The Family of the Reverend
Robert and Mary (HIGHFIELD) MILLER
I found a narrative by Nathaniel C. HUNTER on
the internet. It appears, based on the content and what I already
know, to be genuine. The information with an * in front is taken from that
narrative. Where it disagrees with
what I already have, I have either kept both pieces of information and indicated
Nathaniel's with an * or I
verified the information, cited the source and kept only the correct
information.

Biographical Memoirs of Wyandot County, Ohio, B.F. Bowen, Publisher, Logansport, IN, 1902, pp. 404ff. DAVID SELSOR MILLER This well-known man was for many years a prominent farmer and dealer in stock. He is now practically retired from business, though he still retains his agricultural interests and is also a shipper of hay. Before referring more particularly to his personal career it will be appropriate to note a few facts regarding his ancestors. David Selsor MILLER is a member of one of the notable pioneer families of Ohio. His great-great-grandparents, Robert and Elizabeth MILLER, of Scotland, emigrated to Prince George county, Md., in 1738. In this county their eldest son, David, was born, and here he was married to Miss Rachel BLACKWOOD, who was also born in this county. Her mother, Ann SWAIN, was born in this country, but her father, John BLACKWOOD, was a native of England. David MILLER was a gallant and patriotic soldier of the Revolution and died in the service in 1778. His son, Robert, was born in Prince George county, Md., on the 19th day of August, 1767. He was married to Miss Mary HIGHFIELD on the 19th day of January, 1793, and in a few days thereafter removed to Buckingham county, Va. In the spring of 1797 he removed to Kentucky and settled in Mason county. He was ordained a deacon of the Methodist Episcopal church by Bishop ASBURY in Cincinnati in 1809 and was later ordained an elder by Bishop Robert R. ROBERTS. Becoming thoroughly dissatisfed with the institution of slavery Rev. Mr. MILLER emancipated his slaves in 1912 and removed to Champaign (now Clark) county, Ohio. He was uncompromising foe of slavery and intemperance and his pronounced views on these questions were far in advance of his time. David MILLER, his eldest son, and the father of David Selsor MILLER, was born in Buckingham county, Va., February 12, 1794, and was married to Sarah BENT PARKER October 28, 1833. He was three years old when he was taken by his parents to Kentucky and in 1812 accompanied them on their removal to Ohio. Here he received the advantages of such schooling as was the lot of the farmer boy in that early day. On April 7, 1827, he came to what is now known as Pitt township, Wyandot county, Ohio (at that time Salt Rock township, Marion county), and settled in what was then called the Sandusky Plains. He entered land and bought it at the first land sale held there, and on that tract he made his home. Altogether he entered and bought one thousand acres of land in what is now Pitt township, Wyandot county. He started active life there a comparatively poor man, but was energetic and ambitious and soon gained a competency. He made a business of going to Indiana and Illinois to buy cattle which he brought to the Sandusky Plains and grazed during the summer. He then drove them to market at Philadelphia, Penn., or to Baltimore, Md. He was also the pioneer sheep raiser of this county and a breeder of fine cattle and horses. At the time of his death he was the owner of five thousand acres of land in Wyandot county. At one time he held the office of county commissioner of Marion county, Ohio, and after the organization of Wyandot county he held the same office there. he was formerly a stanch Democrat, but upon the formation of the Republican party he joined that organization. he was one of the principal supporters of the first Republican paper published in Wyandot county. David MILLER was thoroughly Methodist in his religious views and his home was the stopping place for itinerant preachers. He was a man of strong mentality and was foremost in the advancement of all worthy enterprises. He built the first frame house in Wyandot county. He died on the 28th day of August, 1855, at the age of sixty-one years, and now lies in Oak Hill cemetery, situated south of Upper Sandusky, Ohio. David MILLER's wife, whose maiden name was Sarah BENT, was born on the 19th day of August, 1806,in Belpre, Ohio. She was the daughter of Abner and Elizabeth (WILLIAMS) BENT, who settled in Marion county, Ohio, at a very early day. Her ancestry dates from John and Edith BENT, residents of England, the former of whom died July 11, 1588, and the latter in 1601. Her grandfather, Silas BENT, was born in Sudbury, Mass., April 14, 1744. He saw service in Captain Ephraim JACKSON's company in Canada in the French and Indian war. He served as private, ensign and first lieutenant in the Revolutionary war. On July 1, 1781, he was commissioned lieutenant-colonel of the Seventh Regiment, Massachusetts militia, and held this position until his removal from Rutland in 1798. He was a member of the Ohio Company at Marietta. Mr. BENT and others laid out Belpre, Ohio, which was situated sixteen miles down the Ohio river. At this place he spent the remainder of his days. He died April 4, 1818, respected by all who knew him. The connection of his ancestors with Revolutionary war entitles our subject, David Selsor MILLER, to membership in the Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Abner BENT was a farmer residing in Marion county, Ohio. He was born in 1780 and died in 1834. His daughter, Sarah BENT, was quite young when brought to Marion county. She was married in 1826 to George PARKER, who died in 1828. They were the parents of one child, Mary Ellen, who was born March 19, 1827, in Marion county, Ohio, married F.F. FOWLER October 23, 1851, and died January 30, 1877, near DeWitt, Ark. Mrs. Sarah BENT PARKER was again married October 28, 1833 to David MILLER. She survived her husband about four years, dying on the 24th day of June, 1859, at the age of fifty-three years, and also lies in Oak Hill cemetery. She was an active and worthy member of the Methodist Episcopal church. David and Sarah MILLER were the parents of three children, viz.: Maria M., born November 21, 1835, married in 1855 to R.N. TAYLOR and died April 1, 1874; Princess A., born August 4, 1837, became the wife of James H. ANDERSON in 1856, and is now living in Columbus, Ohio, and our subject. David Selsor MILLER was born in Salt Rock township, Marion county (now Pitt township, Wyandot county), Ohio, on the 23d day of June, 1843. His boyhood days were spent on his father's farm and here he attended the district schools. Upon the death of his father, which occurred in in 1855, his mother with her family moved to Upper Sandusky, Ohio, where Mr. MILLER attended the public schools. He also attended the Ohio Wesleyan University at Delaware, Ohio, for a short time. At this time his health failed. In May, 1863, he took a trip to Europe, spending most of the time in Germany, for the purpose of recuperating his health, and returned to his native land in January, 1864. Upon his return he engaged for about one year in farming and stock raising. Then he went to Alabama, where he bought a large plantation and went into the business of raising cotton. After spending two years in the south Mr. MILLER returned to this county and for two years again operated his farm in connection with stock raising. In 1872 he became a member of the firm of G.B. STEVENSON & Co., manufacturers of sawmills, engines, etc. In 1874 this firm was dissolved and Mr. MILLER again engaged in the live stock business, which he followed about nine years. In 1885, he went to Pittsburg, Penn., and took a position as salesman in the stock yards in that city, being with the firm of S.B. HEDGES & Co. for four years. In 1892 Mr. MILLER engaged in the hay business. On the 10th day of April, 1873, David Selsor MILLER was united in marriage with Miss Fannie WITTER, who was born at Frederick, Md., March 17, 1845, and died on the 15th day of December, 1888, at Upper Sandusky, Ohio. Her remains were taken back to her birthplace for interment. Fraternally Mr. MILLER is a member of Warpole Lodge No. 176, F. & A.M., McCutcheon Chapter, No. 96, Royal Arch Masons, and Marion Commandery, No. 36, Knights Templar. He is a thirty-second-degree Scottish Rite Mason, and is a member of the Ancient Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. He has been a Mason since 1864, joining as soon as he reached the required age. He is a member of the Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. After an active life Mr. MILLER is now living practically a retired life. By strict attention to the ethics of life he has won a reputation for probity and is a man whose word is as good as his bond. He has earned and enjoys the honest regard of the community in which he lives.
