fund on hand to complete the task before the reunion. Those who have already contributed are not amenable to this appeal, but it is for those who have forgotten about Dr. Cora RALSTON's plan of one cent for every year of their age. You just didn't mean to forget it, but you did. Now is the time to send it one, and you will have the great joy of having contributed your part to the undertaking. On the morning of July 4th, as we hauled the boulder through Greensburg, Westward, the mall contained three letters containing an aggregate of $10.45, contributed by 26 RALSTONs of the Andrew RALSTON II, and the Lewis Waltemyer RALSTON families. 135 contributors have now given a total of $74.36. The marker will contain 160 words, giving the military record, and names of the others who lie beside the ancestor, the dates of their birth and death, and the legend as to the transportation and the dedication. You have the story. Perk up your RALSTON patriotic pride, and send in your contribution, so that we may dedicate the marker with the feeling of patriotic duty well performed. Any balance left over will be used towards the publication of this issue of the Annals which goes out to between 600 and 700 families.

Synopsis:
Jacob was baptized 22 Apr 1805
Mary Magdalena came directly from Germany. Her father was a waver by trade. There were 4 children; she was the eldest and was 9 years old when she came to America. Two younger sisters died and were buried at sea on the voyage to America. Her parents and her brother survived, along with Mary. Her parents died shortly after they arrived in America. They had a small bag of gold, with which they were going to start a business; but, when they reached their destination in Baltimore and requested their gold from the ship's Captain, it had disappeared. Mary was hired out to a family near Baltimore and was so badly treated that she left and walked to Shrewsbury, York Co, PA and was hired in a home there. She then met and married Jacob WALTEMYER. Synopsis:
James A WALTEMYER managed the funeral arrangements for his father, Adam, according to the death certificate.
Adam may have served in the Civil War.
Catharine died at the home of her son, George ORWIG and was buried at St. John's Saddler's Cemetery with her first husband, Levi ORWIG.
Catharine sold her farm to her son, Simon ORWIG, on 3 Mar 1909, for $892.00 (York Co Court House, Book 16M, p. 43).
In the 1910 Census, Catharine is listed as living next door to Simon in a small, rented house.
The compiler of the WALTEMYER booklet in the York CoHistorical Archives, noted the following: There are discrepancies in the ages of the ORWIG and WALTEMYER children in the census records. This is not unusual [this compiler heartily agrees], sometimes the parents became confused, or the census taker was mistaken. Birth records were not available at the York CoHistorical Society and it is not known which church may have the birth records of the children. The records may not be available, sometimes church records are mislaid or lost. Thus, I had to rely on the census and cemetery records. Birth records were not recorded by the state of Pennsylvania until 1906, prior to that time one must search church records or whatever sources are available. The York CoHistorical Society has a vast amount of Vital Records available, however, they are not complete. In the 1880 and 1900 (1890 is not available) census Adam is not listed as living with Catharine.

Synopsis:
The Gazette & Daily, York, PA., Saturday Morning, November 3, 1928. LOWER END FARMER STRANGELY KILLED. WM. WALTEMYER BELIEVED TO HAVE FALLEN FROM MULE, BUT CORONER IS INVESTIGATING. HEARS RUMORS OF FEUD. William WALTEMYER, 52 years old, of Laurel R.D., was found dead in a road about two miles east of Collinsville at 7:10 o'clock last evening, presumably having been fatally injured in a fall from a mule. Unusual circumstances surrounding the man's death, however, coupled with a rumor of a feud in this section of the county, have led Coroner L.U. ZECH to institute an investigation. The body of Mr. WALTEMYER, lying in a pool of blood about three-quarters of a mile from his home, was found by Harry K. LEIPHART, Laurel R.D. 2, who came along in his automobile, which also contained his wife, Lawrence LEIPHART and Mrs. Roy SHELLY. LEIPHART communicated with teh authorities and Coroner ZECH went to the scene to investigate. Investigation established the fact that Mr. WALTEMYER, whose farm was located a mile east of Collinsville, had been to Clarence TROUT's sawmill at Goram in the afternoon. He left for home and was seen at a store along the way, riding a mule. The mule, with saddle and bridle still in place, returned home after it had lost its rider. Mr. LEIPHART, who passed the animal not far fromt eh place where WALTEMYER's body was found, said that it was walking calmly along, showing no signs of having run away, or being fractious. Unusual Position of Body. The position in which the body was lying when found puzzled authorities. The body was lying on the west side of the road, the head toward the south and the feet pointing northward. It was pointed out that had the man fallen from the mule's back, the position of the body would likely been