Synopsis:
Wedding. Blair Enterprise, 27 Dec 1945. Ruth Irene SVENDGAARD Wed In Yuletide Setting. Double-Ring Ceremony Performed In Glow of Lighted Christmas Trees And Burning Candles. Arlington. The glow of gaily lighted Christmas trees and burning candles in tall, seven branch candelabra which flanked either side of the altar, made a lovely Yule-tide setting for the wedding of Miss Ruth Irene SVENDGAARD and Sterling H. PLUGGE. The ceremony took place on Thursday evening at eight o'clock at the Congregational Church with Dr. E. Merle ADAMS reading the impressive double-ring service in the presence of one hundred and fifty relatives and friends. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of white slipper satin cut with fitted bodice, a sweetheart neckline, long, pointed sleeves, and trimmed with seed-pearl bands. The skirt was cut long with a full-length train, and her lace-edged, finger-tip veil was held in place with a tiara of seed pearls. She carried a shower bouquet of pink sweetheart roses and white pompoms. For something old and something borrowed, she carried a lace handkerchief belonging to Mrs. Merle WATCHORN; and for something new and blue, an ice-blue rhinestone bracelet and earrings, the groom's gift. Miss Francs SVENDGAARD was her sister's maid-of-honor; she wore an aqua-blue formal gown with full net over-skirt, three-quarter length sleeves, and sweetheart neckline. Two other bridal attendants were Mrs. Gordon PLUGGE and Mrs. Merle WATCHON of Hooper. They wore dresses cut similar to that of the maid-of-honor, the former wearing a delphinium blue, the latter wearing a shell pink. All three wore blusher veils, held in place with flowers and they carried arm bouquets of pink roses and white daisies. Miss Ann SOSTAK of Chicago, wearing a white and heliotrope formal, light the candles. The groom's brother, Gordon PLUGGE, was best man; and Rupert PETERS and Vernon HACKBARTH served as ushers. Miss Alice NEWCOM played soft organ music preceding the ceremony, and the accompaniments for Mrs. William G. CLAYTON, who sang "I Love Thee" and "Because". Mendelssohn's Wedding March was used for the processional and Lohengrin's for the recessional. The bride is the younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nels SVENDGAARD. She was graduated from the Arlington High School and attended Midland, after which she taught two years. She was employed in Los Angeles for a year and for the past year has been employed in Marshalls' Nurseries offices. The bridge groom is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred PLUGGE. He was also a graduate of the Arlington High School, and recently was discharged from the U.S. Army where he ranked as Staff Sergeant. He is now employed at the Wather Monument Co. in Fremont. A reception was held in the church parlors, which also were decorated with Christmas greens. The lace-covered table was centered with a three-tiered wedding cake, flanked by lighted candles in crystal holders. Mrs. Alvin SVENDGAARD poured and Mrs. Woodrow SVENDGAARD cut the cake. Mrs. Eunice BROWN and Betty SVENDGAARD assisted in serving. Mrs. Howard NELSON was circulating hostess, Miss Anna Marie ANDERSON had charge of the Guest Book and Mrs. Merritt ROSENBAUM the gifts. The newlyweds left at once on a brief honeymoon, the bride wearing for her going away outfit a gold-colored wool suit with brown accessories. They will live in Fremont upon their return.

Blair Farm Girl Undergoes Tonsillectomy While Suffering, Unknown to Her Parents and Physicians from Toxic Poisoning. Effects of eating drouth-poisoned toasting ears Monday proved fatal Tuesday evening to Doris Jean SVENDGAARD, aged 11, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew SVENDGAARD of west of Blair, after she had submitted to a minor operation that morning for removal of her tonsils. Unknown either to her parents or to attending physicians, toxic poisoning had set in. Neither the poisoning resulting from eating the corn nor the tonsillectomy would have proved fatal separately, physicians stated. While Doris Jean was on the operating table at a Fremont Hospital Tuesday, both Mr. and Mrs. SVENDGAARD became ill from the effects of eating the homegrown field corn. At home, meanwhile, two of their youngest children, Betty and Richard, were ill from the same cause. All recovered later in the day. Home Before Death. Doris Jean was brought home following the operation, but at physicians' orders was returned to the Fremont hospital a short time later when her condition grew suddenly worse. Obituary. Blair Enterprise, 16 Nov 1972. Stanley SVENDGARD Is Victim of Plan Crash In Platte River. Accident Took Place Some Time Sunday Before Daybreak. Stanley SVENDGARD, son of Andrew SVENDGARD of Blair and a life-long resident of