HIGHFIELD Conundrum
There appear to be two (possibly connected) HIGHFIELD families in Maryland about the time Mary met and married Robert MILLER: Jeremiah & Sabra (?) HIGHFIELD and Leonard & Ann (?) HIGHFIELD. They might have been brothers as witnessed by the fact that Jeremiah and Sabra named one of their sons "Leonard." Peden, in More Marylanders to Kentucky, 1778-1828, states, on p. 77: "Leonard HIGHFIELD served as a private in the militia of St. Mary's Co, Maryland in 1777. 'Leonard HIGHFIELD, farmer' moved from St. Clements to Pendleton Co, Kentucky in 1796. [Ref: S. Eugene Clements and F. Edward Wright's Maryland Militia in the Revolutionary War, p. 210, and Regina C. Hammett's History of St. Mary's Co, Maryland (1977), p. 86]." Peden's Marylanders to Kentucky, 1775-1825 lists Jeremiah HIGHFIELD from Charles Co, MD, who married Sabra (?) as having the following children born in MD between 1774 & 1789: Ann Inlow, Jeremiah, Leonard and Sarah Dennis. Jeremiah moved to Fayette Co, KY in 1789 and his children later moved to Woodford Co, KY. Peden references Kentucky Ancestors (Frankfort, KY: KY Historical Society Q1965-1981, p. 138).
From David BERNS 27 Jul 2004, Genform: Jeremiah HIGHFIELD was born about 1750, probably in MD, He passed away after 1805 in Woodford Co, KY. It is believed that he had two brothers named Bennet and Hezekiah HIGHFIELD and that his family may have originally been from NC. During the Revolutionary War, he was a private in the Militia and served in the MD 12th Battalion in Captain John PARNHAM's Company in 1777. He provided wheat for the use of the military in 1782. He is cited in the 2003 DAR Patriot Index for his Public Service in MD. He is known to have lived in Charles Co, MD and the 1783 tax assessment for that Co shows him owning 93 acres. He moved his family to Fayette Co, KY and was counted there in the 1790 census. He later moved to Pendleton Co, KY where he owned 50 acres on Licking Creek. His wife's name was Sabra ?. The names of the parents of Jeremiah HIGHFIELD are not known to us. The children of Jeremiah and Sabra were: Jeremiah Jr (1772) who married Mary TAYLOR in 1804. John (1774). Anne (1775) who married Jesse ENLOW in 1795. Leonard (about 1778) who married Margaret TAYLOR on 26 Jul 1810. Henry (1788). Sarah (1789) who married John DENNIS. John O. (about 1799) and William (1799). It is likely that the two wives Mary and Margaret TAYLOR were sisters, but we do not know the parentage of either.
From David BERNS 27 Jul 2004, Genform: Following is a history of my great-great grandfather Leonard HIGHFIELD: Leonard HIGHFIELD's birth year is believed to be 1778. He was born in Charles Co, MD. He passed away in Pendleton Co, KY on 6 Oct 1845. His surname is also sometimes listed as HIEFILL or HIGHFILL. His family relocated to Pendleton Co, KY before 1803. He was married 26 Jul 1810 to Margaret TAYLOR. Leonard HIGHFIELD was a soldier in the War of 1812, a member of the 10th regiment of Kentucky Militia and was badly wounded in the leg in May 1813 at the Battle of Fort Meigs in OH. He first appeard on the tax rolls as a landowner in 1826. By 1834, he owned 350 acres and five horses. His home in KY was a plantation where the manual work was done by a group of slaves. His wife Margaret passed away at a young age, and he was remarried in 1822 to Elizabeth AMMERMAN. His last years were spent on a large farm on Short Creek in Pendleton Co, KY. Our family histories indicate that the HIGHFIELDs were of German descent, but this has not been confirmed.
From Tim McGOOGAN 28 Aug 2003 Genforum. I have an Anna HIGHFILL married to Jesse E. ENLOW. Her father is Jeremiah HIGHFILL/HIGHFIELD. She has at least 3 brothers: William b 1799, Jeremiah b. 1772, Leonard about 1776 and I have Anna down as b. 1780. Her Brother William's son married Anna's granddaughter, Elizabeth ALLEN. Anna and Jesse's Daughter is Susannah ENLOW 1797-1887 who married Archibald ALLEN 1799-1855. Susannah had Elizabeth 1822-1885 who married Samuel Greenfield HIGHFILL 1818-1899. Elizabeth had William HIGHFILL who married Emma Susan OTT. I might have more specific dates buried here somewhere. If this has been helpful let me know and I can look for specifics.
Charles D. HUNTER, age 15, b. OH is living with David Selsor MILLER, Sr. and Sarah BENT in the 1850 Census. There is no relationship given. Who is he? I cannot find him in the HUNTERs in either this file or in my Nathaniel HUNTER file (see #110/111). The MILLERs, with Charles, are living in Wyandot County, OH, at the time of the 1850 Census.
Edward ORTON Jr. Find-A-Grave. Edward ORTON Jr. was a son of the first President of The Ohio State University. Edward Jr. graduated from OSU in 1884 with an Engineering Degree and worked for a time in the mining industry. For a time he served in the academic realm, first as Director of the Department of Ceramics at OSU beginning in 1894. From 1902-06 and 1910-15 he served as Dean of the College of Engineering at OSU. He served in the US military during WWI, where he achieved the rank of Brigadier General and received the Distinguished Service Medal from Congress. ORTON was the founder of the Standard Pyrometric Cone Company, which is still in existence today (Orton Ceramic Foundation). He was well known for philanthropy, buying and donating the land that would become Camp Mary Orton. He served as President of the Columbus, Ohio Chamber of Commerce for 1921-22 and received degrees from Rutgers College (Doctor of Science) and Alfred University (Doctor of Law) and again from The Ohio State University (Ceramic Engineer). Other professional achievements include serving as Secretary of the American Ceramics Society (1899-1917) and as its President in 1930. Additionally, he was President of the Ohio Institute of Mining Engineers and Ohio State Geologist (a position held by his father) from 1899-1906.

REV. ROBERT MILLER (deceased). Rev. Robert MILLER was born
in Prince George Co., Md., on the 19th day of August, 1757; his father was
born in America, of Scotch parentage, and died while a soldier for the cause
of American independence, leaving a widow and six children, of whom Robert,
then only 11 years of age, was the oldest. His lot was the usual one in
those days, of a hard struggle with poverty, notwithstanding which he educated
himself in the English branches of study; learned the trade of carpenter and
worked at his trade for several years, until the 19th days of January 1793, he
was married to Mary Highfield (to whom were born three children) and
immediately afterward moved to the State of Virginia, where he lived until the
fall of 1796, when he emigrated to Kentucky, crossing the mountains to the
Monongahela River, near Brownsville, Penn., where he remained during the
winter, and in the spring of 1797, conveyed his family and household goods on
flat-boats down that river and the Ohio to Limestone (now Maysville), Ky., in
which State he settled as a farmer, first in Mason and afterward in Fleming
Co. May 7, 1799, his wife having died, he was married again to Elizabeth
HANSON, who had born to her six children. In the year 1912, he
again removed his family to the Pretty Prairie, in Champaign Co., Ohio, and
bought a considerable body of land in what is now known as Moorefield
Township, in Clark Co., where he died Oct. 18, 1834, and was buried in the
graveyard of the Moorefield M.E. Church, being a tract of land which he
himself had donated as the site for a church and for burial purposes.....

DEATH OF THE REV. ROBERT
MILLER
To the Editor of the Western Christian Advocate:
Our much esteemed brother Robert MILLER, of Clark County, Ohio, died
October 10, 1834, in the 68 year of of his age, surrounded by his numerous
family of children, grandchildren and friends. I would gladly pay a
tribute of respect to the memory of our very exemplary and truly excellent
brother, by giving a brief history of his pious and useful life, which was for
so many years devoted to God and the good of his church; but, such being the
rules of your paper, I must content myself with a few lines. Our much
esteemed brother was born in Prince George County, Md., August 19th, 1767.