reversed. And, although the man's left leg was broken, indicated that it might have caught in the stirrup, that was no evidence that the body had been dragged. There is no support for the body would have been dragged along by the foot in the stirrup, and would have been left lying with the feet pointing in the direction the mule was going. Such was not the case; the body being found just reversed. Members of the WALTEMYER family and neighbors, were reluctant to believe that death was purely accidental. It was said that Mr. WALTEMYER some time ago had had a dispute with a man living not far away over the hauling of logs. Threats of violence had been heard, neighbors declared. On the basis of this, Coroner ZECH decided to thoroughly probe the case. Post Mortem Likely. The exact injury which caused death has not been ascertained, and it is likely a post mortem may be held. The man had bled copiously from the nose and ears, but there were no severe external injuries. A fractured skull, or a broken neck, it was believed, had caused death, but it will require a more thorough examination of the body to definitely determine this. The theory was also advanced that the man might have had a stroke, fallen off the mule, and died of hemorrahages [sic]. Mr. WALTEMYER was a heavy man, weighing probably 180 pounds. There was no evidence that he had been drinking. Coroner L.U. ZECH announced that he would take up the case with District Attorney Amos W. HERRMANN this morning, and that, if so advised would conduct an autopsy today. The body has been removed to the establishment of Zarfos and Burg, at Red Lion, to be prepared for burial. Mr. WALTEMYER is survived by his wife, Agnes, and fifteen children as follows: Clara, Stewartstown; Elizabeth, wife of Welby FORRY, Laurel; Paul and Jacob, Red Lion; Roland, Laurel; Clayton, Harry, Daniel, James, Myrtle, Thomas, Welby, Earl and Spurgeon, all at home. One brother, James, and a sister, Mrs. Sallie ZIEGLER, Stewartstown, also survive.
The Gazette and Daily, York, PA., Monday Morning, November 5, 1928. CORONER PROBING WALTEMYER DEATH. NOT SATISFIED THAT FARMER WAS KILLED BY FALL FROM MULE. THREATS AGAINST HIM? Coroner L.U. ZECH announced yesterday that he would conduct an inquest into the death of William WALTEMYER, 52, Laurel R.D., whose body was found Friday evening lying on a lonely country road in Chanceford Twp not far from Collinsville. While outward indications were that the man had been fatally hurt in falling off a mule, the coroner said he felt that suspicious circumstances surrounding the case justified a thorough probe. A jury will be empanelled today and the members sworn in. The inquest will likely be held the latter part of the week. At the time the man's body was found, members of the WALTEMYER family mentioned a feud between him and a neighbor. It was said that there had been threats against his life. When Coroner ZECH notified District Attorney Amos W. HERRMANN of the case, Mr. HERRMANN recalled a complaint that was lodged with him by WALTEMYER himself. Threatened By Neighbor. It was reported by WALTEMYER that a neighbor threatened to kill him "at the first opportunity." The man who is alleged to have made the threat is an alleged bootlegger, who has been before the court and since then has similar violations of the law. Dr. ZECH instructed Dr. C.E. McGUIGAN to perform a post mortem on the dead man's body, and this revealed that WALTEMYER had a fracture at the base of the skull. The injury was not evident and probably would not have been found but for the autopsy. The district attorney was informed of the injury which caused the man's death and instructed Constable Ralph W. KEECH to conduct and complete a thorough investigation. The body was removed yesterday from the Zarfos and Burg funeral home at Red Lion, where it had been prepared for burial, to the WALTEMYER residence. The funeral will be held this morning at 9:30 o'clock, with brief services at the house and further services at Sadler's church, near Shrewsbury. Interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church.
The Gazette & Daily, York, PA., Monday Morning, November 5, 1928. ZECH NAMES JURY FOR WALTEMYER INQUEST; FUNERAL SERVICES HELD. Coroner L.U. ZECH yesterday named the jury to conduct an inquest into the death of William WALTEMYER, who was found dead Friday evening on a road near Collinsville. Members of the coroner's jury are: Charles F. ZARFOS, Red Lion; E.M. RUNKLE, Curvin MILLER, Elisha RIALE and H.A. RUNKLE, all of Laurel R.D. 2, and Howard SMELTZER, High Rock. The funeral of Mr. WALTEMYER was held yesterday morning at 9:30 o'clock, from his late residence, Laurel R.D. 2. Following brief services at the house, the funeral cortege proceeded to Sadler's church, near Shrewsbury, where concluding services were held. Rev. G.D. LAIRD, Lutheran clergyman of Felton, officiated. Interment was made in the cemetery at Sadler's church. The pallbearers were Harry LEIPHART, Charles McKINLEY, Albert EVELER, Clarence TROUT, William FLAHARTY and Harry RUNKLE. Two hymns, "Rock of Ages", and "Will Never Say Good-bye", were sung by the church choir. The funeral was in charge of Funeral Director Earl B. BURG, of the firm of Zarfos and Burg, Red Lion.