Washington Co, Was killed early Sunday when an airplane he was piloting crashed into the Platte River just south of Fremont. The plane struck the water a short distance upstream from the Highway 77 bridge and was easily visible from the highway. Mr. SVENDGARD was a truck driver who did custome hauling in several states. He had been living with his brother, Andy SVENDGARD Jr. in Arlington. Because of Stan SVENDGARD's type of work, he was often gone for severals [sic] days at a time on long runs. Mr. SVENDGARD's airplane was discovered in the Platte River some 350 feet west of the highway bridge south of Fremont. The airplane was noticed at about 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning by a motorist driving across the Platte River bridge. The tail of the airplane was sticking out of the water. Fremont Fire and Rescue squadsmen were called to the scene and had to take a boat out to the wreckage. Mr. SVENDGARD's body was found just a few feet away from the fuselage trapped underwater. The plane was near a sand bar in the river and was in only a few inches of water. The Federal Aviation Authority sealed off the area and the body was taken to Omaha for an autopsy. Monday the body was taken to the Campbell Mortuary in Blair. Results of the autopsy were not available as this paper went to press. Officials are not speculating that there may have been another person with SVENDGARD when the plane crashed into the Platte River. Paul CHUDOMELKA, in his late 30's was reported to have been with SVENDGARD in two different Fremont night spots Saturday night and early Sunday morning. The two men had been seen together at the El Coco Restaurant and Marion's Villa. The last time the two were seen was about 1:15 a.m. CHUDOMELKA's car was found in the lot of Marion's Villa after he had ridden to El Coco's with SVENDGARD. It is theorized that the two may have taken an airplane ride from the Fremont Airport some time after 1:15 a.m. on Sunday. The Fremont airport does not have a control tower and no record is kept of aircraft departing or arriving at that time of the morning in Fremont. There were no flight plans filed with the nearest Flight Service office, which is located in Omaha. Andrew SVENDGARD, in Arlington, said that his brother had been on a trucking job for the preceding four days and he was not even aware that his brother was back in the area with his truck. Both Stan and Andrew SVENDGARD were pilots and kept their Piper Commanche at the Fremont airport. Stan was the son of Andrew SVENDGARD Sr. of 2348 Fontanelle Blvd. of Blair. Stan attended Blair High School. Other survivors include his brother Andrew Jr. of Arlington; Richard of Blair; and James of Worchester, Miss. Surviving sisters are: Mrs. Betty STOETZEL of Hastings and Judith SVENDGARD of Pomona, California. Funeral services are being held at the United Methodist Church in Blair, today, Thursday, and burial will be made in the Blair cemetery. The Rev. Charles GATES is conducting the service and burial is under the direction of the Campbell Mortuary. Pallbearers are William LIPPINCOTT, Charles DORNACKER, Willard VanBUREN, Milo WORMSTEAD, Martin CHAPMAN and Burt MERRIWEATHER.

Obituary. Blair Pilot-Tribune, 20 Dec 1934. Rites for Marilyn SVENDGAARD Friday. Four-year-old Daughter of Alvin SVENDGAARDs Died Wednesday. Ill and confined to Court View hospital for only a short time, little Marilyn SVENDGAARD, 4, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin SVENDGAARD of near Blair, succumbed Wednesday afternoon. The body was taken to the Bendorf Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted for the little girl Friday afternoon at the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church at Orum, Rev. Memories from Helen SVENDGAARD SKOV. In February, 1932, Alvin went to Blair in a bobsled to get coal. The roads were drifted with snow so he had to go across the fields through Andrew's place. He brought a little calf home frm grandma's as she had two milking cows in town. He heard the fire whistle when he was on the way home and thought, "I hope someone's house isn't burning." I called Mildred. I found the house was on fire and being on a country line, everyone listens in. All the neighbors were there in minutes. I had the babies in the crib with a big quilt over them, but I just couldn't get the crib through the door. Harold and Toni JENSEN were there so they got it out and put us all in the car. We lived in the one room washhouse that winter and was it cold! No insulation or storm windows. We had two mattress on the bed and moved up to the open oven door at night. All four of us slept in the one bed to keep warm - sometimes before morning, we craled between the mattresses to keep warm. We moved into a new house in the fall of 1932.