His father fell fighting for American Independence, and left little Robert,
with several other children, under the care of their widowed mother.
When a boy, he heard the first Methodist preacher who visited that section of
the country, and soon found the gospel to be "the power of God unto salvation"
--of which he became himself a preacher of no small abilities. His
talent was a little singular from most men; but it was evident he was not
singular in order to be popular--it was peculiar to the man. In an early
day, he removed to Kentucky, and was a witness of, and an instrument in the
great revival of religion that took place under the ministry of McKENDREE,
BURK, and others--came to this state in an early day, and, by the
blessing of God, his industry procured for him a handsome property--a liberal
portion of which was devoted to the building of a meeting-house, and to the
support of the ministry, at home and abroad.--He preached much, for a local
preacher--frequently filling, with general satisfaction, the places of sick
and absent preachers on the circuit. His last illness was a bilious
fever, terminating in a species of palsy. On a visit to his oldest son,
on the Sandusky plains, he was taken unwell, but rode to Mt. Morin meeting
house--preached, and had his last interview with his old and intimate friend,
Dr. J.D. ELBERT--came home, and after suffering excruciatingly, but
patiently, for 10 days, he died.--His last moments were truly interesting.
He said to three of the preachers, who visited him in company a few days
before he left us, "Tell all my friends, that all's well." He gave
charge to all his family, in respect to his will, and their duty, &, then said
to brother J. BOUCHER, "Preach my funeral," & closed his eyes on all
below. Farewell, though man of God, farewell! Wm. H. RAPER.

The Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1812 through the efforts of Rev. Robert MILLER. First meeting held in the log house of Judge McKINNON, on the banks of Buck Creek where New Moorefield now stands. It was called "MILLER's Church: until 1833 when the first church building was erected on the ground donated by Robert MILLER at a cost of $600. At this time the name was changed to "Moorefield Methodist Episcopal Church." In 1817, there were about 70 members in the church and in 1859 the congregation had assumed such proportions that a new church was found necessary. It was built in the same year. (Beers History of Clark Co Ohio 1882).

INTERVIEW/ARTIFACTS RECORDS
WRITINGS/HISTORIES/NEWSPAPERS/MAGAZINE RECORDS
Excerpted from "John C. MILLER" in The Biographical Record of Clark Co, OH, pp. 492-493: Robert MILLER was born in Prince George Co, Maryland, in 1767, and at the age of about thirty years became a resident of Kentucky, making his way into that state when the work of progress and improvement had scarcely been begun there, and ere its admission to the Union. During the journey of the family to the new home in the western wilds Reuben MILLER was born, his birth occurring in Fayette Co, Pennsylvania, January 19, 1797. At that time the emigrant company were constructing keel boats to carry them down the Monongahela and Ohio rivers to their destination - the town of Limestone, Kentucky, now known as Maysville, Kentucky. Robert MILLER took up his abode in Fleming Co, that state, and became a prosperous landowner and slaveholder. He was also accounted one of the prominent and influential residents of his community. His was an irreproachable life in consistent harmony with his professions as a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, which he joined at an early age. In 1809, through the appointment of Bishop ASBURY, he became a licensed local preacher and his strong, logical and convincing utterances made him a power in his denomination. He was a man of remarkable originality of thought and his diction was concise and forcible. His sermons were famous for graphic descriptions and illustrations and his words seldom failed to arouse his hearers in a way that left a deep impress upon their lives. With a keen sense of justice, it became apparent to him that the system of slave holding was wrong, and acting upon his conviction, in 1812, he liberated all of his bondsmen and with his family removed to Champaign Co, Ohio, settling upon a large tract of land on Pretty Prairie, which is now within the limits of Clark Co.
Beers, History of Champaign Co, Ohio, p. 510: August 1819, Robert Miller preached to the Indians at Mt. Tabor. A very large colored man named Jonathan Stuart acted as interpreter. Indians were chiefly Wyandots and Senecas. They had a great many ponies and dogs with them.

Church, being a tract of land which he himself had donated as the site for a church and for burial purposes. His own account of his religious life and ministry is quite lengthy, and we have space for only a few extracts; he wrote of himself as follows "My mother and most of my relations called themselves church people (the Church of England), and I thought nobody was right as to religion but them. I sometimes heard of a people called Methodists, and from what I heard about them I was exceedingly mad against them, and thought they were the false prophets. About the 21st year of my age, the Methodists began to preach in the neighborhood where I lived. Among the rest of the people, I went to hear what these bad folks would say. The preacher began to preach, and I to hear; my prejudices were removed; my heart felt the truth of his doctrine, and I went home in some sense a Methodist. In February, 1789, I joined the church. April, the same year, the Lord spoke peace to my soul." From this time forward, all through his life, he was an uncompromising foe to wickedness of all sorts, so much so as that he said of himself, "My friends thought I was overmuch righteous because I would not run with them to the same excess of riot. I became the wicked's by-word and the drunkard's song." In 1802, he was licensed to preach, when, as he wrote, "I now begat in my plain manner, to cry aloud against wickedness of all kinds, such as swearing, Sabbath-breaking, drunkenness, and, above all, the abominable practice of holding our fellow creatures in bondage. Now the tongue of persecution was let loose against me by the wicked, and not only by them but by the religious, so-called, of all denominations, the Methodists not excepted; but still I went on to preach." Rather an early Abolitionist for a Kentuckian was this old-time Methodist preacher. The result of this controversy was that, after manumitting a few slaves which he possessed, he removed from what he called "the bloody land" to Ohio. In the year 1809, he was ordained, by Bishop Asbury, a local Deacon, and in 1831, by Bishop Roberts, a local Elder in the M.E. Church. As a preacher, he was clear, incisive and forcible in his utterance, and famous throughout this part of Ohio for his quaint and graphic illustrations. Many stories are told by early settlers of his peculiar gifts and powers in the pulpit, for none of which have we space in our record. He died, as he had lived, fearing God and not man, and left a widow, now long since dead, and a large family of children, who, with their descendants and connections, are among the most prominent residents of Clark, Champaign and Logan Cos. Having felt the fires of persecution in his earlier ministry, there was placed, by his own request, on his tombstone, in the little quiet graveyard above named, the simple epitaph, "Let me alone."

Synopsis:
Excerpted from "John C. MILLER" in The Biographical Record of Clark Co, OH, pp. 492-493: During the journey of the family to the new home in the western wilds Reuben MILLER was born, his birth occurring in Fayette Co, Pennsylvania, January 19, 1797. Reuben MILLER was reared upon the old homestead farm here [Springfield, OH] and acquired his education in the schools of this portion of the state. He also bore his part in caring for the home farm and in controlling the property, giving his father the benefit of his assistance until he reached his majority. About this time Reuben Miller was united in marriage to Miss Mary HEDGES, a native of Berkeley Co, West Virginia, and they became the parents of seven children: Mrs. Caroline H. HARRIS, who resided near Monticello, Illinois, but is now deceased; D.B., who was a physician of Covington, Kentucky, but has also passed away; Mrs. Elizabeth N. OGDEN, of Keokuk, Iowa, also deceased; Robert Tabb, who died in Springfield just as he was entering upon what appeared to be a very successful business career; John C.; Joseph N., a rear admiral of the United States navy, who is now living retired; and Henry R., who is now a prominent citizen of Keokuk, Iowa. In order to provide for his family, Reuben MILLER engaged in teaching school and in surveying land. In 1826, he received the appointment of surveyor of Clark Co and acted in that capacity for nine years in a most creditable manner. On the expiration of that period he was elected Co auditor and his fidelity to duty and the confidence reposed in him is indicated by the fact that for eighteen consecutive years he filled that position. He inherited his father's talent for speaking and his zeal for religion, and during all the years of his public service he also acted as a local minister of the Methodist Episcopal church and filled various pulpits of central Ohio on Sabbath days in the absence of the regular pastor. His public utterances were earnest, thoughtful, logical, and carried weight wherever he was heard. As a writer, too, he possessed more than ordinary ability and was a most entertaining conversationalist, being noted for his wit and humor. These characteristics have been found in many members of the Miller family and representatives of the name have therefore been of more than local prominence and importance as well as influence.