The Gazette & Daily, York, PA., Friday Morning, November 23, 1928. WALTEMYER DEATH WAS ACCIDENTAL. FOUL PLAY THEORY FAILS TO RECEIVE SUPPORT BEFORE CORONER'S INQUEST. NO FEUD MENTIONED. Although Coroner L.U. ZECH had been urged by a number of residents of the lower end of the Coto investigate the death, on November 2, of William T. WALTEMYER, of Laurel, R.D., last night at an inquest conducted in the grand jury room of the Cocourt house no reference to an alleged feud or threats made against the man were referred to whatsoever. Coroner ZECH's jury decided that WALTEMYER came to his death "from a fracture of the skull, as shown by a post mortem examination. According to evidence, it was evidently accidental. The exact manner of the accident is unknown to the jury at this time." The jury, composed of Charles F. ZARFOSS, Erastus M. RUNKLE, Curvin MILLER, Elisha RIALE, Harvey A. RUNKLE and Howard SMELTZER, had few facts upon which to determine their verdict. The testimony of Dr. C.E. McGUIGAN, the physician who performed the autopsy, was by far the most important. He said that the man had an abrasion above his eye and a lump on the back of his head. There was a large fracture of the skull and the swelling of the lump was evidence that WALTEMYER lived several minutes after his fatal mishap. Evidence of Dragging. WALTEMYER was found dead along a road about two miles east of Collinsville at about 7:10 o'clock on the night of Friday, November 2. A mule, which he as riding to his home from a saw mille operated by Clarence TROUT, at Goram, continued on its way home after the fatal accident. There was evidence that the man was dragged a distance of about six feet. His head was facing in the direction of his home. This aroused much suspicion. It is believed that the man moved during his consciousness the several minutes following his fall. Dr. McGUIGAN advanced the opinion that WALTEMYER fell upon a rock, his foot remained in one of the stirrups and finally when he did become free, the mule stepped upon the back of his head. That the bump was not discolored in evidence that WALTEMYER did not live more than several minutes after sustaining his injury. No Runaway Accident. Harry K. LEIPHART, his wife and Mrs. Roy SHELLY, all of Laurel, R.D.2, who were on their way to church on the evening of the second, and discovered the body lying in the road, gave similar stories last night. All saw the mule traveling toward the WALTEMYER home walking "very gentle." Mr. LEIPHART testified that there was evidence of the body being dragged. There were no shoes on the mule, he said. Clarence TROUT, at whose saw mill the man visited just prior to his death, testified that WALTEMYER was visibly under the influence of liquor. he, however, had complete control of the mule, TROUT said. he did not know of the man's death until the following morning. Curvin FLAHARTY and Milton FLAHARTY, brother, who passed the man on teh road a mile from the scene of the accident, claimed he appeared sober and gave them plenty of room to pass. The FLAHARTYs were in an automobile. The mule, at that time, was walking along very gently. Lester KRUSSEN, Laurel R.D. 2, saw the body of the man after death occurred. His actions prior to the death were questioned and the jury was satisfied that he knew nothing of the mishap.

Synopsis:
Johan Michael WALTEMYER was baptized: 20 May 1773.
Michael and Margaret moved to Fultonham Twp., Muskingum Co, OH before the War of 1812. Margaret died there, near Zanesville, and Michael married, 20 Dec 1811, Elizazbeth EDGELL.
Letter from Samuel WALTEMYER dated 15 Apr 1891: I was born May 10th, 1803, at or near what was then known as Little York, (now York) in York Co., Pennsylvania and am a son of Michael and Margaret MUSSER WALTERMIRE of Muskingum Co, OH. George WALTERMIRE, my grandfather, and his father came to America from Germany when George was about 16 years old. His mother died at sea while they were coming across the ocean, and his father married again in American but I do not know whom. My grandfather lived for a time about 3 miles from Little York from whence he moved on land near Zanesville, in Muskingum Co. Ohio, and died there a little before the War of 1812. His wife, (my grandmother) went back to York Cosoon after his death and died in about two weeks after arriving there. i do not know her maiden name. There were four sons of whom I remember.... My father, Michael WALTERMIRE, married Margaret MUSSER in Pennsylvania, some time before removing to Muskingum Co., Ohio. The children by the marriage were Jacob, George, Betsey (who married Thomas CASTEEL), Polly, myself (Samuel), John (died in inf), and Katie, the youngest child. My mother died in Muskingum Co., a short time before the war of 1812. My father after the death of my mother, married Elizabeth EDGELL. Previous to my father's second marriage, we talked the German language only, but as my stepmother could talk no German, we subsequently talked English only, and I forgot the German language.... I bought my first land in Morrow Co., Ohio from the government on Friday, Apr. 3, 1826 or 1827. It was Virginia school land...I lived on that farm until the close of the Civil War, when I sold my farm and removed here, and am now living with my daughter and her husband in Wyandott Co., Ohio, near the town of Forest. Signed, Samuel WALTERMIRE.