Article. Washington County Enterprise, 10 Dec 2014. Salon hosting cutathon for Smile Train in honor of customer. by Tricia Barber. Posted: Monday, November 3, 2014 2:39 pm. Bradley SWARTWOOD met Lori SVENDGARD when she became one of his first customers in his Blair salon. He enjoyed talking to her. "Lori was very outgoing and funny," SWARTWOOD said. "She was always a lot of fun." It wasn't until after the Blair woman died on May 23 that SWARTWOOD learned they had something else in common other than the customer friendship. Both had a passion for Smile Train, an organization that helps people around the world get the cleft lip surgeries they need. SWARTWOOD and his son, Jacob, both experienced the cleft birth defect. SWARTWOOD underwent several surgeries over the years and now his cleft is barely noticeable, he said. He knows the pain of surgeries and the teasing that went along with the birth defect when he was a child. He noticed in SVENDGARD's obituary that her memorials were designated to Smile Train. SWARTWOOD found out eventually that one of SVENDGARD's sons had also experienced a cleft. SWARTWOOD had hosted a cutathon for Smile Train before and he decided to host another one in SVENDGARD's memory. The cutathon is set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Ahead of the Curve Salon & Spa, 1718 Washington St., Blair. Seven stylists, some of whom are joining in from other salons, are donating all the money and tips earned from the haircuts to Smile Train in SVENDGARD's memory. Those who don't need a haircut or can't get there can still donate by accessing www.support.smiletrain.org or can drop off a donation at the salon before or after the event. Alotta Brownies in Fremont, owned by Michelle KAISER of Blair, will donate goodies available for those participating. Having grown up in America, SWARTWOOD said his cleft was more of a cosmetic problem because he received his first surgery right away. Surgeries then were not as advanced as they are now, he said, and he had several of them over the years. He said he has been far more fortunate than many children around the world who are born with cleft. Infants with cleft require surgery so they can eat, drink and speak and sometimes parents in other countries abandon their children with cleft because they don't know how to help them, SWARTWOOD said. Smile Train has provided more than one million surgeries since 1999 in more than 85 countries. Smile Train provides the funds and training to doctors to perform free cleft surgeries in their own communities. The doctors then train other doctors, to keep the process going. For more information about the cutathon, call the salon at 402-426-4055.

Synopsis:
Obituary. Blair Enterprise, 10 Oct 1935. (Peter, Jr.'s father). Peter STRICKLETT Answers Call. Peter STRICKLETT, sr., passed away Thursday evening, October 10, at his home in southwest Blair. He had been in failing health for some time but his last serious illness was not of long duration. Deceased was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John STRICKLETT, who were pioneer settler[s] of this county. He was born February 2nd, 1870, and with the exception of a few months spent in the south, he has spent his entire life in and about Blair. On December 24, 1902, he was married to Esther BOUVIER, also a native of this county and to them six children were born, Mrs. Dorothy ANDERSON , of Omaha; Peter jr., of Blair; Mary, Inabelle, Coral Jean and Roger at home. Deceased was one of a family of thirteen children and he is survived by five brothers, Charles, Dick, Joe and Frank of Blair and John of Omaha and three sisters, Mrs. Laura CLEAVER, of Missouri Valley, Iowa; Mrs. Kate CAMPBELL and Mrs. Mattie JENSEN, of Blair and three grandchildren, Louis and Esther ANDERSON and Ronald Dean STRICKLETT. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Congregational church with Rev. A.F. NEWELL of Lincoln officiating and interment was made in the Blair cemetery. Thus passes another of the older settlers who knew the county in its early days of pioneering when the history of the county was in the making.
Wedding. Blair Enterprise, 17 Sep 1964. Wedding Solemnized At First Methodist Church. A 7:30 o'clock candlelight ceremony took place at the First Methodist Church in Blair when Susan Kaye STRICKLETT became the bride of Bruce Allen DeBOER of Firth, Nebraska. Bouquets of bronze and gold spider mums and white carnations decorated the altar and candelabras entwined with ivy and bronze baby chrysanthemums were used in the decorations. The Rev. Dale WESTADT officiated. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Peter STRICKLETT of Blair and Mr. and Mrs. Roy DeBOER of Firth, Nebraska. Candlelighters were Shirley FOSTER of Murray, Nebraska and Shari DARLING of Lincoln. Miss Sally RUNGE of Bennett, Nebraska was soloist and Mrs. Eugene FLYNN was organist. The bride's gown was of silk linen which featured the floor length, bell shaped skirt styled in Tunic fashion with a graceful detachable train edged with Venice lace. A self fabric bow centered with a rose was at the back of the train. Her fingertip veil was caught by a jeweled crown. She carried a white Bible, belonging to her grandfather. It was topped with a white orchid and white stephanotis streamers. Patricia STRICKLETT, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. Brides maids were Jean PETERSEN of Stromsburg, Nebr. and Linda THORNBURGH of Blair. Their gold satin, floor length gowns, had soft pleating at back and formed slightly belled skirts. A self fabric rolled rose was at the back of the waistline. Their hats were matching circlets with double veils. They carried single bronze and gold spider mums with bronze ribbon streamers. Robert DeBOER of Firth, was best man to the groom. Other attendants were Norman HELFBRINK of St. Paul, Nebraska, Gary DeBOER of Firth and Larry DeBOER of Lincoln. They wore black tuxedos and had bronze and gold boutonnieres. The bride's mother wore a moss green brocade jacket dress and the groom's mother chose a gold brocade dress. The corsages were white orchids. At the reception, Mr. and Mrs. Gary JOHNSON of Omaha, were host and hostess and were assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Andrew SVENDGAARD. Miss Audrey HELTBRINK of Hickman, Nebraska, had the guest book. Miss Mary STRICKLETT and Mrs. Roy FOLLEN cut and served the cake. Mrs. Robert DeBOER of Firth, poured coffee and Kathy KEMPCKE served punch. Misses Julie STRICKLETT of Blair and Janet McVICKER of Hastings were in charge of the gifts. Mr. and Mrs. DeBOER are both graduates of Nebraska Wesleyan University. Mrs. DeBOER also attended the University of Utah. She is affiliated with the Phi Mu Sorority and Mr. DeBOER is a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. He is employed with the State Farm Insurance Company of Greeley, Colorado and his wife will continue in medical technology training at the Wild Country Hospital in Greeley. For her wedding trip to Colorado, the bride chose a three piece cranberry red, knit suit and black accessories. They will reside in Greeley, Colorado.