OGDEN, R.B. (Robert Birch) from The History of Lee County, IA 1879, p. 705. OGDEN, R.B., book and job printer; born in Leesburg, Loudoun Co, Va., Feb. 5, 1825; came with his parents to Urbana, Ohio in 1832, in 1838 he went to Cincinnati, there he entered the office of the Cincinnati Gazette and learned the printer's trade; remained there about five years, then went to Springfield, Ohio, where he remained until he came to Keokuk in 1846; published the Keokuk Gazette from 1847 to 1849 when he was appointed Assistant Postmaster; in 1850, he established the first book and stationery story in Keokuk; carried on that business until 1865; since then he has been in the book and job printing business. Mr. OGDEN's wife was Miss Elizabeth M. MILLER, daughter of Rev. Reuben MILLER, of Springfield Ohio; they have four children - Charles W., Robert M., Helen G. and Mary M.
Henry R. MILLER, Portrait and Biographical Album of Lee County, IA, 1887, p. 551. Henry R. MILLER, of Keokuk, is President, Treasurer, Superintendent and General Manager of Keokuk Gas-Light and Coke Company, with which he became connected in 1875. He is thoroughly skilled in all the details relating thereto, and his present responsible position is abundant evidence of his work and efficiency. Our subject is a native of Ohio, and was born in Springfield March 31, 1839. His boyhood was passed in his native city, where he had the advantages of a good education and received early training in business matters. In 1868 Mr. MILLER was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of Judge D. MOOAR, a prominent and wealthy citizen of Keokuk, and of this union there were born three children - Daniel, Bessie and Howard. Mr. and Mrs. M. are prominently connected with St. John's Episcopal Church, of which our subject has been Secretary of the Vestry since 1875. Mr. M. is a prominent Mason, being the Worshipful Master of Hardin Lodge No. 29, A.F. & A.M.; High Priest of Gate City Chapter No. &, R.A.M. and Eminent Commander of Damascus Commandery No. 5.

Synopsis:
A bit of confusion with Dudley Breed MILLER's wife. The Iowa Marriage record, in their own hand, indicates her name to be Mary Frances RENEAU and indicates this is her first marriage and her parents as Robert RENEAU and Addie PONTIUS. However, the birth record of their child, Florence, indicates the parents to be Dudley MILLER and Mamie (her nickname) PACE. I find no marriage for Mary France RENEAU or Mamie RENEAU to anyone named "PACE" so I have no clue where this comes from or why it's listed that way. It's a bit far-fetched to think someone transcribed "RENEAU" into "PACE" but I have no explanation for this oddity. If I figure it out, I'll offer the explanation. Until then, I'm going with the marriage record as I have no original birth record - just the printed transcription on ancestry and no source document to which I can refer.
Hugh Hedges MILLER's WWI draft registration showed him living in Memphis, Shelby Co, TN and in the 1930 Census, he was single and living as a boarder in Memphis

Synopsis:
The Biographical Record of Clark Co,
OH, states, on pp. 492ff: John C. MILLER. It is an important
public duty to honor and perpetuate as far as is possible the memory of an
eminent citizen, one who, by his blameless and honorable life and distinguished
career reflected credit not only upon the city but also upon the state and upon
the profession which he represented. John C. MILLER was long a
distinguished member of the Clark Co bar. A man of irreproachable
private life, his example is indeed well worthy of emulation. The memory
of his upright career should serve as an inspiration to those who knew him.
A well known jurist of Illinois said: "In the American state the great and
good lawyer must always be prominent, for he is one of the forces that move and
control society. Public confidence has generally been reposed in the legal
profession and it has ever been a defender of popular rights, the champion of
freedom regulated by law, the fir support of good government. No political
preferment, no mere place can add to the power or increase the honor which
belongs to the pure and educated lawyer." Judge MILLER was one
honored by and an honor to the legal fraternity of Ohio. He stood
prominent among the representative members of the bar of the state and he
attained to his position through marked ability. Springfield may be proud
to number him among her native sons. He was born in this city when it was
but a village, his natal day being April 13, 1834. He came of an ancestry
honorable and distinguished. In the maternal line, he was a lineal
descendant of Sir Charles HEDGES, an English statesman of the seventeenth
century and a member of the cabinet of Queen Anne, the last reigning sovereign
of the house of Stuart. In America the MILLER family has figured
prominently in public affairs establishing the history of the nation. The
great-great-grandparents of the Judge were Robert and Elizabeth MILLER,
who, in 1738, left their home in Scotland and sailed to the new world, taking up
their residence in Prince George Co, Maryland. David MILLER,
the great-grandfather of the Judge, became a soldier of the Colonial army during
the Revolutionary war and in 1778 gave up his life as a ransom for the liberty
of the people.
In taking up the personal history of Judge John C. MILLER, we present to
our readers the life record of one of the distinguished sons of Clark Co.
His early education was supplemented by study in the Ohio Conference High School
of Springfield, at which time the Rev. Solomon HOWARD was principal - a
man of great learning, who afterward became president of the Ohio University of
Athens. Judge MILLER completed his course by graduation when only
fifteen years of age and after leaving school he entered a printing office where
he learned the trade. When he had mastered it he became anxious to prepare
for professional life and at the age of eighteen he entered up on the study of
law under the direction of the Hon. Samuel SHELLABARGER, who in later
years became very prominent, both in the profession and on the floor of
congress, where he represented his district for several terms and was one of the
most prominent attorneys in the famous Hayes-Tilden contest. In April,
1855, after a thorough preparation, Mr. MILLER was admitted to the bar of
Ohio and a few years later began practice in Springfield. He entered upon
his chosen work at a bar which numbered many distinguished members, but his
ability, close application and indefatigable efforts soon won recognition and he
gained a very desirable reputation for a young man - a reputation that increased
as the years went by, gaining him distinction as a leading jurist of the state.
In public affairs he was prominent and honored. In April, 1861, he was
chosen mayor of Springfield by a very flattering majority and when the Civil war
broke out, less than a month later, he immediately became identified with all of
the measures for the promotion of recruiting, for relief to soldiers' families,
and for everything that could pertain to the Union cause in defending its
welfare. He was chairman of the citizens' military committee of Clark
Co, and he afterward served as a private in the One Hundred and Fifty-second
Regiment of Ohio Infantry, in the company of Captain BUSHNELL, who was
later governor of Ohio. In the fall of 1861, he was elected prosecuting
attorney of Clark Co and was several times reelected to that office.
In 1869 he was chosen city solicitor of Springfield and was retained in that
position by continued reelections until 1876, when he resigned to accept the
office of probate judge, to which he had been elected in the previous October.
Four times he was chosen for that position and before the close of his fifth
term he was elected one of the judges of the court of common pleas of the second
judicial district, at the general election in the fall of 1890. Taking his
place upon the bench of that court, he there served until his death in 1900.