Margaret Clymer's father was a Methodist minister. He was a brother to George CLYMER's father who signed the Declaration of Independence.

1850 Census for Newton, Muskingum Co, OH, Family 1570: Michael WALTEMIRE, 76, Polly, 40, John, 22, Catharine, 3. This is likely the correct Michael but I can't figure out who is living with him at this point. Polly is probably Mary and they are all listed with the last name WALTEMIRE. I just don't know who they are.

Biographical Sketches, pp709-710. Gideon KAUFMAN, farmer; P.O., Marengo; is the son of Christian and Christina (GROVES) KAUFMAN; his father was born in Virginia in 1780, and his mother was born in 1786, in the same State. They came to Ohio in 1807, having married prior to their emigration. They settled in Fairfield Co., where his father engaged in farming and the ministry; the latter he followed for over sixty years in the service of the Old School Baptist denomination. They moved to what is now Morrow Co., in 1834, and settled on the farm now owned by Gideon; here the mother died. They had nine children - Anna, Esther, Joel, Rebecca, Gideon, Rachel, Frances, Joshua, infant deceased. The father was again married, to Sarah A. BIGGS, then moved to Oxford tp., Delaware Co., and there died Nov. 14, 1874; the step-mother died April 3, 1875. Mr. KAUFMAN was born Sept. 17, 1818, in Fairfield Co; his younger days were spent in attending school and working on a farm. He was married Dec. 9, 1845, to Margaret, daughter of Jacob and Mary (EDGET) WALTERMIRE. Her father was a native of Pennsylvania, and her mother of Delaware, and he moved into Muskingum Co., this State, and came to what is now Franklin Tp., in 1826, and finally made their permanent home in Harmony; the mother died in 1834; by her marriage with Mr. WALTERMIRE there were six children, but three survive - Margaret, Michael and Franklin. The father was subsequently married to Catharine LONG, and with her moved to Hancock Co., where he died about the year 1855, leaving to her seven children, five of whom survive, Mary, Elizabeth, Martha, William and John. The father and last wife were Old School Baptists, and the first wife was a Methodist. Mrs. KAUFMAN was born Feb. 18, 1828, in what is now Morrow Co. She and her husband settled in a log cabin on his father's farm. By strict economy they have increased their means, and now rank among the well-to-do farmers of the county. They have obtained what they possess by their own exertions except $1,000. He has served with credit in the Twp offices. He votes the Democratic ticket, and has represented that party in Senatorial conventions. His wife is a member of the Baptist Church; she has blessed him with the following children - Mary E., married; John, Layman, Francis L., Lucinda A., married; Freeman Ulery, Wilbert, teacher; Albert N. James B., deceased; Clement L.V. deceased; infant, deceased.
Jacob and Mary WALTERMIRE emigrated to Muskingum Co, OH, then to Franklin Twp, in 1826 and made their permanent home in Harmony, OH.

According to the York Gazette, Philip died 13 August 1829 in York, his age is given as ca. 77, apparently his exact age was not know. Philip's Inn was located on the south side of High Street, now Market St., in York. He also owned lot 205 on South George St. It is not known if Philip rented the property on South George St. or resided there. I suspect he resided at the Tavern. Philip and Anna Maria, also called Mary and Polly SCHNEIDER WALTEMYER had a son named Ludwig (Lewis) born 1 December 1774, he was your 5th great-grandfather. Enclosed in this booklet are incomplete family group sheets, copies of wills, passenger list, maps, sketches from the Lewis MILLER book, and census records to help give you a better understanding of the WALTEMYER Family History which I enjoyed compiling. Very few records are available about your 5th great grandfather, Ludwig and your 4th great grandfather Jacob, except birth, death and census records. According to family hearsay your 3rd. great grandfather served in the Civil War, I was unable to substantiate the hearsay, I doubt that he served in the Civil War. - See Adam WALTEMYER - Civil War records - 8A. I erred. 1998.