Obituary. Blair Enterprise, 20 Jun 1974. Mrs. Peter STRICKLETT, Sr., was A Pioneer Of the DeSoto Area. The thinning ranks of old settlers were further reduced with the death of Mrs. Peter STRICKLETT, Sr. Tuesday June 11, 1974. In her ninety years she saw many changes, for her lifetime reached from the "Old Days" to the modern present. Esther B. STRICKLETT was born August 20, 1883 in the hils [sic] west of old DeSoto, Nebraska, in a log cabin belonging to her grandmother. She was the daughter of Oliver and Cora M. BOUVIER. Her paternal grandparents were pioneers in the DeSoto area and her maternal grandparents were homesteaders in Adams County, Nebraska. She attended the Blair Schools, "boarding" in town when in the elementary grades. On Dec. 24, 1902 she was married to Peter STRICKLETT when the family came to the area before Blair existed. The couple farmed in the county until 1916, then moved to an acreage at what was then the "edge of town". This was her home for more than 58 years. Her husband died in October of 1935 and she became the head of the family, a position she successfully filled until the day of her death. From her Grandmother BOUVIER she inherited a "green thumb" and spent many long, happy hours among her flowers. Mrs. STRICKLET was a member of the Blair Congregational Church and of the Order of the Eastern Star. All six children survive their mother. They are Mrs. Francis B. (Dorothy) ANDERSON of Willow Springs, Missouri; Miss Mary V. STRICKLETT, Blair; Peter STRICKLETT, Blair; Mrs. Thomas E. (Inabelle) POWELL, Fairfax, Virginia. Mrs. J. Rod (Coral Jean) McVICKER, Hastings, Nebraska; and Roger B. STRICKLETT, Blair. There are also 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and four cousins. Family services were held at the home at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, follwed by services at 2 p.m. at the Blair Congregational Church with the Rev. John FRITZMEIER officiating at both. Pallbearers were Louis ANDERSEN, Tom POWELL, Gary JOHNSON, Roger P. STRICKLETT, Bruce McVICKER, and John STRAIN. Campbell Mortuary was in charge of arrangements with interment in the Blair Cemetery.

Obituary, Blair Pilot-Tribune & Enterprise, 11 Nov 2004. Pearl E. STRICKLETT, 95. Pearl E. STRICKLETT, 95, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at the Carter House in Blair. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at the First United Methodist Church in Blair. Pearl Eulala (SVENDGAARD) STRICKLETT was born Sept. 8, 1909, on a farm near Orum. She was the youngest of nine children born to Peter and Emma (JENSEN) SVENDGAARD. As a youngster, she rode a horse to March School, and later by horse and buggy, which she drove herself, picking up friends and relatives along the way - an early version of the school bus. She graduated from Blair High School in 1927. On July 31, 1929, she married Peter STRICKLETT Jr. They made their home in Blair with their four children. Mrs. STRICKLETT lived her entire life in Washington Co. She was a granddaughter of Soren JENSEN, one of Washington Co's original settlers. She was very proud of her family heritage and the large JENSEN picnics each summer kept her "in the loop" as to the whereabouts of her many aunts, uncles and cousins. The SVENDGAARD family picnic provided the same opportunity. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her children and their families. If she could have had her way, they would have all lived in Blair. She enjoyed entertaining in her home, her daily crossword puzzle, playing bridge with her friends, and various card games with her family - she never turned down a good card game. She was a 75-year member of the First United Methodist Church and a long-time member of Eastern Star. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald Deane and Virgene STRICKLETT of Salt Lake City, Utah; daughters and sons-in law, Mary Elizabeth and Gary JOHNSON of Surprise, Ariz., Susan Kaye and Bruce DeBOER of Castle Rock, Colo., and Patricia Joy and Wayne STORK of Omaha; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Helen SKOV, Phyllis STRICKLETT and Carol Jean "Sally" McVICKER; a brother-in-law, Tom POWELL; and by generations of nieces and nephews.