A man of unimpeachable character, of natural intellectual endowments, with a
thorough understanding of the law, patience, urbanity and industry, he took to
the bench the very highest qualifications for this responsible office of the
state government, and his record as a judge was in harmony with his record as a
man and a lawyer - distinguished by unswerving integrity and a masterful grasp
of every problem which presented itself for solution. He had a thorough
and comprehensive knowledge of the published decisions of courts, but he was not
a case lawyer. His own decisions were founded upon principles of law and
attracted the attention of the profession throughout the state. Possessed
of a keen, incisive intellect, the controlling points of a case were quickly
perceived by him and his strong, thoroughly trained and logical mind enabled him
to present his conclusions tersely and concisely and in a manner to carry
conviction. In the exercise of these high judicial qualifications Judge
MILLER was entirely impartial and independent, and yet always courteous and
considerate.
On the 4th of October, 18609, was celebrated the marriage of John C. MILLER
and Miss Marianna T. HOGLEN, a daughter of James R. HOGLEN, of
Dayton, now deceased. They became the parents of two children:
Robert J., who married Miss Freda BRETNEY, of Lebanon, Kentucky, and has
a son, Robert Wickliffe; and Eleanor C., the wife of Louis E. NILES of
New York city. The Judge's interest centered in his family and he
considered no personal sacrifice on his behalf too great if it would promote the
welfare and happiness of his wife and children.
He was a member of Clark Lodge, No. 101, F&A.M., and Palestine Commandery, No.
33, K.T. He also belonged to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the
Junior Order of United American Mechanics, and Mitchell Post, No. 45, G.A.R.
In the line of his profession he was connected with the Co and state bar
associations and hew as regarded as a valued representative of each social,
political or professional organization with which he was connected. While
he was inflexible in support of everything which he considered to be right and
of political principles which he endorsed, it can truly be said that Judge
MILLER was never an office seeker, but that political preferment came to him
in recognition of his marked ability and superior merit. A contemporary
biographer has said of him: "The irreproachability of his private life
contributed to fix and maintain his place in public esteem and his great
popularity was due to his recognized ability and magnetic personality. He
voted with the Republican party, and his religious faith was that of the
Methodist church, in which he long held membership. He was never narrow,
however, but found as the friend of all deserving people irrespective of creed
or belief. When death claimed him the different societies with which he
was connected attended his funeral in a body. Deep indeed was the regret
felt throughout the community. It is said of an eminent man of old, that
he has done things worthy to be written; that he has written things worthy to be
read; and by his life has contributed to the welfare of the republic and
the happiness of mankind. This eulogy can well be pronounced upon Judge
MILLER and the many who looked up to him and respected him realized as fully
as did his social friends that a true man had fallen.
The following information, at Find-a-Grave, was taken from the book 20th Century History of Springfield and Clark County, Ohio and Representative Citizens, pages 521-522, on file at the Springfield, Ohio, Clark County Library as well as the online edition. In 1890, John C. MILLER was elected to fill the vacancy made by the death of Judge Charles R. WHITE. In January, 1891, he relieved Judge HAGAN, who had been appointed to fill the vacancy until an election. Judge MILLER came to the common Pleas bench with a long career in public life. His father, Reuben MILLER, likewise had a long public career in our city and county. He was apprenticed as a printer, and afterward took up the study of law, and was admitted to the bar in 1855. In 1861 he was elected Mayor of the City of Springfield, and in the fall of the same year was elected prosecuting attorney of the county, and several times re-elected. In 1869, he was chosen city solicitor, and held the office by repeated elections until 1876, when he resigned to accept the position of Probate Judge, to which office he had been elected in the previous October. This position he held until 1891, when he resigned to accept the position of Common Pleas judge, to which he had been elected the previous fall. He was twice re-elected to this position. He died at his residence in this city. A daughter - Mrs. Eleanor Caroline MILLER (R.B.) OGDEN. (-1915) and a son - Robert J. MILLER (1861-1927). His father - Reuben MILLER.
Find-a-Grave 16 Apr 1891. Urbana Newspaper Abstract. Louis Edward NILES. A tremendous sensation was caused in Springfield Saturday by the arrest of Dr. LE NILES, GC CUTLER, his wife Effie CUTLER and Ellen TALBOTT of a charge of child stealing or kidnapping. The last three named made a full confession to taking the two little sons of Dr. NILES from their boarding place pending the decision the habeas corpus case which would decide their custody. Miss Ellen TALBOTT, who is an old maid dressmaker about 45 years of age lives in Springfield where the children were kept., she hired a buggy and took the children to Mr. & Mrs. CUTLER in St. Paris, and they took care of them until the 9th April when they were taken to Pittsburg and then to Michigan. Dr. NILES was arrested at his office Saturday on a warrant and taken to jail. The children, Louis and Paul, 4 years and 16 months, are the cause of the dispute. The details of their marital troubles are sensational. Mrs. NILES is of a noble Spanish family who eloped from a convent with Dr. NILES and left him and went to New York City charging brutal treatment; she returned and brought action to gain possession of her children; the case was to be decided the day they were stolen. He charged her with extravagance and drunkenness. The courts have been very severe on child stealing. 31 Mar 1892. Urbana Newspaper Abstract. Divorce granted to Dr. Louis E. NILES from wife Paula B. NILES - gross neglect. The two children, Louis 5 years and Paul 2 years, in custody and retained by the court; children to remain in the care of Dr. & Mrs. Alex McGREGOR of Springfield as a result of being hidden earlier by the father. Mrs. NILES is the daughter of Spanish Noblemen and ran away from a convent to marry the doctor.

Synopsis:
From The Biographical Record of Clark Co, OH, pp. 495ff: Upon the pages of history Rear Admiral Joseph N. MILLER has engraven his name. With a laudable ambition for advancement, with devotion to his country's good, with marked merit and ability arising from thoroughness, close application and enterprising industry, he attained to high rank in the navy and when his years of service had reached the number which merits retirement his name was placed upon the list of those from whom no longer active aid is required. Admiral MILLER was born in Springfield, Ohio, November 22, 1836, and is a son of Reuben MILLER (see synopsis above), who was long a prominent office holder and influential citizen of Clark Co, identified with the development of this portion o the state from its pioneer times. In early life Admiral MILLER became imbued with a desire to become a member of his country's navy and after passing the required examination he was appointed an acting midshipman at the naval academy at Annapolis on the 1st of October, 1851. In February 1852, he was advanced one year and was graduated with third rank in his class in June, 1854. In the meantime he had made two cruises in practice on the ship Preble, in 1852-53. From the 1st of September, 1954, until the 20th of September, 1856, he served on board the United States flag ship Independence, in the Pacific squadron, and on the 22d of November, of the latter year, he passed his final examination and was warranted as a past midshipman in the navy. From the 20th of February, 1857 until October 26, 1858, he was assistant in the department of ethics and English studies in the naval academy, and on the 22d of in the navy [sic]. From the 2d of November, January, 1858, he was warranted as master 1858, until September 24, 1860, Admiral MILLER served on board the United States ship Preble on the Paraguay expedition and in the Home Squadron, and assisted in the capture of the steamers General Miramon and Marquis de la Habana, off Vera Cruz, Mexico, on March 6, 1860. [the above sentences, beginning with "From the 20th of February...." are copied verbatim from The Biographical Record. The compiler realizes it makes no sense, but was unable to make sense of it. Given that I live within 20 miles of Annapolis, I might make it there to check the facts of the history and fix the inconsistencies.] He was commissioned as a lieutenant of the navy February 19, 1860, and was assistant in the department of ethics and English studies at the naval academy from October of that year until the breaking out of the Rebellion in April 1861. At that time he was detached and ordered to the brig Perry, which was being fitted out in New York, and which was employed on the blockade and captured the privateer Savannah, off the coast of Charleston on the 3d of June, 1861, this being the first privateer captured during the war. In November, 1861, Admiral MILLER was transferred to the United States steamer Cambridge, as executive officer, and was in the action when the Cumberland and Congress were destroyed by the Merrimac, on the 12th of March, 1862. In May of that year he was transferred to the practice ship John Adams, and in August was detached on application for active service. He was commissioned as a lieutenant commander of the navy July 16, 1862, and from September following until June, 1863, he served on board the ironclad Passaic as executive officer, and was present at the naval attack on Fort McAllister, March 3, 1863, and the attack on Fort Sumter, April 7, 1863. In June of the same year, he was appointed to duty with Admiral Gregory in New York, superintending the construction of ironclads, and in September, 1863, he was ordered as executive officer of the United State steamer Sacramento, from which, in November, he was transferred to the ironclad Sangamon, on the blockade off Charleston. In April, 1864, he became commander of the ironclad Nahant, and in May he was detached from that ship and granted a sick leave. When he had recovered his health, in the following August, he was ordered to the ironclad steamer Monadnock, and was present in both attacks on Fort Fisher, the first on 24th and 25th of December, 1864, and the second on the 13th, 14th and 15th of January, 1865. In February, of the latter year, he was detached from the Monadnock and ordered to the naval academy as head of the department of seamanship and commanded the practice ship Marion during the summer cruise of 1865. From that ship he was detached on the 30th of September, 1865, and assigned to duty at the naval academy as head of the department of ethics and English studies, and in September, 1867, he was ordered to the United States steamer Powhattan, belonging to the South Pacific Squadron. There he served in the Pacific waters and in the Gulf of Mexico until January 5, 1870, when he was detached and placed on leave of absence. He was commissioned as a commander in the navy of the United States January 25, 1870, and in February of that year was ordered to duty at the New York navy yard, whence in April he was ordered to the South Pacific Squadron a chief of staff. In February, 1871, he was assigned to the command of the United States steamer Ossipee, in addition to his duties as chief of staff. In December, 1872, he was detached from that vessel and placed on waiting orders. In January, 1873, the order came which made him executive officer of the naval station at New London. In February he was transferred to the hydrographic office at Washington as assistant hydrographer. In November he was ordered to command the ironclad Ajax, which joined the fleet at Key West, assembled in anticipation of trouble with Spain. In June 1874, he was detached from the Ajax and again assigned as assistant hydrographer, and in August, 1875, he was ordered to the command of the United States steamer Tuscarora which ran a line of deep sea soundings from the Sandwich to the Fiji islands and Australia. In September, 1876, he was detached from the Tuscarora and placed on leave. After enjoying a brief rest, in the month of December of the same year he was ordered as assistant to the chief of bureau of yards and docks, and in March following he was detached from that service and ordered as inspector of the Eleventh lighthouse district, which embraced Lakes Huron, Michigan and Superior. On the 1st of October, 1880, he was detached from light house duty and ordered on special duty in the navy department at Washington, D.C. Commander MILLER was promoted to the captaincy in 1881, and since then has been in command of the recruiting ship Wabash; command of the flagship Tennessee; member of the Jeanette court of inquiry; captain of the navy yard at New York; commander of the United States ship Chicago, flagship of the squadron of evolution; in command of the training ship Vermont; and was commandant of the Boston navy yard from August, 1894, until 1897. Being at the head of the list of his grade, he was promoted to the rear admiralty on the retirement of Rear Admiral WALKER in March, 1897. With General MILES he represented the United States at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee(1897). Later he was in command of the Pacific Squadron at Honolulu and raised the United States flag on the annexation of the Hawaiian islands. Admiral MILLER has been twice married, his first wife being a daughter of Captain Joseph COMSTOCK, captain of one of the vessels of the Cunard line. She died about a year after their marriage, and several years later he married Miss Helen WILLS, a prominent Baltimore lady. They had one child, a beautiful daughter, whose death occurred in England during the jubilee festivities (1897). She was buried in the Woolsey necropolis near London. The Admiral was retired in October, 1898, and now makes his home in New York city. The student who reads between the lines will recognize qualities in him without which there is no advancement in naval service. From the time when, as an active midshipman, he went to Annapolis, he was found faithful to duty, discharging every task assigned to him with dispatch and accuracy. He mastered the science of naval warfare in all its departments and in its practice he was found equally proficient. Thus he gained advancement from one position to another and important trusts were reposed in him, with the result that the country has been benefited by his efforts in her behalf. He saw active warfare during the civil strife, and through many years has occupied prominent positions in guarding the interests of the nation and instruction those who have arisen to take the place of others who have at one time been members of the navy. Such a career is worthy of the gratitude and recognition of the nation and Admiral MILLER is honored by those who are at all familiar with his career.
From Virtualology.com. Joseph Nelson MILLER. MILLER, Joseph Nelson, naval officer, born in Ohio, 22 November, 1836. He entered the navy in 1851, became passed midshipman in 1856, master in 1858, lieutenant in 1860, lieutenant-commander in 1862, commander in 1870, and captain in 1881. He served as executive officer on the iron-clad "Passaic" in the attack upon Fort Sumter and Fort McAllister during the spring of 1863, and in the same capacity on board the "Monadnock" in both the Fort Fisher fights and was highly recommended for ability and bravery in these actions, he is now (1888) in command of the receiving-ship "Wabash."

Article. Thursday 18 Aug 1898. Logansport Pharos-Tribune, Logansport, IN. REAR ADMIRAL MILLER. The Gallant Officer Who Raised the Stars and Stripes Over the Hawaiian Islands. When Rear Admiral KIRKLAND was retired by age limit on July 4 Rear Admiral Joseph Nelson MILLER became the senior officer of the United States navy. This position he will holed till his own retirement, on November 22 next, when Rear Admiral BUNCE succeeds to the dignity. He will hold it under the retirement schedules, but one short month when he will yield it to Rear Admiral DEWEY, the hero of Manila. So that the navy, in the short space of six months, will have four senior officers, a most unusual circumstance in naval annals. Rear Admiral MILLER, has been stationed in San Francisco, in the cruiser Philadelphia, in command of the Pacific squadron, and at Honolulu to raise the stars and stripes over the newly-acquired territory. The rear admiral is fitted well for this honor, not only by his rank and splendid record, but because he is highly esteemed by all classes in Hawaii. From August, 1897, to May of 1898 he was stationed at Honolulu to guard American interests. His course there was such as to win the highest praise form all parties in that then troubled little republic. The newspaper that strongly opposed the Dole government and annexation said the "during Admiral MILLER's official sojourn in Honolulu and in the discharge of an onerous and delicate duty, he has endeared himself to the hearts of all classes of the community. His tactful discretion has proved him to be a careful and conscientious diplomatist, as well as a manly officer, anxious for the good name and cleanly discipline of the navy. Courteous, discreet and dignified, his name will be remembered in friendly appreciation in Hawaii."
Article. Saturday, 23 Jul 1898. Harrisburg Telegraph, Harrisburg, PA. OUR ISLAND ANNEX. SOME GRAND NEW FACTS ABOUT THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS. Fine Opportunities For Business Men With Capital. New Place For Tourists With Time and Money, but a Poor Place For a Man Without a Job. The stars and stripes once more float over the government house at Honolulu, and the Hawaiian Islands are at last a part of Uncle Sam's territory. Well, what of it? More than most of us realize as yet. It depends on your business and commercial interests whether the annexation of these Pacific Islands will affect you personally. If you are a politician, you realize that, for a long time at least, there will be three very fat offices to be filled. The commissioners to Hawaii have already been named but they cannot hold office forever, and your turn may come some day. When it does, you will be glad tat such islands exist, for Honolulu is a very nice place to live in, especially when you get a big salary for living there. If you are are interested in the refining of sugar, which you probably are not, the annexation of Hawaii means a lot to you. If you are one of those fortunate people with time, money and a desire to travel, here is a new field. A limited number of tourists annually take a glimpse at Honolulu, generally on their way to the orient. But there is much to be seen in the Hawaiian Islands besides the original city, and when enterprising Americans get to running winter resorts and steamer lines travel there will be very comfortable indeed. You can go by steamer from San Francisco to Honolulu in from six to seven days and your ticket will cost you $75 for first class or $25 for steerage, or you can take cabin passage on a fine mailing vessel and have a two weeks' trip for $40. There are about 79 miles of railroad lines on the island of Hawaii, but they are little used for passenger service. If you area business man with some capital, you will be interested to hear that Hawaii offers fine openings. At present there are few manufactories there, the principal industry being the management of plantations. Factories of the right kind would probably prove better than gold mines. According to a recently published report by Consul General HAYWOOD, Hawaii at present imports almost everything she uses, aside, of course, from sugar, coffee and fruits, attention having been almost exclusively given to the raising of sugar, all of which, aside from that occupied in the islands, is exported to the United States. If you have only your two hands and no capital, stay away from Hawaii until you are offered a position there. The market for all kinds of labor is overstocked, and it would be very unwise for any one to visit the islands with no capital on the mere chance of obtaining employment. Wages on the plantations including house and firewood or room and board range from $125 to $175 per month for engineers and sugar boilers, $50 to $100 per month for blacksmiths and carpenters, $10 to $75 per month for locomotive drivers, $100 to $175 per month for bookkeepers, $20 to $30 per month for teamsters. In Honolulu the rates are $5 to $6 per day for bricklayers and masons, $2.50 to $5 per day for carpenters and painters and $3 to $5 per day for merchants. Cooks receive from $3 to $8 per week; nurses, house servants and gardeners, $8 to $12 per month. Those are very good prices for labor but you must remember that all manufactured goods are very expensive and that the cost of living as an American would want to live is very high. Rear Admiral Joseph Nelson MILLER who was sent by President McKINLEY to formally take possession of the Islands, is in command of the Pacific squadron and has recently been station in the carrier Philadelphia at San Francisco. The rear admiral is fitted well for this honor not only by his rank and splendid record but because he is highly esteemed by all classes in Hawaii. From August 1897 to May of 1898, he was stationed at Honolulu to guard American interests. His course there was such as to win the highest praise from all parties in that then troubled little republic. C.T. BATES
Article. Sunday, 23 Feb 1902. The Times, Philadelphia, PA. SIXTEEN KILLED AND MANY HURT IN HOTEL FIRE. Thieves Supposed to Have Started Blaze for the Sake of Loot. HUNDREDS TRAPPED ASLEEP. Fire First Discovered in Militia Armory, Which Was Destroyed. FIREMEN DID HEROIC WORK. Dynamite, Exploding Powder and Cartridges Endangered Workers and Spectators - Toms Angel One of the Victims. Special to THE PHILADELPHIA TIMES. NEW YORK. February 22 - Sixteen guests of the Park Avenue Hotel, at Park avenue and Thirty-fourth streets, lost their lives this morning in a fire that investigation almost surely proves to have been of incendiary origin. Before the fire was discovered in the hotel the Seventy-first Regiment Armory, located diagonally across the street, had been burning for more than an hour, the first alarm having been turned in at 1:30. The origin of the armory fire is unknown. It was first seen on the third floor by a woman, who ran to the home of Battalion Chief ROSS, in Thirty-third street, and awakened him. The chief turned in an alarm, but found that while he had been preparing to leave his home other alarms had been sent and the firemen were already coming to the scene. MILLER FOLLOWED BY FATE. Rear Admiral Joseph Nelson MILLER, U.S.N., retired, who lived at the Park Avenue Hotel with his wife, was reported for some hours to have been killed, but he escaped. This morning's experience was the third New York hotel disaster in which Admiral MILLER has been in within recent years. He was at the Windsor Hotel when it burned to the ground, and was at the Murray Hill Hotel when the subway explosion occurred. "I was awakened about 1.45 o'clock," the admiral said, "which was about fifteen minutes after the flames started in the armory. I have been a sufferer from neuralgia for years, and a good deal of an invalid, and I soon saw from the way the armory was blazing that the hotel was no place for Mrs. MILLER and me. So I aroused my wife; we dressed hurriedly and went down to the lobby, prepared for instant flight. We are now very glad we took this precaution, I assure you. Fleeing from hotels, however, is getting to be an old story with us. Now I want to speak a good word for Proprietor REID. I hear it has been charged that he was delinquent in arousing his patrons and taking precautions against the spread of the fire. That is all nonsense. I saw Mr. REID myself organize his employes [sic] and saw him go through the hotel to sound a warning. He did everything that possibly could be done." It was Admiral MILLER who, as commandant of the Pacific squadron, first raised the United States flag over the Hawaiian Islands. During the civil war he was in the fleet attach on Fort Sumter and later commanded a monitor in the assault on Fort Fisher. Since the war he has been commandant of the Navy Yards at Boston and Brooklyn.
Article. Sunday, 23 Feb 1902. New-York Tribune, New York City, New York. ADMIRAL MILLER'S EXPERIENCE. Rear Admiral Joseph Nelson MILLER, U.S.N., retired, who was at the Park Avenue Hotel with his wife at the time of the fire, was congratulated yesterday upon his escape. It was the third hotel disaster from which he has escaped in safety. He was a guest at the Windsor Hotel when it was burned, and he was at the Murray Hill Hotel at the time of the dynamite explosion last month. Rear Admiral MILLER had gone up one flight from his room to watch the progress of the fire at the armory. While there, the fire broke out in the hotel, and Mrs. MILLER went to look for her husband. The admiral in the mean time descended to rescue Mrs. MILLER from the danger, and they missed each other in the search. She was overcome by the smoke and carried to the ground floor by a fireman, where she was revived., and where her husband found her a short time afterward.

Obituary: Urbana newspaper, 5 Mar 1885: Mrs. Mariah HUNTER, an old and well known resident of this Co taken ill at Mt. Tabor Church Thursday and taken to her home in Mingo where she died 26th February. She was the daughter of Robert MILLER, born Fleming Co, KY 1 August 1809, married the late Samuel HUNTER, had 11 children: 6 sons and 5 daughters, 1 died in infancy.
John M. HUNTER from Centennial Biographical History of Champaign Co, OH, pp. 221ff: The stanch [sic] Irish type is one which found many representatives in the New World and is one that has ever been found foremost in giving impetus to the march of progress, in retaining a clear mental grasp and in directing affairs along safe and conservative lines. America owes much to the Irish and has honored and been honored by noble men and women of this stock. In the agnatic line the subject of this sketch is of sturdy Irish extraction, being of the third generation of the family in the United States and in Champaign Co, Ohio, where his grandfather, Nathaniel HUNTER, took up his abode in 1811, locating in the sylvan wilds, as one of the sterling pioneers of the Co and setting himself vigorously to the task of literally hewing out a farm in the virgin forest, the land which he thus reclaimed having been furrowed and refurrowed by the plowshare for many years and giving slight evidence of the toil involved in the early days. Nathaniel HUNTER, the honored progenitor of the family in America, was born in the Emerald Isle, of fine old Celtic stock, and there he was reared and educated, his marriage being solemnized prior to his emigration to America. He left his native land in 1795, and came to the hospitable shores of the new world, locating in Greenbrier Co, Virginia, where the family maintained their home until 1811, when they came to Ohio. Mr. HUNTER settled on a tract of wild land in the northern part of what is now Salem township, Champaign Co, where he cleared and improved a good farm and where he passed the residue of his honorable and useful life, which was devoted to the great basic art of agriculture. In the year 1820 he erected a stone house, an exceptional improvement in those days, when the usual domicile of the locality was the primitive log cabin and this building is still standing and is in an excellent state of preservation, standing as a landmark of the early days and as a monument to the energy and progressive spirit of this noble pioneer. In politics, Grandfather HUNTER gave his allegiance to the Whig party, and his religious faith was that of the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he was a most devoted member, doing much to promote the cause of the Master in the community, while his house was a sort of religious center and a place where genuine and cordial welcome was ever accorded to the faithful circuit-riders of the church during the pioneer epoch. Samuel HUNTER, son of the honored pioneer and father of the subject of this review, was born in Greenbrier Co, Virginia, and was a lad of about six years at the time of the family removal to Champaign Co, where he was reared to maturity and where he devoted his life to agricultural pursuits, becoming one of the prominent farmers and representative citizens of the Co. He died at the old homestead, in Salem township, in the year 1870, at the age of sixty-five years. He married Maria MILLER, who was born in Clark Co, Ohio, whither her parents came as pioneers from Kentucky. She passed away in 1885, at the age of seventy-four years, and like her husband was ever sustained and comforted by a deep Christian faith, being a zealous member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Samuel and Maria (MILLER) HUNTER became the parents of ten children, - five sons and five daughters, - of whom one son and one daughter are deceased. John M. HUNTER, the immediate subject of this review and one of the representative citizens and business men of the city of Urbana, was born on the old homestead, in the northern part of Salem township, on the 22d of March, 1838, and he has passed his entire life in his native Co, honoring the name he bears by his upright and useful career. Growing up under the invigorating discipline of the farm, he has ever retained the highest respect for the dignity of the noble vocation which figures as the bulwark of our national prosperity, and he continued to be identified with agricultural pursuits until he had attained the age of forty years, his educational privileges in his youth being such as were afforded in the public schools of the locality and period. Upon leaving the farm Mr. HUNTER located in the village of West Liberty, where for fourteen years he was successfully engaged in the agricultural implement business. At the expiration of the period noted he disposed of this business and came to Urbana, where he has since devoted his attention to the real-estate and insurance business, in which, by his honorable business methods and progressive and discriminating management, he has attained marked prestige and developed an enterprise of no inconsiderable scope and importance, his agency taking front rank and retaining a representative support. In politics Mr. HUNTER exercises his franchise in support of the principles and policies of the Republican party, but has never sought the honors or emoluments of public office. Fraternally he is identified with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and his religious faith is that in which he was reared, both he and his wife being active workers in the First Methodist Episcopal church, while our subject has been for thirty-five years prominent in the work of the Sunday-school, where is laid the foundation of true Christian faith and worthy manhood and womanhood. On the 19th of November, 1862, Mr. HUNTER was united in marriage to Miss Sallie BALDWIN, who was born in this Co, the daughter of Richard BALDWIN, one of the pioneer farmers of this section. Of this union have been born three children, namely; F. Edgar, who is now a resident of Chicago; Nellie M., the wife of Dr. Ben S. LEONARD, of West Liberty, this Co; and Ralph Waldo E., who is associated with his father in business. Mrs. HUNTER died April 9, 1902.
Obituary: Urbana newspaper, 25 Jul 1902: The tragic news of the death of Mrs. Emma HUNTER, wife of S.M. HUNTER of Columbus, who is a brother of J.M. HUNTER of this city, was received Sunday. The deceased had been in ill health for some time. She got up on Thursday and left the house only to be found later, by some men, in the Scioto River at the rear of the Ohio Penitentiary. The body was sent back here on the Panhandle and was taken to Mt. Tabor Cemetery, where a short funeral was held. James KELLY and William BINKLEY discovered the body. Mrs. HUNTER was the mother of Miss Florence HUNTER, assistance Superintendent of the schools here.
Obituary. The Shreveport Times. 29 May 1915. MRS. W. RENDALL DIES SUDDENLY. FOUND DEAD BY HER HUSBAND HEART FAILURE OR CONGESTION PROBABLY CAUSE. The friends of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. R. RENDALL, 641 Stoner avenue were greatly shocked last night when the news was spread about the city that Mrs. RENDALL had been found lying across the bed in her room dead. Just when she died and what caused her death is not known. Mr. RENDALL, who is a traveling salesman for the Hicks company, went to his home about 6:45 yesterday evening and on entering his wife's bedroom found her lying across the bed. Calling to her several times and receiving no answer, he went to the bed, and placing his hands upon her he discovered that she was rigid in death. Hurrying down stairs, Mr. RENDALL called to his friend, John McW. FORD, who lives across the street, and with Mr. FORD returned to his home and to his wife's room, telling him that he had found his wife dead when he entered the room. Dr. McCRACKEN, who lives next door to the RENDALL home, was called, and with his wife hurried to Mrs. RENDALL's room, Mrs. M.A. VANCE, Mrs. FORD and other neighbors and Dr. T.F. LLOYDarriving a few minutes later. An examination by Drs. LLOYD and [McCRACKEN] determined that Mrs. [RENDALL] had been dead several hours, the cause of her death being either heart failure or congestion. According to friends of the family, she was to have attended a class meeting at the home of Mrs. Cooper NELSON at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and it is said that there were evidences that she had prepared to dress to go out, presumably to meet this engagement. Mrs. RENDALL was about 32 years old, a woman of marked beauty and genial disposition and had a large circle of friends. She was born in Hunter, and was married to Mr. RENDALL at Battle Creek, Mich., in 1903. Besides her husband, who is crushed by her sudden and unexpected death, she is survived by her grandmother and two aunts, one of whom resides at Waukegan, Ill., and the other at Milwaukee. It is said that Mrs. RENDALL was contemplating an early visit to her grandmother and aunt at Waukegan and was busy with preparations for the visit. No funeral arrangements will be made until her aunts are heard from, which will probably be some time today, messages having been sent them last night apprising them of the death of her niece. The news of her unexpected death was a great shock to the friends of the family, and Mr. RENDALL has the deepest sympathy of his friends in the loss he has sustained.

Synopsis:
Milton M. MILLER (deceased), farmer and local minister; P.O. New Moorefield; born in Kentucky, December 23, 1811; was a son of Robert and Elizabeth (HANSON) MILLER, he a native of VA and she of Maryland. They became residents of Clark Co in the spring of 1812, locating upon the farm now owned by Abraham Mumper, and here they resided till their death. He died October 18, 1834; his wife died in August, 1857. They were the parents of six children, and he had three by first marriage. Two only now survive - Mary (now Widow BANES), and Maria (now widow of Samuel HUNTER). They were strictly pioneers in this neighborhood, taking their farm right from the woods in its wild state, and enduring all the labors and hardships incident to such life, bringing the forests into fine cultivated fields, with waving grain, and replacing their primitive log cabin with a comfortable frame house, and before their death were able to enjoy the general comforts and conveniences of life, and all accomplished by his own labor and industry. He owned two quarter sections of land, and in connection with his many labors and progress in accumulating property and obtaining the comforts and conveniences of a good farm and home, he was an active Christian worker in the M.E. Church, being a local preacher for many years, and in his death the community lost a kind neighbor and the church a great worker. Our subject being but an infant when his parents moved to this Co, was nurtured, raised and great ot maturity inured to the hardships of the early settlers of that day, and lived with his parents till their death. He was married, November 29, 1832, to Mary T., daughter of Samuel T. and Rebecca (DUNLAP) HEDGES, he a native of Virginia and she of Kentucky; became settlers of Champaign Co., about 1812. They were parents of eleven children; those now living - Mary T., James, Jane, Elizabeth, Tabatha, Sarah and Samuel. Mary T. was born September was born Sept. 22, 1814. Mr. MILLER and wife had ten children, six now living - Mary E. , Rebecca, Clara L., Robert N., Hattie M. and Milton M. Mr. MILLER followed the footsteps of his father in being an industrious, energetic farmer; also an active Christian and a local preacher in the same church, and thus continued to the end of his life, which was terminated very suddenly. On May 5, 1872, having returned from church feeling wearied, he laid down to rest, and when called by his daughter to dinner, was found dead. This, though a severe stroke and loss to his family, was doubtless his eternal gain.
